Hi friends,

Sad news this morning. Lou Cassella, Claire Szabo-Cassella's husband and one of
her main caregivers, died last night. David Ziegler is with Claire. He told me
he would give more detail on this list later, but I could let people know.

Lou came to the 45th Reunion with Claire so she could participate. He was a
loving, gentle presence with us that week.

If you do not already follow Claire's Red Scooter
Diaries, please have a look. You can read Lou's
contributions under Confessions of a
Caregiver.
The website also offers ways to support Claire.

Claire, we are all sending you so much love. David, thank you for being there
for both Claire and Lou.

Much love to all,
Madge

the exchange we had when Doc and James Loehlin received the "Burbage Award" in

Unfortunately, members of our Session Two class have contracted COVID and in an
effort to reduce community spread and ensure the continued safety of our

Camp Shakespeare program early and not move forward with the public
performances of Macbeth this weekend. (July 15/16/17)

We are heartbroken. We are also very grateful for the week we had together as a
class. The students formed strong friendships and deeply enjoyed the
exploration of their play. We did too.

This does not affect the college program— all three of their plays are moving
forward and they look forward to hosting you at the Barn this summer to enjoy
them.

We hope you and yours are well.
With Gratitude,

Dear fellow ancianos,
Do you need some Winedale in your life? A small group of ancianos (the earliest
explorers of Shakespeare at Winedale) has been imagining possibilities with Doc
and one another, and we think it’s high time to get together again.

A full-scale reunion with complete productions of plays feels unrealistic for
many reasons, but a long weekend of scenes, poems, music, improv, circles, and
messing around really appeals to us.

What are you doing from Thursday, 3 November through Sunday, 6 November? We
have zeroed in on these dates as the likeliest to offer accommodations for all
who need them. (Doc will be our cruise director).

First we need to know your availability and interest. Do you want to play with
other ancianos over the span of a crisp fall weekend? You could choose a little
or a lot. Maybe you will just drive in for the day or maybe you’re hungrier for
the whole enchilada.

Please reply by no later than July 4, indicating whether you’ll expect to be a
day-tripper or a full-weekender needing a place to stay. Once we’ve got a sense
of the numbers of participants, we can begin gathering your views about how we
could spend our time in the Barn. Avoiding the "reply all" option, please send
your replies directly to me at
gail.mcdonald...@gmail.com and I'll keep the
other planners up to date.

Can't wait to hear from you!

Let us know ahead of time if you can make it so we can make a plan for food,

Spread the word to anyone not on the list.

Hi all,

I want to invite everyone to a meeting in Austin on Saturday, August 17 from
11am-1pm at Scottish Rite Theatre. Doc, Robin, James, Liz, Clayton, & Katy have
all said they can attend that day and time. The meeting is open to any and all
that want to be involved in the 50th reunion...including Ancianos, Campers,
James' former students, Clayton's former students, and even long-time patrons
or fans of Camp, Winedale, and past reunions.

The idea is that we spend the 1st hour brainstorming about all the things we
want the reunion to include and then the 2nd hour looking at calendars and
thinking about practical considerations.

We'll figure out a way for people who can't make it in person to give their
input and we'll be sure to include all the ideas that have already been
suggested on this list.

I'll have some refreshments there and maybe people who want to can go to
Shultz's or the Chili Parlor afterward for lunch or a beer.

Please help spread the word. Also, let me know if you're planning to come so we
can get an idea of how many chairs/drinks we need.

Thanks to Susan Todd for hosting at Scottish Rite.

At the duke's oak we meet,

Thanks,
Madge

Dear Doc and Everybody,

I have the germ of an idea for the 50th reunion, not so much for performance or
for things that will happen on the day(s) of the celebration but something
about creating a record of the half-century of Winedale's (and Doc's and
Shakespeare's) influence on our lives. I'm thinking of things like music Carl
has written, an excerpt from books like Claire's, essays like Alice's, the best
photographs from the archives, short memory pieces from anyone who wants to
contribute, descriptions of theater programs and performances that germinated
first at Winedale (Esther's Follies, Rude Mechs, etc., Robert Faires's one-man
shows, Mickey Faust), and so on. In short, some sort of book, maybe real or
maybe virtual. Is anything like that in the works? I can offer writing and
editing skills. It's not the same as playing, I know, but it would be lovely
to have a sort of souvenir program.

Would love to hear reactions.

Clayton, Everyone

I love the idea of your kids also being involved in the reunion, Clayton.

And your suggestion that we ought to celebrate the far reaching influence of
Shakespeare at Winedale.

Do any of you guys remember a Family Tree of Winedale that Robert F did for
the Chronicle years ago?

It showed how Winedale was the root for all these other branches of art and
performance and theater.

The Rudes were one off shoot as was Esther's Follies and Susan GayleTodd's
Weird Sisters as is the MIckee Faust Club.

I don't remember them all but there were MANY others.

And if we can take the ideas of Kathy, Madge, Robert, Bruce, Lynn, Clayton,
Alice, John, LaVonne and the rest of us and combine them into a Festival of
sorts that celebrates as Bruce suggested with a play for those who can be here
for that week and then a Festival of sorts as Kathy first suggested .

But ,to expand Kathy's idea, have it be a day Festival with short performances
representing all of the many groups inspired by Winedale -- letting them do
short excerpts for instance from one of the Weird Sister's All-Female
Shakespeare's, the Rude's Fixing Shakespeare series, a song or skit from the
Mickee Faust Club, a scene by Clayton's kids, something from John's Urinetown,
a scene done by Camp Shakespeare and a scene done by kids from the Winedale UT
classes with maybe a mix of kids taught by Doc and James directed by Stan,
Steve, Robert Matney and and and and.

And those are just the groups that come immediately to mind. There's just so
much we could pull from.

The groups that are in Austin will of course be better able to do something
like that.

I remember two scenes from Shakespeare that we did during the earlier years of
Esther's Follies -- they were the Induction from Taming with Ernie Sharpe
playing Christopher Sly; and the lover's madcap scene from Midsummer. And in
those scene were those of us in Esther's from Winedale. And the audiences
just ate them up.

Because Clayton is right -- we should be letting the world know how influential
Doc and Winedale have been -- how far reaching. How much celebration of
Shakespeare and community and theater is going on out in the world because of
Doc and Shakespeare at Winedale.

Just a thought. Or two.

Love, Terry

Jerald - glad I could be your buffer and I enjoyed Susan's production of COE
too - very creative and entertaining! The theatre and sets were gorgeous... But
do check your chair backs before sitting down. I had an entanglement with my
first choice which had a broken back and almost broke mine as we collapsed to
the floor! Our two wonderful doctors - Craig and Jerald came to my rescue,
prescribed Advil and ice, and we then all enjoyed the show. Of course Jerald
had to inform me how sore I would be in the morning! Anyway - come see the show
and let's all go to dinner!
And Terry, thanks for your lovely words! They mean a lot! It also meant the
world to me that you came to our performances- you were missed during the week!
And to the rest of you- keep writing, it is joyful to hear your voices! Love,
Lynn
