Hi All,

I want to echo the message that Jeff just delivered. WIPSA is making an
impact on Washington DC and it is even being talked about through several
lobbying groups about the impact we are having in DC. I serve on the
Governor's Task Force for Broadband in Appalachia in the State of Ohio and
we had a meeting yesterday in Columbus. A representative from the Governor's
office was there and also the main lobbyist that represents Connected Nation
was there to speak to us. In his presentation, he specifically mentioned the
impact WISPA is having in Washington with the USF Funding discussions as
well as what has been accomplished in the TV White Space area. I was proud
to say that my company is a member of WISPA and I realized how much I need
to learn about where we are (WISPA) in policies and progress. A big thank
you needs to go out again to Jack Unger, Steve Coran, Forbes Mercy, Rick
Harnish and the MANY others that have been making trips to DC for many
years. 

I was also on a conference call with Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown last week as
he is looking for ways to help fund projects in Ohio for WISP groups. I am
very encouraged and impressed that our WISPA dues are being returned to us
in amazing ways. Thank you to the Board and the FCC Committee because we, as
WISPA, ARE making a difference. It takes times and space to turn big ships
and results are shown in numbers. If you know ANY WISP out there that is NOT
a  member yet, encourage them to join, submit their maps to the various
mapping authorities in your state and file your Federal forms. If you want
to be treated as a professional, we must act like professionals and that is
the BIGGEST improvement I have seen in the whole WISPA organization. 

It was great to attend ISP America in Orlando and see the maturity of our
organization as there were many sessions on "building your business"
including insurance discussions, accounting practices and CRM tools. I am
proud to be a WISPA member and I pledge to get MORE involved to help support
the efforts in Washington DC. Thanks again to all of the groups that went to
Washington this week to represent WISPA.

I've just spent an amazing two days circling the Capital, with a great group
of folks, spreading the WISP message!

We had 25 or so folks who split in to teams (the whole thing was set up and
implemented by Forbes Mercy!) and went to visit the Congressional offices
for each of the team members.  We found staffers who REALLY wanted to know
about what WISPs are doing to bring broadband to the unserved!  We got to
speak directly to a number of Congressmen and Senators too!

Some of these folks were not particularly technical.  Some were more
technical than the WISPs that visited.  The most powerful tool we had were
the state broadband maps.  EVERYONE can read a map, even if they don't know
a AP from the UP.  

My plea is this:  PLEASE make the effort to get your WISP on the state and
national maps!!!  If you aren't on there, for these folks, you don't exist.
If you aren't a member of WISPA, PLEASE join!  The power of numbers was
incredibly clear.

Lastly, I believe that these trips are going to become a regular event.  You
owe it to yourself, your business, and your industry to make every effort to
be a part of this process.  Get to know your Congressmen.  Get to know the
key staff.  Keep in touch with them.  Be a resource.  Come visit DC for an
Advocacy Day.

(Somewhat of a soapbox)

The whole "stimulus" plan was the first step to reward a "few" winners. When 
you see the red tape attached to stimulus awards, it should make one run far 
away. We applied because "consultants" convinced us that it would be a way to 
fund our rural areas. We, Indiana WISPA, heard a great message a few weeks ago 
at our statewide meeting from Dan Picker of Purewave on how stimulus funds were 
the biggest disaster towards stimulating anything. Those of us that wasted time 
applying for funds kept from ordering equipment, making commitments to build 
out our network in the same manner that got us where we were already and we all 
suffered for the delay. Suppliers had the worst year and equipment 
manufacturers sat idles. Now we see how a government can control the entire 
Internet business with one switch. The sad thing is, we are down to a handful 
of "real" Internet providers that we buy our services from in the US. How long 
will it be before the Government will be able to shut us off l
 ike they did in Egypt?

Yeah, why do you think the Feds fund 1 large broadband winner per area?
Reducing the number of broadband providers way simplifies feds taking
control over them, if ever needed.  Same thing with meet-me-points between
middle and last mile located in Schools and government buildings. Critical
infrastructure is now on Government property to ease Feds gaining access to
it.

