[WISPA] Back to the hurricaine......A time to focus

2005-08-31 Thread Bob Moldashel

Hey MacDon't worry. President Bush will be there on Friday and make
everything better. He would have been there sooner but he had a fund
raiser scheduled for tonight and another one tomorrow. :-)

Relax everyone. That was a joke. I'm a stupid Republican too. Don't
jump up and down. Let's keep this near topic.

And more good news. The govt just released a part of the strategic
oil reserve to help with the fuel situation down there. They say the
main reason for this was due to the inability to move oil into the
refineries. What they failed to mention was that the refineries in the
region are still shut down and are not expected to be up to production
levels until next week. I bet by then the oil will be flowing again. If
nothin more it will mean more gas for me. Sure won't help the poor
people of Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana much.

Amazing.

On a serious note..

Having been through 9-11 here in NY I can imagine the devastation that
is down there. What I can't comprehend is why the President is not there
NOW and has not mobilized all available armed forces to the region. We
(America) reportedly sent close to One Billion Dollars to Israel to
Compensate those that were displaced by the Gazza Strip situation
In The Name Of Peace. Those that left house behind will be paid money
for their houses that they vacated. Any idea what we could do with a
billion dollars now???

Buildings are damaged and under water. Every one of those houses in the
area needs to be systematically searched and marked on the outside once
searched. There are tens of thousands of buildings to search. Houses
that are under water each need to have their roof cut open to verify no
one is in the attic of these locations. That takes time and resources.
It's in the 90's there. And it's sunny. Surely you guys (and gals) have
been in an attic in the summer. 15 minutes and you are ready to die.
There ARE people still in those attics and have been there for days. And
they are dying. If they are still alive they are hungry, tired, scared
and in need of medical care. Many who stayed behind are elderly or
impoverished which makes them vulnerable to begin with.

Those that went to shelters (there was a reported 25,000 people in the
Superdome alone) were not alloowed to bring their pets with them. that
means dogs, cats, etc were left behind before the storm and had to fend
for themselves. Many of them are dead and floating. The others are
hungry and/or injured.

There is no electric. No A/C. No running clean water. No telephone.
Cellular service is extremely spotty. Most communications is down
because the flooding does not allow the transportation of fuel to the
tower generators. The ones that are above the water line anyways.

Things will deteriorate rapidly now. The levees are breached and water
is filling downtown New Orleans. The looting has begun. The food supply
is winding down. Tensions will get higher and soon weapons will be
involved. The order to evacuate all of New Orleans was given. You know
what that means?? They are not sending supplies to the city. They are
removing the people and taking them (hopefully) to the supplies.

I think the last thing they need right now is Internet service. They
need money, tents, food, clothing, medical supplies, motuary services,
water, fuel, boats, etc. They need some place to live. They need people
to volunteer to search, cook, clean up, transport supplies, etc.

After the Florida hurricaines last year I received several requests for
my services in the area from customers and manufacturers. They came in
the first 48 hours after the storm. Ya know how many I got this time???
None. I have talked with other guys in the region and with the
exception of some small companies that lost towers and such, they also
have received no requests. That means there is nothing to fix. Or
nothing left to fix.

Most of all the people in this region need our prays.

So if you can't go and help..If you ate a nice breakfast this
moring, drove your car to work in the air condioning, took a nice shower
or just slept in a bed last night that was dry and comfortable...Be
thankful and pray for those that didn't.

And hug your family and tell them you love themBecause many no
longer can.

Life is too short. Live it like it is your last day.

God Bless

moving all the folks out of the shelters to higher ground (refugee
camps) North of New Orleans City limits. It will be many months before
anyone will be allowed back into New Orleans. Water is still pouring
into town as we speak due to levee breaches and is expected to have 9'
of water downtown before it quits coming across the levee. A soup bowl
cant hold but so much soup.

I am and have been thinking about those ON higher ground already. Baton
Rouge, for instance, has power and everything...but outlying areas southward
do not.

Let's think about this... Idaho has a population of 1.36 million people.
Imagine Idaho, twice, instantly homeless, jobless, without resources. Even if
you can return to where your home was...what will you do?

But these hundreds of thousands who have nowhere, nobody, nothing... Many of
them need to find family, places to go, etc. And this is where we could
help. And then, those communities that are getting back together, but need
phone, and some help finding stuff.

It takes at least 5 support people for every hundred, just so they can eat,
drink, etc. And not to minimize what's being done by the Red Cross and
countless organizations, government and private, but we're unique, in that we
can do what nobody else c an do easily.

The HAM radio guys are mobilized in considerable numbers, to try to help
people find thier families and whatnot, by patching in phone service from
places its working.

