[Wikitech-l] Phabricator: Proposal not to automatically copy subscribers and projects when creating a subtask
Hello dear satisfied Phabricator users, https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T239378 is a proposal to stop automatically copying all Subscribers and Project Tags from a parent task when creating a subtask in Phabricator. Such a change likely would help reduce notification overload[1] for many folks, in the frequent cases when a large/epic task is broken down into dozens of smaller, more detailed subtasks. If you have any concerns about this proposal, please first read all comments in T239378 and then comment yourself. [Wikitech-l] 1.43.0-wmf.6 train blocker in LQT
Hello everyone, Tomorrow's UTC-morning deployment of 1.43.0-wmf.6 might be blocked on a small but potentially noisy issue in LiquidThreads: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T365495 If anyone can offer a spare null-coalescing operator at the right spot (and ideally get it merged&backported), as Core's parseAsContent() does not enjoy passing a null parameter anymore, that would be lovely - but better trust Krinkle's initial analysis in the task instead (thanks!). It is sometimes hard for me to find relevant information. Thus a while ago I asked for deboosting search results on mediawiki.org that include "Template:Historical": https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T274082 Still I'd love to have a way to exclude such pages by default. As time passes by the percentage of obsolete pages will increase. Thus relevant information become harder to find. I consider this a problem. FYI, wikitech.wikimedia.org does have an "Obsolete" namespace (id 110; talk id: 111). Though I do not know how it came to existence and how regularly it is used (as moving pages requires special permissions). IMHO a related issue is that authors and editors need to be more aware of time. I've come across many pages stating "currently" or "next July". Without going to the page history, readers cannot realize that these strings were added years ago and that the page *is* outdated. It may also make sense to show more visibly when a wiki page was last edited and/or that there is a bigger chance that it might be outdated. They should not be about rewriting but rather "maintenance": * librsvg for SVG rendering is a five year old version: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T193352 / https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T265549 * Graph extension on old Vega version 2.6.3: see subtasks of https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T292341 * Scribunto extension on old Lua version 5.1 (last 5.1.x release was in 2012): https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T178146 * 3D extension on a five year old three.js library in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T277930#7636129 * Removing the OpenStackManager extension from wikitech.wm.org: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T161553 * Removing WVUI from MediaWiki core: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T310244 * Replacing jsduck with JSDoc3 across all Wikimedia code bases: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T138401 * Undeploy VipsScaler from Wikimedia wikis: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T290759 * https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T151393 (a non-public task) This is not a complete list. Plus there are also separate "waiting for someone to make a decision" and "improving communicating & documenting already-made decisions" categories which would be different lists. I personally think the best solution is to have > separate work boards for team management vs mediawiki component. I strongly agree and advertise having both a project/workboard for the team (violet project tag) AND a codebase project tag (blue project tag) for the software. Scope and thus responsibilities of teams change over time. A ticket may be still valid for a codebase though some team might not steward or maintain this codebase anymore. > Generally i find the priority field an endless source of drama. The way non-devs > think it is prescriptive instead of descriptive is very problematic. > Sometimes i wonder if it should be removed entirely, although maybe > that is too far. Many years ago, restricting who can set/change the Priority field value was discussed in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T819 . Over the years we have become more restrictive in who can change certain aspects of tasks or projects in Phab due to vandalism, e.g. by having Access-control lists (ACL) like the #Trusted-Contributors group in Phabricator (and a similar concept in Gerrit). Adding such restrictions often requires code changes in Phabricator while it seems that WMF does not invest much effort into actively fixing some of the shortcomings of its infrastructure software. Thus some folks might instead prefer to use whatever tools folks are already used to do or tools which presumably serve better folks' needs, with the side effect of decreasing collaboration and transparency. [Wikitech-l] [Proposal] Disable setting the "Lowest" Priority value in Phabricator
