[WISPA] Will setting up VLANS eliminate arp poisoning problem?
We've been having an ongoing issue with ARP poisoning one tower that we have, originating from some SM out there. We thought it might be a bad firewall at one of the County offices or something before, and it still may be? Nonetheless, these are all Canopy APs and SMs, just wondering if setting up a VLAN on these APs and subs would eliminate this type of issue. If not, do any of you have any suggestions? It basically cripples the rest of the subs on this tower when it occurs and typically we have to go through and reboot APs for long enough to see which one was the culprit... Hard to know if anything else is problematic under these circimstances. I I talked to my grandparents this evening and heard their power actually went out about 30 minutes after the Cullman tornado (they are on the north side of the county, closer to a northern substation and should not have been affected by the downtown cullman trauma in infrastructure) - i understand their power went out (and thus the TVA outage affecting all of north alabama) about 30 minutes after the tornado took us down downtown Keep in touch ; it sounds like network damage on your end isn't near as profound as the human damage. Hi All, I just got a notice that Quickbooks is going to REQUIRE an upgrade in order to continue to keep sending out bills via email. And we have all of 1 month or so to get it done I HATE Intuit and would like to replace them. Here's the work flow in our office. New customer calls in. Fill out signup sheet with all needed customer data. Assign static ip to customer. Enter customer billing info into Quickbooks. Enter all customer data into Access. Enter customer username and pass into RADIUS. Enter customer email account(s) data into email server. Enter customer data into Postini (if they purchase the filtering). Type customer signup sheet info into word doc and store in customer folder. Generate installation work order. Fill out check list showing what steps have been completed. This has worked nicely in the past and only takes about 30 minutes to accomplish. But now we're growing too fast and have gotten too big to maintain this. Between tech support calls etc. the office manager is having to bring in extra help. It's only a day per week and it's good for there to be two people there at least part of the time. No one should work alone all of the time. Plus, if she wants to take some time off she will have someone trained in the basics so we'll likely need to keep some extra help around no matter what. This mechanism also gives us a lot of double checks, redundant data points etc. With Access and Quickbooks we can run a very nice mix of reports etc. We do NOT have a customer trouble ticket mechanism other than the file on them. We don't track customers on a per call basis. That's not too bad because we're still small enough that we can normally remember problem customers. This would probably be a good time to change everything though. In my perfect world, I'd have a billing system (that handles all of the taxes for different communities etc.), trouble ticketing, auto server configuration AND deconfig. I'd want good reporting capabilities. I've looked at some of the commercial systems out there, but at $1 or more per month per sub for a full blown system I'd rather keep putting that money into the local labor pool. Freeside looks pretty good but I don't do programming or server admin work in-house. I don't mind hiring someone to set

Re: [WISPA] grant funds ideas
I thought I saw some posts on that? My main concern is that I do not want a community to be determined by Census. There are too many small communities of 50-100 people that are not on the census that need broadband. This to me is one of the major pitfalls of the USDA program. I could have funded nearly 20 communities for grants already had the rules left out the Census. There needs to be a better way to determine if a community is indeed a community regardless of whether it is reported as a community or not. The second thing that I would propose is the use of funds for obtaining licensed spectrum, including but not limited to EBS/BRS and PTP microwave links. Thirdly, there should be no salary cap as the USDA puts on Network Administrative positions that must be filled to help manage this growth. Quality Network Engineers and administrators are high paying positions, not to mention, engineers with the experience in RF, cellular-type technologies with the know-how to build a top notch wimax network. They don't do it with transformers etc. out here so it's probably not needed. But.. I'd at least dig down a couple of inches into the ground and frame up your sides with 2x8 boards. Use screws not nails and/or make sure you STAKE it very well. Concrete is amazingly heavy and blow outs suck. Rebar adds very little strength from what I'm told. But it will keep parts from moving when the pad cracks (and it probably will). 1/2 rebar should be fine. As Bob said, keep it away from the edges and top. I don't know that it needs to be 8 though. I always use rebar for my sidewalks and it doesn't crack at the bar. I'd also attach a ground wire to the rebar. When I did the pad for the house I ran ground rods AND a ground to the rebar. The more the merrier. Don't forget to leave at least SOME slope to the pad. You want the water to run off not pool up at the bottom of your box. You can build up the center of the pad with gravel (smash it down well) or rocks (I like rocks) to save on the amount of concrete you need. Lay out two levels of No. 4 rebar in a square configuration. Rebar should be minimum of 8 inches from top, bottom and sides. Use 4 small bricks or pavers to keep the lower level off the ground. Tie the two levels together. Pour, float, edge, dry, pull forms, mount box. It is not necessary to fill the center with rebar as there are no stresses against the center. If you are running any conduit inside or up thru the base make sure your stubs are metal. Nothing worse than breaking off pvc flush with the pad top! :-) No real structural issues here. [WISPA] Potential Dr.'s office asking about our network and HIPAA?
