[WISPA] WISP Directory - please register

2008-12-11 Thread Matt Larsen - Lists
Inventive Media would like to formally announce the unveiling of the
WISP Directory 2.0 at http://www.wispdirectory.com/ - now with zip code
search, ratings, reviews and WISP Technology used by each WISP.

Inventive Media has put a few hundred hours into revising the directory,
weeding out dead entries and filling out the information on incomplete
listings, and we now have over 1800 verified WISPs in the US, and 169
listings for WISP-related businesses. Our goals are as follows: 1)
Collect the coverage information for each WISP by ZIP Code so we can
direct customers to the WISPs 2) Show the FCC, news media and other
organizations that WISPs are providing coverage to an enormous
geographic footprint 3) Help define the places where broadband is still
needed in the US.

Setting up a listing on the WISP Directory is simple and costs nothing.
Click on the “User Login” button at the top and you will be taken to a
form that will ask for your name, username for the site and a password.
All accounts are manually approved to prevent spam, and you will receive
an email when the account has been activated.

To add your own entry, simply browse to the appropriate Category, and
click on the “Add your listing here” link at the top of the category.
You can then put in the following information:

- Name of the business

- Description of the business

- Postal Address

- Telephone/Fax

- Contact E-mail

- Website Address

- ZIP Codes where service is offered

- Type of WISP Technology used

- WISPA Member

If you have filed an FCC Form 477, use the same zip codes for the
service offering field. You can select multiple types of WISP
Technology, according to the mix of equipment deployed. WISPA Membership
status will be verified if it is selected.

If your business is already listed in the directory, go ahead and
register, then send an email to i...@wispdirectory.com
asking to have ownership of your listing
transferred to your username. Once ownership is granted, you will be
able to make modifications to your listing at any time.

Feel free to look around the site and offer up corrections for any
outdated or inaccurate listings, and rate and/or review any vendors or
service providers from the WISP-related businesses that you have done
business with. Encourage your users to use the directory and provide
reviews and ratings for your business – especially if they are happy
customers. This is a great place for WISPs to show how they are doing a
great job providing competitive broadband service – nothing carries as
much weight as a good customer testimonial.

If you feel that there is something missing from the Directory, let us
know. We have some other features that are in progress and will be
deployed on the site over the next few months, but would welcome any
feedback or ideas on how to make it work better.

If you run a WISP operation, or a business that sells to WISPs, please
take the time to register on the WISP Directory and help us show the
world what WISPs are doing to bridge the digital divide.

Thank you for your support!

Matt Larsen

Around here it snows like 1/2" every couple years and then people forget
how to drive.

Me, I like to drive down the main street doing donuts and figure 8's.

I agree with Tom - from this point on I have been doing installs like
that. Grids are not my thing but ARC and backfires are awesome!

We quit using grids completely after they practically decomposed into a
corroded blob at an installation at the Port of Maui a couple years ago. Now
we use14db backfires wherever possible, or if we need more gain, panels like
the ARC or pacwireless solid dishes. With their intrinsic radome, these seem

Yes, there is a spray (cheaper but doen n that the sattelite folks
use. There is also ot work as well) an iseophobic paint (very
expensive and I hope it works better - I will test some soon).

[WISPA] Canopy vs. Ubiquiti 2.4

2008-12-11 Thread Matt
Has anyone used both Canopy 2.4 gear and Ubiquiti 2.4 Nano &

Canopy works pretty well for us but the cost is getting up there.
Extra for an AP, extra for advantage, extra for BAM, extra for AES.
Plus more throughput would be nice. But without GPS sync I might hurt
myself bad with self interference.

Re: [WISPA] survey

2008-12-11 Thread reader
That would have been all the back in ... 02? And on the ISP-Wireless
lists, before they got crazy paranoid about competition or whatever it was
that caused them to start banning people left and right way back whenever.

I haven't been back there since, no idea how those lists go today.

Anyway, you said that residential as a primary focus was not financially
feasible, and most of that was based on the fact that CPE was not much under
1K at the time. This was before the advent of Atheros as a huge player in
the chipset market and wifi based stuff was mostly done with Lucent stuff...

I said I needed a 200 dollar CPE. Today I'm a little over that, it's FCC
compliant, and the flexibility of the platform I started out with has been,
well, great.

Ahh, the good old days of wandering in a wilderness of unexplored
possibilities. :)

I am curious to know if anyone does anything to prepare for lots of ice on
grid antennas. I know that it is best to use a dish and cover where weather
is prone to these kinds of things but some installs do not have the luxury.

I have heard that spraying Pam (or some kind of oil, regardless of brand)

Well, I don't remember ever saying residential wireless cannot be done,
especially since I've had many customers doing it for years. I have
frequently said that many come in to the business saying they want to do
a 100% residential play, to which I generally commented that a mix was
better and healthier, with commercial users tapping capacity in the day
and the networking weighting towards residential at night. That was an
efficient way to leverage your network's capacity. One thing I have
absolutely said is that business connections were the low hanging fruit.

