Awhile back someone posted some information about a particular mount they really liked. It was similar to the one below. [WISPA] ConnectEd

Re: [WISPA] ConnectEd
It will be an interesting discussion for sure. We currently have service built to many schools, most with the capacity to provide 100 + megs. Most schools are purchasing somewhere in the 5 – 20meg range as that is what they can afford, including their current subsidy from E-Rate. We are providing service to rural schools and they just can’t afford more. Not sure how the FCC feels these schools will be able to afford 100+ meg connections and beyond that, where does the money come from to continue to fund E-Rate with what are sure to be large increased demands on the funding to support these larger pipes. [WISPA] Acros the border services
Hi everybody, I was asked by a bandwidth partner to see if anyone had any experience providing microwave shots that crossed from the US to Mexico, specifically, from Texas to Mexico. Since we live nowhere near, this isn't an issue that I have ever addressed or researched. I am sure there are a whole host of potential issues. Likely there are import / export regulations concerning the hardware, frequency use, licensing issues, etc etc. If this is even possible and legal, they may be looking for someone's help to build a microwave path that originates in the US with the other side being in Mexico. Is there anybody on the list providing services to both sides of the boarder or anybody with any experience that can say that it isn't possible? Thanks for your input. Re: [WISPA] SAF vs Trango
Exactly my point. It doesn't make sense that someone representing Dragonwave would state this is a $5k repair, not saying it didn't happen, just saying it doesn't make sense to me. Even DragonWave, which I think has the perception of being higher priced, shouldn't have a one side $5k repair/ replace on an ODU. The last time I priced a DragonWave path and a Trango path side by side, they were very close in price so at least at the time, DragonWave wasn't particularly out of line with the others in this space. We had one of the Trango units recieve a near-lightning strike, which completely killed it. We sent it in, and they fixed it for $600, (out of warranty). We put it back up, and it failed about six months later. We sent it in, and we had it back fixed from Trango under warranty, (since they had just repaired it six month before), in four business days. Their support so far seems pretty quick, and $600 for a lightning repair seems reasonable. Dragonwave was a total pain. The link was a fair amount more expensive than Trango, and when the ODU broke out-of-warranty, they told us we had to buy a new ODU -- for $5,000. It's now sitting out in my warehouse, has been for over a year. Still don't know why that ODU broke, they just said it was bad. I still think that the whole licensed link scene is a bit overpriced. I'd put them up like hotcakes if we could do 250mbps for $5k, installed. But, then, so would everyone else. Re: [WISPA] SAF vs Trango
Yikes, That doesn't sound good from DragonWave's perspective. At $5k, that is nearly the cost for the entire radio path, (not counting antennas, PONE, etc) Can't imagine why they would charge such a price. Were you working directly with DragonWave or through a vendor? We do most of our DragonWave purchasing through Tessco. Re: [WISPA] State Education Networks?
Marlon, I assume you are asking that question of me. While I can't speak for my State representatives, they have been very engaged in the discussion and are asking some difficult questions of the State Admin / IT. It isn't yet clear what if anything can be done about this now, but it appears the ongoing funding for the project may be in jeopardy. Lots of heated discussions seem to be occurring at the State Capitol over this issue. Re: [WISPA] State Education Networks?
Funny thing, ENA is the company out here that is partnered with Qwest to provide the management and ERATE funding applications. They are getting a fixed $1,047/school/month for their services. That is going to total ~$1.5million/year for management. Unbelievable. I think Qwest and ENA are partnering up all over the country to provide this sort of service. It should be criminal the amount of money that is being charged to ERATE and the tax payers when other more competitive options are available. They get away with the overcharging to ERATE by writing an RFP that only Qwest and ENA can win and then the schools are protected from the typical competitive bidding for the ERATE jobs. Perhaps we should write and file formal complaints with the FCC concerning the overcharging for services. In Indiana it's even more interesting. The state bid out control of the state networks years ago and a Tennessee Company ENA.com won and now controls all the public school network funding. We have 5 School corp.'s in the county and I have networks towers within a mile from each. But since I am not a telco or supply a fiber line they get each of the school's 2-5 T1's from Verizon @ $485/ T1. I offered a 10meg connection to each interconnecting all the schools and I cant even get a call back from ENA. Talking to the local schools just gets a phone number to call ENA. Re: [WISPA] State Education Networks?
Yes, we provided service to some WA schools many years ago when K-20 was formed. We still do some redundant service for schools. The difference is way back when K-20 came along, local ISP's really didn't have much of an ability to compete. Wireless was new and slow. It was hard to even compete with T-1's. That isn't the case now. We can provide more bandwidth, cheaper than the ILEC's can. It really just seems to be political. I am looking for a way to show the Legislators that other states have figured a way to work with the local providers. I heard the WA K-20 network was beginning to struggle. The Telcos haven't kept up with the bandwidth demand and again, local ISP's are able to deliver more bandwidth, cheaper. Are you seeing this in your market? By the way, where are you providing service? thanks for the reply. Re: [WISPA] State Education Networks?
Hi Jack, Oh ya, the fix is in to be sure. I watered down the information to try and be brief and to the point. We have been fighting for a while and the standard seems to be constantly shifting. We, myself and other local ISP's, were just at the State Capitol yesterday in front of the Legislators and Administration to have a discussion. Today it was announced they were going to hold off on a decision to continue moving the budget forward until they can gather a bit more information. If you are interested, here is the newest of a growing number of articles about the situation. http://www.idahostatesman.com/2010/03/11/1114092/idaho-agency-budget-delayed-amid.html Kevin -Original Message- From: wireless-boun...@wispa.org [mailto:wireless-boun...@wispa.org] On Behalf Of Jack Unger Sent: Thursday, March 11, 2010 8:43 PM To: WISPA General List Subject: Re: [WISPA] State Education Networks? Re: [WISPA] State Education Networks?
Yes, that is the one. Syringa has a beef with the contract in general, mine is more about the last mile portion. I am very supportive of Syringa's position as well. They have long said they would work with the local providers to help put the network together. It is going to be very interesting to see what comes in the next week or so. If we could show the Legislators other States that have worked with local providers it would be very helpful. I guess either that, or other States where they didn't and the project did not deliver on its promises.