We are routed, but from any computer on the network, we can go to any IP on the network. So its like our broadcast is routed, but we're still bridged? Anyhow, I have a potential Dr.'s office that is asking about the security of his information across our network until it leaves the NOC. How do you guys do network security? Vlans? PPPoE? What can we do to ensure that we can comply with HIPAA standards for potential clients like this? Thanks in advance. -- John M. [WISPA] Remote Monitoring and ALERTING of battery levels...will these work??
We've deployed one of the RMS version 1 boards from www.remotemonitoringsystems.ca This has given us visibility of voltage levels on our batteriesBUT, does anyone know how to have these devices actually alert you when battery levels are low or AC is off...etc? WE use PowerCode which has MRTG built in. Would this work you think? If anyone knows a quick way to do this it would be great, if not, I would be willing to pay someone that knows how to do custom work. Thanks, -- John M. [WISPA] RedMax CRC errors resolved
I thought I would post this for those who are using RedMax gear. We've been beating our heads trying to figure out why suddenly two sectors have gone ballistic with CRC errors on the downlink. We replaced the cable on one and were about to on the other until we found that if we rebooted one of the SUs the CRC errors went away on the sector controller downlink. This made sense as when we rebooted the Sector Controller the uplink CRC errors went away. Evidently we had a couple of strange moments (high winds? tower work?) that may have caused errors, and then the CRC errors were cached so that every time we rebooted the SC, the uplink crc went away, but the downlink kept showing back up. Last night we rebooted all the SUs and so far our Downlink CRC errors have zeroed out like they were to begin with. Just thought I would save someone a headache in the future -- John M. We've been selling hot spot systems for the hospitality industry since 2004 but over the past year have started putting together a package for WISPs. We've branded the WISP solution Avansu (http://www.avansu.com). Avansu is a B/OSS provided entirely as a service (via the browser), no software to install. AP and CPE devices will need to use our firmware but once installed can be managed from anywhere. We currently have our firmware ported to half a dozen devices and we're working on adding more ports all the time. Avansu offers the following: - Billing (subscriptions, credit card payments, scratch cards etc) - Remote management, configuration and reboot of APs and CPEs - Monitoring and alerting via SMS and email (with automated failover if available) - Fully customizable login pages for CPEs and APs (including own domain) - Fully customizable credit card billing and subscription pages (including own domain) - Reports on usage and revenue for single nodes, groups of nodes or the whole system The main advantage of Avansu is that APs and CPEs work the same no matter what hardware (vendor) is used. Once the Avansu firmware is installed nodes can be deployed by simply copying configuration parameters from one unit to another via the server. We're still in beta for WISPs, we'll be launching fully in January 2009. Until launch we're offering free accounts so let me know off list if you'd like to try our system. Re: [WISPA] heavy usage customers
I just read where they received there third round of financing. Something over ten million which puts them somewhere in the 50 million range as a guess. Last I spoke with their CEO they were pushing 2 customers with an arpu of around $30. Sent from my iPhone On Nov 2, 2008, at 2:50 PM, Travis Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yes... I think Bridgemaxx has some issues to work out (especially with the economy the way it is now) and here's why. Honestly, I'm not sure what space they are trying to compete. They are using Alvarion's mobile WiMax (2.5ghz) product. We have service at our office from it and it's horrible. We are only about 1.5 miles from one of their towers and the best speed we have seen is 800k down x 400k up. Latency is horrible as well (usually around 100ms). In our area (population 51,000) they installed base stations on four towers. They used 18ghz Ceragon radios and created a ring around the city. So just the cost on the backhauls and Base stations is probably over $300,000. Then every single CPE is over $400. We are starting to see a lot of their radios have to be professionally installed (meaning a truck roll). I thought the whole idea was no truck roll? Seems to remove the mobile part of the service. Then they are charging $29.95 per month for service plus $4 per month for the modem rental. I'm not sure how they ever plan to break-even on their investment when they had to spend MILLIONS to buy the 2.5ghz license from the previous company ($7 million is the rumor). Then, they aren't truly mobile. If you stay within each city, you can get service by just plugging in the modem... but you can't drive down the freeway and get anything... so they seem to be in the middle between fixed wireless (WISP) and truly mobile (cell providers). My emails about a year ago indicated I was pretty sure they were in it for the short haul... meaning they would build it up enough to get someone like Clearwire or Sprint to come buy it. Now with everything else going on (economy, stock market, politics, mergers, etc.) I don't see that happening any time soon... so they may be in serious trouble shortly. Just my $.02 worth. Re: [WISPA] PowerCode
