[Wikitech-l] Supporting the work of volunteer developers: what (not) to do?

2022-09-13 Thread sandra . fauconnier
Hi all,

In a group discussion at Wikimania (August 13) [1], more than 30 people talked
about how to make content partnership software in the Wikimedia movement more
reliable and sustainable. The session focused on the role of volunteer
developers in the movement, and if (and how) a formal organization (like a
thematic hub) can step up and help volunteer developers to make their software
more sustainable.

Although this discussion at Wikimania was very lively, many voices were still
not heard there. For those who could not attend: we summarized the outcomes in
a blog post [2], and you can watch the recording of the session on YouTube [3].
If you read that summary and the contributions to the Etherpad [4]: do you
agree, or disagree? We would really like to hear your feedback, which you can
leave on the talk page of the on-wiki version of this blog post [5], or e-mail
to me directly.

Many thanks and all the best!
Sandra Fauconnier (in the capacity of product strategist at Wikimedia Sverige)

[Wikitech-l] Wikimania session on volunteer Wikimedia developers and content partnership software

2022-08-10 Thread sandra . fauconnier
Hello all,

On behalf of Wikimedia Sweden, I am hosting a group discussion at Wikimania for
volunteer developers. The session is about the topic: how can we make content
partnership software (e.g. GLAM tools, tools for batch uploads, statistics...)
more sustainable and stable? Can a formal Wikimedia organization (e.g. an
affiliate or another kind of organization) help here? What are do's and don'ts?
If you build such tools, and/or have opinions about this subject, please
consider joining us!

The session is next Saturday, August 13, at 10.10 AM UTC, check here for your
local time: https://zonestamp.toolforge.org/1660385400

[Wikitech-l] Fwd: [GLAM] Announcing an initiative by WMSE and WMF for GLAM communities of practice

Subject: [GLAM] Announcing an initiative by WMSE and WMF for GLAM
communities of practice
To:

Hi all,

Starting from July 2019, Wikimedia Sverige and the Wikimedia Foundation's
GLAM team work together on an initiative to create a better and more
sustainable technical infrastructure for global heritage and content
partnerships.

This initiative is in its very early stages. We have just given a first
presentation about it at Wikimania [1], of which you can watch the video
recording [2], read the discussion notes [3], and/or browse the slides with
speaker notes [4].

We have now also published information and a landing page about this
initiative on meta.wikimedia.org [5], where we warmly welcome your first
remarks, questions and feedback on the talk page [6]. We look forward to
engage many of you in the research and scoping that will take place in the
upcoming year!

Warmly,

John Andersson (Wikimedia Sverige)

Sandra Fauconnier (Wikimedia Foundation)

Re: [Wikitech-l] Looking for a mentor with experience in building tools for Wikimedia

2019-03-05 Thread Sandra Fauconnier
Hi everyone! Just to follow up: it seems that we indeed have found someone
to help out here.

Info about the tool is not online yet, but will be soon, I hope.
It'll be a tool on Toolforge, providing an easy interface for
beginners/laypeople to easily add microcontributions of structured metadata
to files on Wikimedia Commons.
We'll work on it as a pilot for Structured Data on Commons, with images
from pas Wiki Loves Africa campaigns as a first set. Support is (for now)
only needed for a few months, most of it in April.

As I said: we have probably already found someone who will help out - but
if this tool sounds interesting to any of you, feel free to reach out!

Cheers, Sandra