If you ask me... The USA needs to continue to lead by example. Example of a
Free Internet, Free from Government control.
The last thing the USA should do is try to immulate Egypt's mis-use to
censor it's people.

Lightyear is not a MVNO even though the market themselves that way. The MVNO is 
associated with the NRTC and you have to become a member of NRTC to even get 
involved. The deal is not that great and you don't have access to the latest 
phones. You can only sell last year's models and the data rate plans are weak. 
My 2 cents.

I know of a company local to me that is a MVNO, it is Lightyear.

They are either a MVNO for Sprint or Verizon.

I could get some customers with this. I have turned prospective customers to

WISPA is considering doing another Regional Meeting in partnership with FISPA 
in Orlando on March 23-24 with rain dates of 24-25th depending on hotel 
logistics.  The WISPA Board will be meeting on this Thursday and we need to 
make a decision so that an appropriate hotel can be reserved and vendors can be 
contacted immediately.

I need to get a rough idea how many WISPA attendees would be able to make this 
event.  This is not a commitment on your part at this time, just an idea for 
preliminary "guesstimations".   Please respond to me either onlist or offlist 
if this is of interest.  FISPA normally holds three events per year and focus 
on such educational topics as CLEC, VoIP and telco circuit solutions.  There 
are many FISPA members also doing fixed wireless and they would benefit from 
our wireless educational tracks, just as many of our members may benefit from 
their tracts.  It appears that there are very good synergies and a co-meeting 
such as this would be very beneficial for our vendors "killing two birds with 
one stone" so to speak.

I met with the folks at Blue Mesh while we were in St Louis. I am looking into 
their mesh solution and at first glance, looks pretty good to me. Look up 
www.bluemesh.net and my contact there is Matthew Wheeler.

We are also looking at MOTO Mesh as well. I don't have anything to report other 
than my experience was good with MOTO Mesh when we did the Extreme Makeover 
Home Edition show in Bunker Hill last fall. We supplied the bandwidth in to the 
camp and ERS supplied the MOTO Mesh gear.

Have a small town 1500 homes that I would like some advice on supplying 
wireless to.  I have a tower on the north end of town that I can't very well 
add many more antennas to due to contract with tower owner.  The town is very 
wooded.  I was considering putting up 4 small AP's in various areas of town to 
cover it to a point.  Then the police dept got wind of it and wanted to add 2 
of their towers.  But not all have LOS to the main tower.  Is this a good use 
of a mesh network and what are the important things to know about Mesh.  I have 
lots of ideas but know knowledge on this.  My AP's are all 100% Mikrotik but I 
have not heard any good about MT mesh and data on that is very slim.  Help?

I know that we are constantly battling pricing in health insurance. We would be 
interested in how we could participate in a "WISPA" group plan and with 60+ 
employees and families that we cover, you can imagine our monthly premium. I 
would assume that in an association plan, the more that participate, the better 
rates could be negotiated. We would be interested in helping with negotiations 
if needed. I believe this is a great idea and could benefit WISPA as a whole 
and encourage membership as well.

I am curious about all the small operators out there.  What are you doing for 
Health Insurance?  Do you have individual policies?  Are you on your wife's 
policy?  Is there a need for a WISPA Group Health Insurance Plan?

I will be investigating this topic over the next few weeks.  I will most likely 
send out a survey in a week or two once I get together with an underwriter and 
see what the feasibility is.  Between now and then, I would like to encourage 
discussion to see whether it is worth our effort.

My goal is to offer a group plan that will assist those who do not have enough 
employees to justify an in-house group plan for their employees or themselves.  
Hopefully, we can reduce your cost and improve your coverage.

We converted to IP Pay almost 2 years ago and it was very smooth and we have 
had no problems since then. As we continue to buy companies, we have continued 
to transition them into IP Pay as well with great success.