We ARE behind the curve on this... but I will suggest now, that WISPA form a
disaster strike team. In future years, I'll donate and volunteer for it...
that goes and provides information services to ANYWHERE under any conditions,
and that we cultivate a relationship with FEMA and the state governments.

Every WISP I know is a can do type of person. We're bucking the trends,
carving out uniquely to do what others can't. We have something incredibly
valuable to offer, and we should.

I have ot tell you that the launch of my business was delayed 2 years, partly
because of issues relating to my education and so on, but also because me and
my wife donated so much of our time and money to helping others. Some years
we have given in money and time (lost income) more than it took to get my
business off the ground. What I can offer to help others is changing...and I
feel an obligation - a God-given one... to do what I can. I'm not a
firefigher, soldier, pilot, EMT, cop... etc... But what I can do... I would
like to do.

Im sure many of you out there feel the same. But we should only do...if, and
when ,and what, is needed. Let those who know say what's needed, but we
can't be asked, if what we can do isn't even known about.

Re[2]: [WISPA] Back to the hurricaine......A time to focus

2005-08-31 Thread Barry at Mutual Data
Hello Mark,

Excellent post Mark, I think a database should be put together that
can list what is available and what people can bring into a situation
like this.

For example-

2 installers plus bucket truck (30 foot height)

Tower climber w/ safety equipment- up to 200 foot structure

2.4ghz 24db grid antennas
Breezecom radios AP10/WB10 pair

Gas Generator model xyz

etc etc.

I got thinking about what we could do here in Mid-Michigan, and as
long as the right structures are standing I could go 100 plus miles
with some decent bandwidth.

I think the idea to setup VOIP outside the damaged areas to help
people get communications to the outside world would be extremely
important. Something that FEMA and other agencies will not be putting
high on the list at this stage since rescue is still in place.

Yikes guys!

Let me know if there's something I can do. I'm not ready to ship gear that
you may or may not need, nor am I ready to send money that'll go places I
may not want it to go. Send me something specific and I'll see what I can
come up with.

Good luck and God speed.

Sorry for not elaborating - The Feds called for anyone with an aluminum
flat and motor to assist in rescue efforts (the aluminum flats will be
used to remove the floating corpse of any dead human or animal they come
across) the Fed / Coast Guard / National Guard resources will be used
for the actual rescue efforts - They are trying to prevent the
outbreak of disease / plague / etc.

What happens when Grass / Weeds / Plants are under water is - after day
1 - they start to rot (we go float fishing here a lot after heavy rains)
When this happens - all of the oxygen is eliminated from the water -
Fish / frogs / anything amphibious starts to die..

What will happen is if we come across survivors - we will radio in their
coords to a cental location - drop off water / food and then move on to
our hunt for the dead. This is really fuckin depressing - pardon my
french, but needs to be done. They are expecting it to take atleast 2
months AFTER the water starts to recede to pump off the water around New
Orleans and surrounding areas. There will be NO FIX for the levees being
breached or broken unfortunately - but they will make a last ditch
effort. Regardless of what the MEDIA is saying - and being told - New
Orleans is experiencing the Fish Bowl effect that everyone hoped
wouldn't happen - The Dodged the bullet was a false statement and
anyone who has absolutely any clue realizes just how tragic this will
end up being In the long run. To put it simply - a MAJOR city in the US
has just been wiped off of the map completely...

Matt - unfortunately - within 3-4 days there will be nothing but
Military/Coast Guard/Red Cross /Disease prevention crews and Federal
agencies.

I am leaving tomorrow afternoon - I have 20+ Friends that have been
asked to go remove bodies. I will be out of touch for 3-5 days and
will report to the list once we get back..

Is there any way some of us other WISPs can show up with some
infrastructure and save the day? Could be a good opportunity to help
some people and do some good marketing WISPs at the same time.

2005-08-31 Thread Joe Laura

Sorry I did not post a reply until now. I just got the opportunity to sit in
front of a PC. I want to thank you'll for all the E-Mails I got of support. I
really needed that. Its extremly hard to sit down an even just type something
about this Hurricane. It has been a nightmare to say the least for all of us on
the Gulf Coast. All of my family is alive and I am so thankfull for that. The
mental effects that this has on one is unimaginable. At first I thought it was
just me but everyone I talk to just begins to break down when they realize the
reality of what is going on. I am determined to get past this and find the
strength to be back in action as soon as I can get back home. They are talking
maybe three months to even drive into New Orleans. I am at my Wifes cousins
house and Shrevport and just wish all of the other people were as fortunate as
I to have a roof over there head. Thanks for the offers of help!! Its the
things such as that, that help us keep strong! Joe Laura
