Reply: [WISPA] Verizon in the Fixed Wireless business

2007-07-06 Thread Felix A. Lopez
Tom: Good question. The short answer is yes, the GSA
provides opportunities for "small businesses" to
subcontract or bid on projects. Please see here:

http://www.gsa.gov/Portal/gsa/ep/contentView.do?contentId=16100&contentType=GSA_OVERVIEW

I recall working with GSA Small Business Program while
working in analog/digital signal conditioning at
www.mstarlabs.com and later on power development on
Native American lands with GE Power. Each time the US
federal government indeed promoted opportunities for
qualified small business companies.

I took a company through the process and it is not as
hard as people think. Each state in the United States
has an Economic Development/Economic Vitality program
which teams with the Federal Government. There you
can find certain program.

Mario,
I see a couple of critical differences between the recommended lightning
arrestors (Transtector ALPU-ALVR and Polyphaser IX-ALVR) and the
Altelicon unit to which you linked below.

First, the Altelicon unit, like the Transtector ALPU-TSU that it intends
to be an alternative to, is designed to protect the Ethernet
communication pairs and 48 VDC power. VL, however, operates at 54 VDC.
The ALPU-ALVR is designed to support and this higher operating voltage.
The ALPU-TSU supports a service voltage of 48 VDC. Also, the ALPU-ALVR
protects the LED signal wire and Reset wire.

Additionally, the ALPU-ALVR supports the use of shielded CAT-5, a
requirement for VL. The unit below does not appear to have a connection
for the cable shield drain wire.

Thanks,

Re: [WISPA] Alvarion VL on AM Tower

2007-07-06 Thread Graham McIntire

Correct, ideally you should place one at each end of the cable, right
before it's terminated. They just clamp over the cable itself and
help reduce spurious RF by turning it in to heat before it gets to
your equipment.

If you're need to chock the cat5 and power line, I'd use a single
ferrite choke at the end of each cable (they're cheap). That should
help cut down substantially on outside interference on the cables.

Mouser and other part suppliers carry them as well for cheaper (not

Re: [WISPA] Alvarion VL on AM Tower

If you're in a pinch, Radio Shack part # 273-105 works.

Mouser and other part suppliers carry them as well for cheaper (not
sure on part #'s though, sorry).

Mario,
I see a couple of critical differences between the recommended lightning
arrestors (Transtector ALPU-ALVR and Polyphaser IX-ALVR) and the
Altelicon unit to which you linked below.

5.7-5.8 is not enough on its own. You also need 5.3Ghz or 5.4Ghz solution.
Thats why we still are spending time with OEM gear like ADI, Mikrotik,
StarOS, Deliberant, and similar certified gear. Its for 5.3Ghz.
Trango and Alvarion have been great for our Super Cells and 5.8Ghz.

I could certainly see how Trango could be superior to other multi-modulation
systems. Others would up and down speed, affecting overall performance
while Trango is going to be either working or dropping packets (which only
affects one customer, with ARQ off).

I am close to picking Trango but since Trango is discontinuing 5.3 due to
DFS requirements, now I'm starting to wonder if 5.7-5.8 is enough.

I didn't even think about APC. oops!

Here is a great standalone unit. Froogle has some good prices on them.

They don't seem to have the rackmount ones in gigabit friendly

Mike,

It seems to me that it would be no different than a phone line - - if you
do not surge protect it you stand the chance of losing your radios just
like

folks always lose their modems in their PC's.

This is what I use in the NOC and at my tower sites:

http://www.sparco.com/cgi-bin/wfind2?spn=A758105

They sale 8 module racks as well as about 12 or 15 module racks that are
rack mountable. I don't have any Alvarion - -so this may not apply.

RE: [WISPA] alternative for Alvarion VL lightning protector

2007-07-06 Thread Mac Dearman
Mike,

It seems to me that it would be no different than a phone line - - if you
do not surge protect it you stand the chance of losing your radios just like
folks always lose their modems in their PC's.

This is what I use in the NOC and at my tower sites:

http://www.sparco.com/cgi-bin/wfind2?spn=A758105

They sale 8 module racks as well as about 12 or 15 module racks that are
rack mountable. I don't have any Alvarion - -so this may not apply.