[WISPA] Thank You WISPA Board

I would like to personally thank the Board of WISPA for the effort, concern and 
passion displayed this week in St Louis at the Regional WISPA show. The team 
has increased membership and taken this industry to a whole new level with this 
successful conference. I believe we took another positive step forward by 
naming Rick Harnish as the Executive Director of WISPA. We all have a lot of 
confidence in Rick and his ability to organize and move this organization 
forward in a professional manner. For us to get the attention that we deserve 
in Washington DC, we need to continue to move forward with a single message 
with a professional approach and having someone focused full time, I believe we 
can achieve our goals as an industry. I appreciate what Rick has done for this 
group since its inception and look forward to where we will go in the future.



I remember back to 2003 when John Scrivner, Matt Larsen, Marlon Schaffer, Rich 
Harnish and Mac Dearman began discussing organizing a group that would truly 
represent the WISP ownership instead of being vendor driven. The leadership of 
this group, and many others still involved in WISPA, has taken this industry 
into the light of the FCC and is now leading the vendors to create the radios, 
management software and new product development that is needed for WISPA to 
compete. Congratulations to each and every WISP group out there today serving 
customers with the much needed broadband services. I understand that we have 
broken the 400 + mark in WISPA membership and impressed FCC Director Julius 
Knapp with the attendance at this conference. If you are a WISP and have NOT 
joined WISPA yet, now is the time to do so. We need everyone in this industry 
to be actively involved so that we can continue attract the attention in 
Washington DC that is needed.



We could not be where we are today without the leadership and legal counsel of 
Steve Coran. Steve continues to represent us well and has brought attention to 
our industry. It is so nice to have legal counsel that "gets it" and 
understands our industry so well. Because of Steve, I will curb all of my 
"lawyer jokes" and change them to only "politician jokes"! :)



There are so many others that need to be recognized for their tireless work and 
dedication such as Jack Unger, Doug Karl, Brian Webster, Dave Giles, Charles 
Wu, Victoria Proffer, Jim Patient, Michael Delp, Dennis Burgess, Butch Evans 
and WAY too many more to mention. (I always hate to start putting names into an 
email because I am SURE that I have left some very important people out.) 
Please forgive me for not putting your name in this email. This is a time for 
our industry to sit around the campfire and join Matt Larsen in a rousing 
chorus of "Kum-by-yah" (with his words of course). This is the time to join 
together and recognize where we have been and look to the future of where we 
are going. We have some new faces running for the WISPA board and that is VERY 
encouraging to see people volunteering to lead our group. Don't forget to take

I don't post very often and I know that I have rambled on long enough. Thanks 
again to the WISPA Board for putting this event together and if you didn't

I feel the same way. I am hoping that everyone on the board today is willing
to stay. You have accomplished so much in this last year...ie: membership is
UP, progress is being made with the FCC with spectrum, individual state
groups are being better organized to work together. I will second MAC on
this and nominate the current board to stay on the board.

one box. I can't speak for him but he has been doing this for a few years
now.

RE: [WISPA] US Wireless Online Sells 50.1 Percent

US Wireless made a big announcement last year about teaming with Lightyear
Network, also based in Louisville to bring wireless and VOIP to the world.
It lasted about 4-6 months then fell apart. US Wireless is good at making
big announcements but nothing much has materialized as of yet. 

They mainly focus on commercial accounts only and have cellular service as
well. I have been watching US Wireless closely for the last year. I guess if
you have one tower in 18 big cities, you can claim what they claim??

The other point to that is.don't give up or be discouraged. It is just a
process. It does not need to be emotional at all. When you understand that
sales is a process just like anything else, a NO does not slow you down.
When you have a plan and work your plan, sales just happen. 

Now, having said all that cool marketing stuff, the reality is, most of us
have to manage our growth to manage the cash flow to be able to afford to
bring on new customers, which brings on the need for new towers that brings
on the need...well, you know the rest of the story.