Wikimedia Phabricator tasks have a "Priority" dropdown field (which is not consistently used) with several discrete values, among them "Lowest". See [1] for the full list of Priority field values. Since [2], "Low" and "Lowest" priority share the same definition. I propose to disable setting the "Lowest" Priority value in Phab tasks. "Lowest priority" can sound demotivating / disrespectful ("there is nothing that could be even less important"). However, bikeshedding about changing the name of the value would ignore further observations: * About half of the people who are most active in setting initial Priority values do not ever set Priority to "Lowest"[3]. * There is no significant difference between median age of open tasks with Low and with Lowest priority[4], thus nothing seems to get realistically differentiated here. * Personally I also assume Lowest priority is sometimes used instead of honestly declining a task (means: "this is not a good idea"[5]). But of course that is rather hard to prove. If you have opinions and/or ideas how to interpret data differently, please add them to https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T228759 to keep them in a single place - either as a text comment, or via "Award Token" to express support or disagreement without adding words. A proposal for introducing such a template on a wiki would need to be discussed on that wiki instead (I assume in this case it would be the German language Wikipedia). There might be exceptions like https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T188852 but generally speaking, as neither https://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/InitialiseSettings.php.txt nor https://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/CommonSettings.php.txt seem to change the MediaWiki software default setting defined in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/source/mediawiki/browse/master/includes/DefaultSettings.php$2673 I'd assume that we're at 2MiB. [Wikitech-l] Developer Portal status update
Hej hej, as you may remember from previous[1] posts[2], we (Alex[3], Bryan[4], Sarah[5], Tricia[6], and me[7]) are working on a developer portal for technical documentation[8] and updating key technical documents. The goal is to make it easier for everyone to find the help and information you need about the technical side of MediaWiki software and Wikimedia projects and to improve the overall quality and discoverability of technical documentation. I'm going to share what has happened over the last months (also see the general schedule[9]). Regarding the technical stack, we decided on a platform[10]. Its work- in-progress codebase is in Gerrit[11] and there might be a demo server soon[12]. This is the technical scaffold; actual content will be added when we get closer to launching in a few months (see the corresponding task graph[13] for work to sort out before launching). We defined core audiences[14] and had nine user tests completed[15] so far. The feedback helped iterate on the Developer Portal content layout draft prototype[16] (which evolved from a unified to a multipage approach). We are also in the process of reviewing and improving many key technical documentation pages (which will get linked from the developer portal). These updates and accuracy checks are based on a review checklist[17]. The checklist may also be helpful for anyone else interested in good technical documentation. For planning documentation review work, we use a Phabricator workboard[18]; you can also find the list of key pages on the project wiki page[19]. To get involved, sign up[20] to participate in user testing for the developer portal. For questions and feedback, leave us a comment on the project talk page[21]. All these efforts are part of the goal to have discoverable docs and paths to entry[22]. [Wikitech-l] Coolest Tool Award 2021: Call for nominations
Dear all, It’s time for our third edition of the Coolest Tool Award! Tools play an essential role at Wikimedia, and so do the many volunteer developers who experiment with new ideas, develop & maintain local & global solutions and enhance the experience for Wikimedia communities. We’d like to invite you all to nominate your favorite & most used tools and help us celebrate the people who create them! As no one can possibly know all the cool tools out there, we’re looking for some help and inspiration: please point us to the tools that you think are great - for any reason you can think of! Please go to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Coolest_Tool_Award to recommend tools by October 27, 2021. You can nominate as many tools as you want by filling out the form multiple times. Thank you very much for your ideas & recommendation(s)! The award is organized & selected by the Coolest Tool Academy 2021. We plan to recognize the greatest tools in a variety of categories (for examples, see last year’s categories). The award ceremony will take place virtually again this year and we will provide more details soon about the specific logistics and dates. We will continue to spread the word over the next week, but if you get the chance, please feel welcome to share this information with others too! [Wikitech-l] Developer Portal content draft: A future central place which links key technical documents
