I don't know. But since 98 is no longer supported sell them an xp pro upgrade. Then it will work. And you'll make some money. Vogel Sent: Monday, May 07, 2007 1:41 PM To: wireless@wispa.org Subject: [WISPA] Hotspot setup Is it possible to use MT Hotspot feature with clients that already have a public static IP address? I have a client that wants to be able to turn off their Internet Access when not being used.. they have a couple of computers in their office that unauthorized people may have access to when they step out of the office for a minute or two, and want to prevent those unauthorized people from using the computer(s) to access the internet. The set up is like this... client computers connected to a D-Link router, NAT/DHCP addressing. The D-Link has a static public IP on the WAN side. The D-Link accesses the Internet through a Tranzeo CPE configured in bridge mode, which is associated to the MT Access point. It is at this point that I would like to configure the hotspot, but only for this one client. Further info... The MT AP is also acting as a transparent bridge, receiving traffic on the AP side, and sending it to the network Gateway out ether1 (which goes through two more transparent bridges before it gets to the GW). The MT that is acting as AP for this client is on OS 2.9.35 The MT AP currently has a private IP address. I could put a public IP on it and switch it to a routed segment at some point, but would rather not have to do that before setting this hotspot up for this client if that is at all possible. My thoughts are that it would be great to intercept traffic coming from the customer's public IP and direct it to the hotspot's walled garden until they provide a username and password, the enable access until they either log out or are inactive for a given number of minutes, or possible after a maximum length of time. I know that I can use the MT to direct traffic to a walled garden manually (I have used it like that to manually disable a customer's access) but would like to use it with the client login/logout feature. If someone has some pointers, or is willing to help me set this up, I would greatly appreciate any help. Also, BB CALEA has only been done at the Olympics by a special team. But M&A activity has been increasing in the last few months - for many reasons. Exalt takes the cake in 4.9 GHz because of high guaranteed throughput (up to 55 Mbps goodput with 20 MHz channel) and sync, which would allow many more than two links to be deployed from a central location. They can also do sub-millisecond latency (or up to 5 ms for maximum throughput) and have adjustable channel sizes - down to 5 MHz, I believe, with 1 MHz spacing - to help one fit into cluttered spectrum. All of these things apply to the 5.xtri-band product, except that it can do 13 Mbps (in 8 MHz) to 216 Mbps (in 64 MHz). The integrated tri-band radio/antenna looks like the most flexible option out there right now for shorter links where any of the three bands would work. Re: [WISPA] PortaOne? -- another VoIP Softswitch company
There are about 1200 VoIP Providers. Many are doing wholesale targeting the ISP market, because Retail is too hard and / or expensive, unless you segment the market and do niche selling. There are LOTS of softswitches. The truth is that Asterisk is a fine softswitch since most VoIP services do not see more than 300 simultaneous calls. At 4 to 1, that's 1200 lines. That would make you Big. On a good Proliant server, you could easily run 300 calls. Of course, your router would have to be able to handle 300 I/O requests from the switch + all the other I/O requests, so you would need a strong box. - Peter Charles Wu wrote: If VoIP softswitches is something that you're actively investigating, you may want to look into Netsapiens www.netsapiens.com What's interesting is that their primary focus is on independent ISPs / WISPs / etc -Charles -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of cw Sent: Saturday, May 05, 2007 11:28 AM To: WISPA General List Subject: Re: [WISPA] PortaOne? Probably most useful to a startup WISP, it has some sample subpoena (s), court orders, etc. Basic info on ECPA, etc. The full PDF is linked from this page: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/nij/pubs-sum/210798.htm Investigations Involving the Internet and Computer Networks By National Institute of Justice January 2007 This NIJ Special Report is intended as a resource for individuals responsible for investigations involving the use of the Internet and other computer networks. Any crime could involve devices that communicate through the Internet or through a network. Criminals may use the Internet for numerous reasons, including trading/sharing information (e.g., documents, photographs), concealing their identity, and gathering information on victims. The report is among a series of guides on investigating electronic crime. -- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.org Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/

Matt Liotta wrote: That isn't content filtering as most in the industry would define it. Anyone can drop packets based upon metrics such as destination IP. Generally, when people ask for content filtering they are looking for high level policies that can block certain types of content e.g. porn. If you want to block porn, you are not going to be able to keep a list of IP/hostnames that are known porn sites. You need something more sophisticated. How sophisticated? Try answering the question, "what is porn?" Is a picture of a naked human porn? What about babies? What about medical imaging? Will someone's porn be someone else's art? Who decides? The folks I have talked who want content filtered don't want to have to decide what specifically is filtered. They just want their ass covered in case something comes up. This is where having a 3rd party who is in the business helps. That 3rd party needs to be compensated in order to take on the liability of content filtering, which is quite serious. I'd hate to be on the wrong side of this issue, whichever side it was. -Matt Smith, Rick wrote: again, Mikrotik. You got it, Matt, and that is why I ask how to do it with MT. My SonicWall subscription service works great for this, but if someone knows a way to do it in MT, that would be awesome. [WISPA] Hotspot setup
Is it possible to use MT Hotspot feature with clients that already have a public static IP address? George, You *could* do it that way, by poisoning your DNS cache (or de-poisoning it, depending on your outlook), but what would stop someone from using another DNS server, like Open DNS? RE: [WISPA] commercial router
Marlon, The two that I've encountered most in the field are the Allot NetEnforcer and Packeteer's products. The Allot software has gotten much better recently with detecting 'bad' traffic that gets routed through standard ports (80/443/20/21,etc). And Packeteer has some good content caching patents. Both of their prices are high though. Here's a decent write-up, it's a little old: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,901491,00.asp Though neither of those are a true 'router' but more of a gateway that would sit behind the router, so I don't know if that's what you are looking for. I could also recommend some open source projects for the DIY person. L7 Filter, DansGuardian, ntop, etc are the standouts. Also, most of the open source firewalls also do basic string matching on urls: *myspace.com for instance. Going down that route I would look at m0n0wall and smoothwall, both of which I've used with success. Are they trying to eliminate types of traffic (P2P) or are they trying to block specific sites? Some of the cheaper products do one and not the other. The better content filters have a subscription type system to do remote updates periodically to the product for an updated list with new proxies and sites they've flagged as bad (think Norton). There are some other products out there like photo no-no (www.photonono.com) that actually filter images on the fly. Though they were very hesitant to send me benchmarks when I was talking to them a while back so you probably need some horsepower to use them at scale. Re: [WISPA] CALEA Question
I don't think this is covered anyway, unless the guy is a permanent resident at the hotel. The subpoena will cover the suspect and any known IP or MAC info and I believe would cover a particular physical location. I was told that a subpoena cannot simply say anything, anywhere. It has to get fairly specific, and traffic from a Motel is not very specific. Lonnie On 5/4/07, Marlon K. It'd be one heckuva stretch, but by reading the letter (as opposed to the spirit) of that paragraph, many smaller WISPs would automatically be exempt. I know my office has "acquired broadband Internet access service from a facilities-based provider" (our upstream ISP) and we're enabling our customers to access the Internet from their respective establishments (i.e. our customers pay for Internet at their homes or offices). By the letter of that paragraph (and, to be fair, I haven't read all the context surrounding it) most any single-homed WISP would be exempt, as they could just say "go talk to our upstream." (I doubt it'd work for multi-homed ISPs, as that would require multiple upstreams to be tapped and somehow synchronized, which is probably technically annoying.) We use a DLINK hotspot router that emails me every connect and disconnect from our hotels. Use firewall mangling / packet matching ?
