Apache is a web server. It is used so you can view the files made by MRTG

[WISPA] Content Filtering

2005-09-22 Thread Scott Reed

I currently use SonicWall's Content Filter for my entire network. (No discussion about whether that is good or bad, please.  It is bringing me cutomers.)  Problem is cost. I can not afford $1000/yr for the subscription.  Anyone know of a content filter that is relativly inexpensive and works?

Depends on size of antenna. If using a
parabolic or

dss dish (18-24), going 5-8 feet above ground, I'd highly recommend 2-3/8 dia

pole.  However, if a smaller antenna, 1.25- 1.5 dia pole is

fine.

There is a difference on wether you use Rigid
or

EMT type pipe.  Rigid pipe is of course thicker, heavier, and

stronger.  However, we often use EMT, because its lighter and

cheaper.   The 2-3/8 dia pipe is not just for stability at heights,

but also to have a larger surface for clamps, to prevent left-right rotation of

the antenna.   When considering windload, people often make the

mistake of only considering front or rear direct windload, but forget about

twist windloading (forget proper name), which is often more of a problem to

protect from.

Oh yeah, and don't forget to cap the top if you are
in an area that'll freeze. In the winter you'll get water inside and it'll
eventually bust the pipe at ground level.

Depends on size of antenna. If using a parabolic
or dss dish (18"-24"), going 5-8 feet above ground, I'd highly recommend
2-3/8" dia pole. However, if a smaller antenna, 1.25"- 1.5" dia pole is
  fine.

There is a difference on wether you use Rigid or
EMT type pipe. Rigid pipe is of course thicker, heavier, and
stronger. However, we often use EMT, because its lighter and
cheaper. The 2-3/8" dia pipe is not just for stability at heights,
but also to have a larger surface for clamps, to prevent left-right rotation
of the antenna. When considering windload, people often make the
mistake of only considering front or rear direct windload, but forget about
twist windloading (forget proper name), which is often more of a problem to
  protect from.

Thanks for the responses. I had originally
thought 4" something, but looks like I will look at 1.5" and/or 2".
I like that, Johnny. $150 to paint the pole brown and the
antenna grid and radio box green and who will see it beside a tree, which is
where this one will go. Scott Reed Owner

I have sent my family out of the area and will have some MPEG4 streaming
cams running during the storm.

30 miles might be close enough that you'll have no water or power or much of

Who's got alternate locations?

Also, for any potential staging areas how about some gps coordinates? I'm

Hopefully there will be people from the region that can make it in. Might
be tough with two of them back to back, two weeks apart.

I have a site where the only place to get a signal is about 5 off the
road and then run cable 100' back to the house. Only issue is asthetics;
customer does not want a big pole in the yard. What is the
smallest pole/mast/whatever you would use to get up 8 feet or so in open

[WISPA] FW: Hurricane Rita - Please Circulate to your ISPs

2005-09-22 Thread Jory Privett
Please circulate this to your ISPs.

The FCC is preparing for Hurricane Rita. The FCC has well established
procedures for assessing telecommunications outages and facilitating
restoration. This is true of broadcast, spectrum, and satellite. Of course
our procedures for assessing and facilitating internet services are not as
formal.

If members of TISPA or other Texas ISPs need to contact the FCC, please
consider me the point of contact. We may be able to facilitate resource
needs. This could include working with FEMA in order to get necessary
authority, negotiate fuel deliveries, coordinate telecommunications
restorations for critical circuits...

Perhaps individual Texas ISPs will not be impacted, but they want to be part
of the restoration effort. We can help coordinate that.

If your members might also be able to tell me assessment information. If
they have a network status page online, I would appreciate knowing its
URL. If there are other network problems that perhaps we could help
resolve, let us know.

Good luck.

