None in particular. I just gave the info that this particular one was a mesh.

 

This was a City Wide system without means to get backhaul to each radio, so 
backhaul was furnished to selected radios that had LOS to out PtMP sectors on 
the tower.  Those radios were set as “RAPs” or “Gateways”.  All the other 
radios formed a mesh using each other and the Gateway ones.

 

I did another system out in Silicon Valley. This was Tropos. Customer could 
drive at full speed down I-880 and not miss a beat, that we could tell.

 

Perhaps it is the difference in radios that were designed to do that , and 
carry a price tag to show for it, vs. the more inexpensive hardware.  Perhaps 
it was just the software.  I just know it worked great.

I have done Cisco outdoor installs with as many as 300 APs, CAPWAP based. These 
were mesh. Roaming went great. The City Manager drove with me in the car whilst 
streaming video, talking on VoIP and doing Email simultaneously.

She didn’t notice a single interruption.

 

I’m not saying that Cisco hung the moon, and they are horrendously overpriced, 
but their controller based architecture works well- especially if your 
backhauls are hardwired.  It is too bad UBNT has not figured out how to do 
mesh, and doesn’t appear to be interested. It would be so much nicer in our 
City-Wide deployments to not have to use $3,000.00 Tropos or Cisco APs!

 Wow, brings back memories. 11 years ago I deployed 3 test networks: Canopy, 
Axxcelera, and Trango. I chose Trango for ease of deployment, price(Fox) and 
throughput. I took down the Canopy and sold it but I left the Axxcelera up and 
running a small business park of 6 businesses. 6 years later I they added on to 
the business park and I still had some Axxcelera units but I could not remember 
how to program them, very cryptic interface but great throughput. I took them 
down and put up Trango, but I never had one problem with Axxcelera, they just 
ran!

Mikrotik was him first choice, I particularly have no preferences, some
applications I recommend Mikrotik some Unifi, for the big ones Ruckus.

I agree with you that MT has no roaming, we should force a kick, but I feel
that it is not a big problem in most of cases.

In design, funcionality, central management issues, I would rather Unifi or
Ruckus or Cisco. But for a small network it could work. MT needs to put a
step in indoor market, they did not yet, it needs a central controller
switch (not DUDE) and much more global networks resources.

Although I have in my network here a 240 MT indoor APs running. It works
fine among walls and forniture, but my experience with Mikrotik as an AP
for Tablets and Cell Phones in open spaces areas are not so good.

I've had similar experience with the Adtran Blue Socket product. Both
indoor and outdoor units work as long as the SSID's are the same.

It has a great feature set and is rich in it's technical capabilities,
though it's a pricey investment.

going to have is the ability to kick you off, forcing you to look for something 
better. Mikrotik on the client side (I assume) is outside of the scope of this 
conversation as most people aren't going to have a Mikrotik device in their 
pocket. They're using a cell phone.

I've tried MikroTik. 

I've tried Cisco. 

I've tried UniFi. 

I pretty much don't think there is a working way to roam from AP to AP with 
802.11 in an open system. 

The client holds on to the weak AP long after there are stronger AP's to talk 
to. 

I think this is just the way it works. 

Now, we are giving each AP a unique ESSID but keeping them bridged on the wired 
side and requiring the user to change the connection when out of range... 

Not the best answer, but it works much better for the clients who don't move 
much... I'd love a better answer...

Using a Mikrotik as an Indoor AP You can put in access list a 00:00:00:00:00:00 
mac address and uncheck default autentication in the wireless interface.

Here I recommend 0..-75 in the acl signal strenght range for a perfect roaming.

It always works fine.

Mikrotik will kick the low -75 client and it will connect in the new next AP 
with the same SSID. Same layer2 DS and diferent channel.