I had a wise mentor teach me about sales. It has nothing to do with your
ability to talk, promise, convince or how much money you spend on
advertising. Sales all come down to the ability to prospect and sort out
your target customer. Once you get ONE good customer, the referral business
will keep it going on its own. 

25 leads = 15 conversations = 8 quality presentations = 4 qualified
customers = 1 closed sale

>From the 8 quality presentations, get 2 referrals from each of them
>From the 4 qualified customers, get 2 referrals from each of them
>From the 1 closed sales, get 5 quality referrals
Now you have 16 + 8 + 5 = 28 leads to start the process over.

I have one sales person that works this process everyday and is generating

Every area of the country is different on what is available but the bottom
line to sales is prospecting, sorting and referrals.

We had a similar problem once, except

It was a month of unfullfilled sales. Property owner denied roof access. 
Customer couldn't get line of sight or good signal.
So it was a month of hard sales work, but resulting only in losing lots of 
money, discouragement of unfullfilled reward, not a month of progress.

I think the most important step is not sales, its prospecting. (I'm not sure

if thats the right word. I mean targeting how sales are generated, so sales 
efforts result in sales that convert to income)

If all day is spent taking the wrong kind of orders, one can't make the time

to sell.  Its to tempting to pass up an attempt to take an order.

30 + was good, 50 would be better but there should be 100's of us there to
make an impact in this industry. We held the first Indiana WISPA meeting on
September 8, 2006 and had 63 people there representing 24 wireless providers
across Indiana. We are planning the next meeting for December 8, 2006 and
expect to see 30+ wireless companies represented. It was open to ANY WISP
that participates on the Indiana WISPA listserv and we did NO other
advertising about it. If you want to make a difference, we need to
participate with WISPA and each other and begin to coordinate efforts
instead of sitting back letting things happen.

The first meeting was a simple "let's start talking and organizing" meeting.
The next meeting will be with vendors there to make presentations to us. As
an industry, we need to organize ourselves in each state and have 100's of
us there at ISPCON in Orlando. Anybody else up for the challenge?

It is hit and miss for multiple page faxes, but for the most part 1-3 pages
will almost always go through.  If you tell Vonage the line is going to be
used for a fax machine they can make changes to improve fax performance.
Also, some faxes will perform better than others.  I believe Vonage has a
list of preferred fax brands/models as well.

We started out doing that with satellite installers as well. We just ran
them all out of their "garbage piles" of masts in our area. DISH has
implemented a new thing where they don't include the mast unless you request
it. Then you end up paying more for the system WITH a mast. We still have a
few satellite installers but when you are talking about doing 100 +
installs, around here, we have run out of satellite guys. :)  (The good
satellite guys make GREAT installers too!)

We have a friend who is an installer for Dish and Directv. Over half of 
his installs don't require the new arm that ships (existing mast, pole 
mount, or whatever), so every few weeks he brings us a couple of boxes 
of them.
Before, he was tossing them. I would find an installer and offer to 
trade him 10 masts/mo for free service before I go spending a lot of 
money on masts.

Come up and see what we are doing on our
WiFi Network. We have the ability to sell service by the hour, 4 hours, 8
hours, 1 day, 1 week……whatever time period you want to use. We do
this on our network today. I will get with you offline to discuss details, but
we are doing this today on our network. It allows truckers to get online while
they are in town waiting on a load or for any of our fixed wireless customers
to travel around on our network in any town that we service.

I use my Verizon Air Card in my car if I
can’t reach our WiFi towers. I use a free service for weather at www.nrtc.coop and download the True Weather
site. Go to that website, click on Utility Solutions, put your mouse over
Weather Services and you will see a link pop up to “Co-op Cast”.
Follow that link and it will ask for your local Zip Code. It also give National
Weather, Temperatures, Wind and many other features. 

 

I am not sure if this is what you are
looking for but it is FREE.