There are about 100 or so unrelated group efforts (none any more
powerful or better than the other) all doing fine in bringing immediate
access to technology and communications without having Part-15 speak for
them in the gulf area and without any firm structural centralized
management so it really does not make any difference to me one way or
the other whether Part-15 is involved in this with us or not. I think
Part-15 is doing really good things. I know we are too. That does not
mean we have to answer to them for every step or run anything past them
before we act. Nor does it mean I have issues working with them directly
on helping. I applaud their efforts along with the other 99 or so
groups helping out down there. If it helps then do it.

Long story shortif you want to mesh with Part-15 then go right
ahead. I am not telling you or anyone else what to do to help. We are
all adults and can help however, whenever, with whoever we see fit. As
long as you are helping then that is good.

2005-09-22 Thread Marlon K. Schafer (509) 982-2181

Hi All,

The FCC has asked me for a list of wisps in and around the projected path of
Rita. I know of no extensive list for this.

If you are in that area can you please forward me your contact info (name,

If you KNOW someone in the area, I need as much info as you can give me.
Especially contact data and towns covered.

We are sorry that we are late to the game, however, we had previous
commitments that impacted our ability to help.

Please make your needs known to us so that we may fulfill what we can.
Additionally, we are attempting to clear up schedules for atleast
three of us to come and assist directly in your deployment efforts.

I have contacted Packet8 regarding their abilities to donate equipment and
services to the effort. I've found them to be a very reliable VOIP source.

I look forward to our being able to assist your efforts.

I wish you were here too :-) My arse is dragging and my love life is
lacking - - - - no wait - - -- - - -it is non existent!

Men, I have some pics of the Bay - - - Bay St. Louis, Ms that will
make you cry. I have never seen such devastation in my life. The 1st
time I drove in I had to stop on side of the road as my eyes filled up
and got a limp in my throat. It was pretty evident that I wasnt ready to
be there!! They tell me I need to ride down to the coast line and check
it out and I asked them (knowing the answer) if it was worse and they
stated that I hadnt seen anything yet. I havent had time just to
ride and look as the days arent long enough to do what needs to be
accomplished as it is. If you have ever said one prayer that was heard
by the Lord - - - - try it again on behalf of these people that lived
there. They are in the battle for their lives and having to deal with
FEMA and the RC !!! There will be a shooting yet!!

Men it couldnt get worse than it is/was in Waveland Bay St Louis.
If you can adopt a family to help them just a little it would be a great
thing. None of us are getting rich, but we are getting into OUR beds
every night, we are getting into OUR cars every night, we are getting up
in OUR homes every night and these are just a few of the things these
folks used to have, but somehow no longer own. Some one ought to
organize an adopt a family --- -get the names and addys, how many
childrenetc, post their pics and tell a short story about them. That
would be great and I will be the first to adopt a family - - -you have
my word.

Headed back to the bay this morning. MCI has a DS3 in GulfPort for us
and we started hanging gear yesterday. MCI said use their gear, but
someone hasnt done their homework because I know that it is a 18 mile
shot in 5.8 - - - - about a 70' fresnel zone, 125' on one end and 85' on
the other. There are 80' pines...etc in the path + curvature. I tried
to explain this to the man who had the gear and he told me he wrote
white papers and stuff and didnt make any descisions. This link is
doomed to fail and there will be extra climbing involved - a wasted day
and the people are still without, the hospitals are still with out. This
one aint on me I will say I told you so.

If we need to go as far away as Houston to get a backhaul we can get one

from EV1 Servers (http://ev1.net). Koree Smith, my previous Sysadmin, is

working there in Houston and he says we should be able to get as much
bandwidth as we need there. It is a massive data center with multiple
fiber backbones into the location. They also have redundant power
systems in place. They will not go down. It is a long distance from
there to the proposed affected areas but it is at least an option we
have if needed. This does not answer Marlon's question but it does give
us an option for getting things back online.

EV1 handles literally about 2% of the total web traffic on planet earth.
They have redundant grid connections and dual backup generation
facilities. I do not think we will lose them. I hope not anyway! It is
just an option. If they do not make it then we will have to look
elsewhere I guess.

If you are in that area can you please forward me your contact info

If you KNOW someone in the area, I need as much info as you can give