: Your feedback is wanted on https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Developer_Advocacy/Developer_Portal/Content_Draft Hi everyone, last year[1] the Developer Advocacy team started to work on a single, central entry point for developers and tech-minded people for Wikimedia's technical documentation[2]. A central entry point ("developer portal") would cover common technical use cases to allow existing and future technical contributors and developers to find the information they need. Each use case links to its most relevant documentation (i.e. to pages on wikitech or mediawiki.org). This is part of a larger initiative to implement an organization strategy for key technical documents: Understand challenges about finding and maintaining docs, identify key docs, and investigate ways to improve our workflows around documentation. So far we: * Researched and reviewed existing documentation venues and pages * Reviewed developer/documentation portals in the broader industry * Interviewed several engineering teams around technical documentation workflows, audiences, and key technical docs (the key themes from these conversations are available, see the link above) * Created an initial draft for the structure and content of the single entry point Now we would like to improve this initial content draft with your help. 1) Please take a look at the initial draft at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Developer_Advocacy/Developer_Portal/Content_Draft 2) Then, please help improve it by sharing your thoughts and feedback until *May 25th* at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Developer_Advocacy/Developer_Portal/Content_Draft/Feedback Note that this is only a draft how to structure content. It is not a design or layout proposal and it is not an implementation. For additional future work, see also the Phabricator workboard[3]. Next steps include: * A session at the remote Hackathon (May 22-23; [4]) * Incorporate content improvements, based on your feedback * Check the documents linked from the single entry point proposal for accuracy * Investigate requirements for the technical implementation * Investigate improvements of processes around technical documentation (structure, locations, navigation, stewardship, etc). If you want to learn more about the project, please see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Developer_Advocacy/Developer_Portal Thanks to everybody who has provided their valuable input to get to this stage, and thanks in advance to everyone who will! I've been wondering for a while [1] about a way to get a list of quite active reviewers in Wikimedia Gerrit who have not +2'ed any proposed changes in Gerrit, implying that these developers don't have +2 permissions [2] and could be candidates to receive +2 permissions. Last weekend I created a dashboard at https://wikimedia.biterg.io/app/kibana#/dashboard/ffd01840-cdf9-11ea-8358-4d35848e335d It's not very performant but it works. On the left you can filter on a specific reviewer (hover over the name and select the "+" magnifier icon). After enough patience you can see on the right the code repositories in which they have been reviewing proposed patches in the timeframe defined in the upper right corner. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Community_metrics#List_of_the_most_active_reviewers_without_CR+2_actions is the corresponding documentation. Other support venues which exist in parallel are much more active, such as IRC, mailing lists, [[mw:Project:Support_desk]], [[meta:Tech]], local technical village pumps, newsletters, Zulip for outreach programs, or other third-party sites such as mwusers.org, StackExchange.com, or Reddit. Discontinuing the least frequented venue (which unfortunately is Discourse though it seems to be a great communication platform) would keep us from further fragmenting our conversations and efforts. Planning, implementing, establishing and running a centralized Wikimedia developer support venue on production infrastructure (puppetization, data backups, uptime, etc) would require significant technical and "social" capacity. If Discourse was to be further evaluated, https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T155678 and its subtasks list part of the remaining needed work. I propose to make discourse-mediawiki.wmflabs.org read-only by the end of August 2020. Please comment on https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T247010 if you have thoughts to share instead of replying to this message. Because keeping conversations in one place. ;) Thanks a lot! andre -- Andre Klapper (he/him) | Bugwrangler / Developer Advocate https://blogs.gnome.org/aklapper/ ___ Wikitech-l mailing list Wikitech-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikitech-l

Ah, that page does not even provide a link to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:TimedMediaHandler/VideoJS_Player Keeping documentation up-to-date: Not always the main focus it seems. Probably also depends on whether you are logged in and if you have enabled "New video player" under "Preferences > Beta features". Probably also depends on whether your web browser (version) supports HTML5: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T100106 Probably also depends on which exact website you are on: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T248418 > I've tried to push for more video to be used in Infoboxes just to see > examples of why that is a terrible idea [1]. > [1] https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fi%C8%99ier:IMG_20200523_183135.jpg I don't know what "is a terrible idea" in the image.