Re: [WISPA] BitTorrent to go UDP in next release

2008-12-11 Thread jp
I think it would make great sense. It would increase security for the
peers as well, if it could get it from a local user more often and a
less often from a potentially entertainment industry monitored source.

We also use private ASNs at sites, and we have one Internet-facing
public ASN encompassing all our network. So if it had a means of
preferring peers with fewer AS hops, that would seem most efficient and
compatible.

Re: [WISPA] more Cisco VLAN help

2008-12-11 Thread Travis Johnson

Yes, every switch has 1, 104 and 105 in the vlan database.

I could try and do that, but I'm not sure how I could even check from
switch to switch? Each switch is in a different customer location all
over town, and would require one of my techs to go from location to
location and plugging in and seeing if they can get out? Is there some
other way to "check"?

Hi,

I am still having a slight issue with a new setup of a Cisco VLAN.
Here
is how things are now:

We have about 60 Cisco switches (3500 series) all connected together
(one after another) in a giant "ring". Every fiber port has trunking
enabled for all three VLANS (1, 104, 105). On two of the switches
(separated by about 20 other switches) one FastEthernet port on each
switch has an "access vlan 105" setup. We also have spanning-tree
disabled on every switch but one (neither of the ones with the
access
ports) and it does seem to be working correctly because one of the
fiber
ports shows "forwarding" and the other shows "blocking", which means
the
VLAN is going all the way around the ring (or so it seems).

However, we can not get any traffic to pass. I have even installed a
traffic sniffer and setup the switch at our NOC with that VLAN (105)
and
there is only an occasional broadcast packet.

Is there any kind of a limit to the number of switches that
spanning-tree or VLANs will traverse? What am I missing here?

Yes. We've been running it for almost 11 years now we only use it
for very basic monitoring (icmp monitoring of devices)... but the thing
that is nice is that it's very fast to alert for problems... almost too

[WISPA] Weather proofing antennas

2008-12-11 Thread Josh Luthman
I am curious to know if anyone does anything to prepare for lots of ice on
grid antennas. I know that it is best to use a dish and cover where weather
is prone to these kinds of things but some installs do not have the luxury.

I have heard that spraying Pam (or some kind of oil, regardless of brand)
should help for at least a few months - is this so?

2008-12-11 Thread Josh Luthman
Snow around here is usually less then 12". Anything more then that schools
may or may not close, depending on the current superintendent (we go through
this cycle - no closings, car accidents when coming into school, new
superintendent, lots of closings).

If less then an inch took out your power someone isn't doing their job
right...

We have had 1/4" sheets of ice around everything - buildings, cars, towers,
antennas, power lines hanging a few feet lower - and the power stays on for
most of the area and everything operates as it would normally. Except those
damn grid antennas...

[WISPA] more Cisco VLAN help

2008-12-11 Thread Travis Johnson

We also have spanning-tree
disabled on every switch but one (neither of the ones with the access
ports) and it does seem to be working correctly because one of the fiber
ports shows "forwarding" and the other shows "blocking", which means the
VLAN is going all the way around the ring (or so it seems).

However, we can not get any traffic to pass. I have even installed a
traffic sniffer and setup the switch at our NOC with that VLAN (105) and
there is only an occasional broadcast packet.

Is there any kind of a limit to the number of switches that
spanning-tree or VLANs will traverse? What am I missing here?

I've busted through big drifts in a truck with a plow, and in my car.
Car is more fun, as long as it's not hard or wet snow.

MT Documentation is very weak. It's a dim bulb, not a shine. They are
improving with the wiki though. Just now they are getting around to
updating the 3.x documentation by moving it to the wiki. They are off to
a good start and I hope they finish it.

There are lots of things not well documented, mostly featured added in
3.x or things changed over the years. Fetch hasn't been ever been well
documented for example. File naming conventions/rules, BGP docs was
never updated from v2.9 till they recently started putting it on their
wiki. Lots of things offer examples, but no documenting of the feature
options.

If you want good documentation, look at HP Procurve, Cisco IOS and
routers, Alvarion, Redhat, SuSE, Mysql.

Wow... schools closed? Really? We usually have to get 12 inches or more
PLUS a big wind (20-30mph) for them to close our schools here anymore.
Honestly though, there is nothing I like more than busting fresh, 4 foot
snow drifts with my truck on the way to work in the morning... :)

Re: [WISPA] survey

2008-12-11 Thread Jeff Booher
All-

I don't quite get what the major "change" we are seeing here is. Patrick was
an exec at one major wimax and pre wimax company ( alvarion ) and now he
works for Aperto, another major wimax and pre wimax company.

And as much as some people may not like to debate, I personally love a good
solid debate where people trade facts and argue their positions. Ultimately
that leads to education of everyone who participates. I look forward to many
more debates on here. :)

Yeah, amazing how stuff changes...

I once recall having a list monopolizing debate with Patrick that went on to
the point of rousing a mob...

Patrick arguing that residential wireless could not be done, and me arguing
that without residential, wireless was doomed. I wonder if he remembers...

Just FYI, Patrick. You were so determined that residential wireless could
not be done that I went out and did it.

Just wanted you to know that :)
