[Wikitech-l] [Wikitech-I] Call for Projects and Mentors for Google Summer of Code 2024 and Outreachy Round 28 is OPEN!

2024-01-10 Thread Onyinyechi Onifade
Hello everyone,

Wikimedia is gearing up to apply as a mentoring organization for Google
Summer of Code 2024 <
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/2024>[1] and Outreachy
Round 28 <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreachy/Round_28> [2].
Currently, we're crafting a list of exciting project ideas for the
application. If you have any suggestions for projects, whether coding or
non-coding (design, documentation, translation, outreach, research), please
share them by February 5th via this Phabricator task: <
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T354734> [3]. Note that for non-coding
projects eligible for Outreachy, slots are limited and will be allocated to
mentors on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Timeline

In your role as a mentor, your involvement spans the application period for
both programs, taking place from March to April. During this time, you'll
guide candidates in making small contributions to your project and address
any project-related queries they may have. As the application period
concludes, you'll further intensify your collaboration with accepted
candidates throughout the coding period, which extends from May to August.
Your support and guidance are crucial to their success in the program.

Guidelines for Crafting Project Proposals:

   -

Follow this task description template when you propose a project in
   Phabricator: <
   https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/outreach-programs-projects> [4].
You can also use this workboard to pick an idea if you don't have one
   already. Add #Google- Summer-of-Code (2024) or #Outreachy (Round 28) tag.
   -

Project should require an experienced developer ~15 days and a newcomer
   ~3 months to complete.
   -

Each project should have at least two mentors, including one with a
   technical background.
   -

Ideally, the project has no tight deadlines, a moderate learning curve,
and fewer dependencies on Wikimedia's core infrastructure. Projects
addressing the needs of a language community are most welcome.

* Learn more about the roles and responsibilities of Mentors for both
programs:*

2023-11-27 Thread Onyinyechi Onifade
Hello all,

You might have already heard the buzz: the Wikimedia Hackathon is gearing
up for an incredible event in Tallinn, Estonia
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tallinn>, from May 3rd - 5th, 2024. Now,
we're thrilled to announce that the Registration form is now open

includes an optional Scholarship application
<https://pretix.eu/wikimedia/wmhackathon2024/>
<https://pretix.eu/wikimedia/wmhackathon2024/>which will run until January

Participation in the onsite Wikimedia Hackathon in Tallinn is contingent
upon registration. The registration portal will remain accessible until we
hit our venue's capacity, which is approximately set at 220 participants.
Here's the exciting part: the event itself is entirely free of charge
ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to join us. Please note that
participants are required to make individual travel arrangements unless
they have been awarded a scholarship.

[Wikitech-l] Mark Your Calendars: Wikimedia Hackathon 2024 in Tallinn, Estonia, from May 3rd - 5th 2024! 

2023-11-22 Thread Onyinyechi Onifade
Hi Everyone,

On behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation's Hackathon Organizing team, I am
thrilled to share the exciting news that the 2024 Wikimedia Hackathon is
scheduled to unfold in the captivating city of Tallinn, Estonia
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tallinn>, from May 3rd - 5th 2024!

The Wikimedia Hackathon is an annual event, uniting the global technical
community in a dynamic gathering focused on connection, innovation, and
building really cool projects. At this event, technical contributors
hailing from all corners of the globe converge with a shared mission: to
enhance the technological infrastructure and software that underpins and
empowers Wikimedia projects. For this exceptional 2024 edition, the
Wikimedia Foundation is joining forces with WMEE, the official local
chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation in Estonia
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Eesti>, to bring you an
unforgettable experience.

The theme for this edition aligns with last year's, emphasizing the
gathering of individuals who have a track record of contributing to the
technical aspects of Wikimedia projects. We're looking for those who are
versed in navigating the technical ecosystem and are adept at working
autonomously or collaborating effectively on projects.

While the majority of our event will unfold onsite, we're excited to share
that certain parts of the program will be broadcasted online, ensuring
accessibility to a wider audience. We warmly encourage local communities to
host pre-hackathon events or meetups. In the coming months, these pages
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2024> will be your
go-to resource for comprehensive details on attendance procedures, venue
specifics, travel recommendations, accommodation options, and scholarship
opportunities. Stay tuned!

The next milestone on our journey is just around the corner. Registration
and scholarship applications are set to open Monday November 27th (see
timeline <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2024#Timeline>).
Be sure to keep an eye on the talk page, mediawiki page
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2024>and your inbox
for consistent updates.

Should you have any inquiries or wish to get in touch with the coordination
team, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at hackat...@wikimedia.org,
or share your thoughts on the talk page
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2024/Discussions> of
the hackathon.

We are really looking forward to welcoming you again at the Hackathon, and
we hope that you are also excited to join and hack together!

On Behalf of the Hackathon Organizing Team,

Onyinyechi Onifade

Hello everyone,

TLDR; Wikimedia is participating in the Outreachy Round 27 internship
program <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreachy/Round_27 > [1].
Outreachy's goal is to support people from groups underrepresented in the
technology industry. Interns will work remotely with mentors from our
community. We are seeking mentors to propose projects that Outreachy
interns can work on during their internship. If you have some ideas for coding
or non-coding (design, documentation, translation, outreach, research)
projects, share them by Sept. 29, 2023 at 4 pm UTC here as a subtask of
this parent task: <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T343871 > [2]

Program Timeline

As a mentor, you engage potential candidates in the application period
between October–November (winter round) and help them make small
contributions to your project. You work more closely with the accepted
candidates during the internship period between December–March (winter
round).

Important dates are:

   -

   Aug. 22, 2023 at 4pm UTC - Live Q for Outreachy mentors
   <https://www.youtube.com/@outreachyinternships>
   -

September 29, 2023 at 4pm UTC - Project submission deadline
   <https://www.outreachy.org/communities/cfp/wikimedia/>

Guidelines for Crafting Project Proposals

* Follow this task description template when you propose a project in
Phabricator: <
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/outreach-programs-projects> [3]. You
can also use this workboard to pick an idea if you don't have one already.
Add #Outreachy (Round 27) tag.

* Project should require an experienced developer ~15 days and a newcomer
~3 months to complete.

* Each project should have at least two mentors, including one with a
technical background.

* Ideally, the project has no tight deadlines, a moderate learning curve,
and fewer dependencies on Wikimedia's core infrastructure. Projects
addressing the needs of a language community are most welcome.