I am always amazed at the ideas that come out of this list. I totally agree
with Rich here about how the federal government keeps finding ways to slow
down the entrepreneurial spirit with their greed. It is like the frog story.
(When you put a frog in boiling water, it will jump out of your pot. If you
put it in cool water and slowly turn up the heat, it will just sit there and
get cooked.) When you back up and take a look at the big picture and see how
we got to the level of auctioning "air", it is apparent that the more we
accept from the government, the more they want in return. So, what is the
answer?? How do make progress in our industry and lose spectrum at the same
time because we don't have deep pockets?

Thanks for the post on FCC history Rich. Matt, I think you have a good start
to a good idea. Imagine accountability in our govt, schools, etc.

Way back in the time known as "BC" ... (that's "Before Cellular"), the FCC 
authorized different frequency coordinators in various markets to manage 
licenses.  An applicant applied to the frequency coordinator for the 
frequency, lat, lon, and power of a desired station, the frequency 
coordinator checked for conflict with other licensed stations, and the FCC 
actually issued the licenses for a "fee".   The terms of the license 
required implementation within a year (IIRC), and the license holder was 
required to submit at some interval (yearly?) how many transceivers were 
served to the coordinator to keep its database up to date.  It was (IMHO) 
rational, and served the market of radio users.  Doesn't sound that far off 
from what Matt describes.

Cellular changed all that.  In the early 80s the FCC feared an avalanche of 
applications for a limited number of licenses.  Cellular design dictated 
that the licenses be regional, permitting the operator to place stations at 
will within the served area.  But it was made clear that all licensed 
systems would have to follow the "standard" (AMPS) and be interoperable. 
They tried a lottery, hoping market pressures would force the multiple 
applicants to consolidate down to fewer applications (that deals, perhaps 
monitary in nature, would be made among the applicants keeping the FCC out 
of it).

Later when the first PCS licenses were issued it's my impression that an 
accounting type mentality had taken over at the FCC ... let's grant the 
license to the highest bidder ... and to maximize the monitary value, they 
made it clear that any carrier winning the license could put up whatever 
technology they wanted!  Interoperability in the interest of the nation's 
good was dismissed in favor of maximizing government revenue ... and the 
first PCS auction amazed everyone how much government revenue could be 
extracted in return for licenses.  Consumer service (coverage) for digital 
cellular plummeted as subscribers could receive no service from roughly 4 
out of 5 deployed towers, the US digital cellular standard was abandonned, 
and the rest of the world looked elsewhere for digital cellular leadership 
(adopting GSM, largely because of the simple fact that European licensing 
strategies were much more rational, which promoted their industry and their 
technology).

All in all I don't consider Matt's idea hair-brained at all, but merely a 
return to a more rational time when the FCC's mandate was to simply serve 
the nation's spectrum needs (rather than serving the Treasury Dept).

I wrote a 5 paragraph response to David as well on this subject, then erased
it all. I am with you Mac and will choose to NOT make any derogatory
comments at all. It just a shame to see all of these government programs
being given to the RBOC's and others that abuse the money.

Since when do the people on this list support taxation, waste, and
government subsidies?  Why should the burden of providing high-speed
Internet to people in underserved (typically rural) areas fall on the
shoulders of taxpayers?  I don't want my taxes to pay to expand your network
or for Joe User to get your service.

If people want services, they should live in a city.  If they want to live
in rural areas, they should do so with the understanding that services
(water, sewer, EMS, schools, cable, high-speed Internet, just about anything
and everything) are harder to come by and sometimes more expensive.  No one
makes people live in the country.  People choose to on their own, and they
should take responsibility for the costs and/or lack of services associated
with that decision.

Just my own 2 cents.

Here’s the story.  Laptop fell off
top of car on expressway (don’t ask).  It booted up.  I put it back to sleep. 
I booted it up again and was checking email and it went to blue sceen of
death.  Now all I get is disk boot failure.  When I take hard drive out and
shake it, it “rattles” a little.  All my company info is on it…not backed up
(again, don’t ask).  I have heard of places to send hard drives in and have
them rescue my data.  They take it all apart and what not.  Anyone know of as
place like this?