Mark, I was with you there around the same time with very similar sentiments. Among other things I was trying to get something resolved on our Vox Voip service and billing it through powercode. Although we haven't come to a solution on that, mainly being I'm not willing pay for it nor try it at the moment and instead paying my accounting lady overtime to keep track of Vox's bills and our voip customer overages. But, having said that. I believe the guys at PowerCode have made some very good changes, one of the main ones being the ticketing system you just mentioned. I've had a lot of success with our tickets and problems. They are putting out new code almost everyday, and they actually explain the bug fixes and new features on the homepage for every release. We are learning to use the new Inventory module which actually lets you barcode scan a Subscriber Mac address right off the box. Another cool feature that we haven't tested yet is the new Mac Address learning feature that allows customers to plug in their own device and PC will auto-add. Customer can check all this through their portal. All in all...PC is still the most advanced WISP billing and OSS on the market, hands down. And I'm with you Mark, I have a renewed sense of confidence in their support and flagship product, the billing, crm, and bandwidth management. Glad to hear you've got an Imagestream BMU. Trust me, it makes a world of difference. On Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 8:48 PM, Mark Nash [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I gave off a little rant awhile back about how PowerCode wasn't being responsive, and I'd like to update that. They are now being pretty responsive to bug reports. One of the first things they did was to set me up with a new customer portal so that I can create my own tickets for their support. I can login to the portal and see what's been done on my tickets, and there are email notices as well when a ticket has been updated. This, by the way, is the same portal system that the PowerCode software allows me to use for MY customers to be able to create and update tickets. There have been some changes, some major some minor. They made a fundamental change in the way that contacts are handled. This jostled my guys a bit but we're getting used to it. A couple of my issues were resolved. A big one is that my virtual server is now in my timezone! That was huge for alot of reasons (accounting, CRM, logs, billing now happens on the 1st day of THIS month instead of the last day of LAST month). So there are still several little things that are hanging out there, but I feel that my concerns ARE being addressed. Meaning, my TICKETS are being updated and I can see progress, and I'm happier now. I'm seeing new features all around PowerCode. I've purchased (though not implemented yet) an ImageStream BMU, so that should speak to my confidence level. That thing was $1900... Seems they are progressing. Mark WISPA Wants You! [WISPA] Considering ARIN and buying our own IPs....IPv4? IPv6
Hey guys and gals, We are looking at our first redundant fiber connection from a second carrier and feeling the need to have our own IPs so that this will work out well. Anybody have advice on where to start with ARIN, besides just fishing around on the website, and what should we be looking at buying. We have a little over 350 subs right now and growing about 30 subs/month on average. We have a block of 2000 IPs from ATT. We want to plan for future growth, and for IPv6any advice? [WISPA] Guy from Tower Dogs, in my office
Thought this was interesting... Scruffy/greasy looking fellow came into the office today with an application he had filled out. I told him we had just about everybody we needed but we'd keep it on file. He tells me he climbs, and of course, my ears perk up. So we start talking... Long story short, he's been climbing for the past 8 months for that Phoenix company in the Dateline show. He basically built the Clearwire network in Nashville. He's in his twentys, and his brother was the guy that fell 200' and died. His brother was from here as well. Thinking about hiring him...Phoenix paid him $11/hour, and he is Commtrain and OSHA certified. Talk about underpaidI told him we actually respect our employees when they risk their lives for us.
