You ideally want an SNR of >25dB. Preferably 30dB.

Seems like most (rural) environments have a noise floor in the -95 to 
-100dBm range, so a -65 to -60 is ideal. If your noise floor is higher, 
adjust accordingly.


I think the point I was trying to make is that you don't want to turn it 
down to a value *lower* than -65dBm, or your modulation rates could 
suffer - even if you have a good noise floor.
