[WISPA] Eave Mounts

2014-10-03 Thread Kevin Owen
Awhile back someone posted some information about a particular mount they
really liked. It was similar to the one below.

Item #: MTPEVE:
http://www.summitsource.com/eagle-satellite-dish-gable-eave-mount-bracket-universal-support-outdoor-hdtv-antenna-aerials-with-swivel-easy-mount-setup-part-perfect-evemnt-p-6109.html

We tried them out and the guys loved them. Problem is SummitSource has been
and expects to remain out of stock.

Anybody have another source for these types of mounts?

thanks,

Kevin

I finally found some at katerno.com that we are going to try. Spending between
$20 and $40 for what we were spending $8 on seemed difficult to deal with.

Have you tried the Shireen dry gel? I’m addicted.

Stays dry and easy to work with until it gets wet. IF there’s a problem that
allows liquid into the cable it self seals the hole. Pretty cool stuff.

I do wish they had a better packaging system. I really miss the “rabbit pull”

INTERESTING!

I didn't know shireen made a shielded version. That's one reason we've only
used the d-gel for very certain things. It's not listed on our primary vendor's
site (streakwave).

[WISPA] ConnectEd

2013-08-28 Thread Kevin Owen
Do we know if WISPA as an organization is currently reviewing or plans to
review/make comments to the NPRM for the revisions to the E-Rate program. Is
WISPA following the discussions concerning the Federal ConnectED program that
wants to see a minimum connection standard to all schools and libraries of 100
megs with a 5 year goal of having access to 1 gig of available bandwidth for
all schools and libraries?

Re: [WISPA] ConnectEd

2013-08-28 Thread Kevin Owen
It will be an interesting discussion for sure. We currently have service built
to many schools, most with the capacity to provide 100 + megs. Most schools
are purchasing somewhere in the 5 – 20meg range as that is what they can
afford, including their current subsidy from E-Rate. We are providing service
to rural schools and they just can’t afford more. Not sure how the FCC feels
these schools will be able to afford 100+ meg connections and beyond that,
where does the money come from to continue to fund E-Rate with what are sure to
be large increased demands on the funding to support these larger pipes.

I think so. I asked the same question a few weeks ago and the response was
something to the effect of, Is this something WISPA members want to respond
to? The response seemed to be a resounding yes.

Now I just hope that it's something that we can get a piece of vs. telling them
to not do it.

We love the EZ-RJ45 units. Get them from Marsh Cable.

It’s the style where the wires go right through the ends of the connectors and
the crimper crimps and cuts at the same time. HUGE time saver.

I was curious what shielded ends members are using. I typically use the cable
that Cayman wireless sells, definitely not tough cable. I prefer the UBNT tough
ends as I have no issues with them, however some of my techs dread them. I have
purchased some other ends in the past but at a high premium. Anyways just
looking for some ideas as I am getting out voted on the tough ends.

[WISPA] Acros the border services

2013-02-11 Thread Kevin Owen
Hi everybody,

I was asked by a bandwidth partner to see if anyone had any experience
providing microwave shots that crossed from the US to Mexico, specifically,
from Texas to Mexico. Since we live nowhere near, this isn't an issue that I
have ever addressed or researched. I am sure there are a whole host of
potential issues.

Likely there are import / export regulations concerning the hardware, frequency
use, licensing issues, etc etc. If this is even possible and legal, they may
be looking for someone's help to build a microwave path that originates in the
US with the other side being in Mexico.

Is there anybody on the list providing services to both sides of the boarder or
anybody with any experience that can say that it isn't possible?

Thanks for your input.

have believed it until the CFO showed me pics of the PTP-600.

Re: [WISPA] SAF vs Trango

2012-11-03 Thread Kevin Owen
Exactly my point. It doesn't make sense that someone representing Dragonwave
would state this is a $5k repair, not saying it didn't happen, just saying it
doesn't make sense to me. Even DragonWave, which I think has the perception of
being higher priced, shouldn't have a one side $5k repair/ replace on an ODU.

The last time I priced a DragonWave path and a Trango path side by side, they
were very close in price so at least at the time, DragonWave wasn't
particularly out of line with the others in this space.

Yikes,

That doesn’t sound good from DragonWave’s perspective. At $5k, that is nearly
the cost for the entire radio path, (not counting antennas, PONE, etc) Can’t
imagine why they would charge such a price. Were you working directly with
DragonWave or through a vendor? We do most of our DragonWave purchasing through
Tessco.

We've used a few Trango, no SAF, and one Dragonwave. We had one of the Trango
units recieve a near-lightning strike, which completely killed it. We sent it
in, and they fixed it for $600, (out of warranty). We put it back up, and it
failed about six months later. We sent it in, and we had it back fixed from
Trango under warranty, (since they had just repaired it six month before), in
four business days. Their support so far seems pretty quick, and $600 for a
lightning repair seems reasonable.

Dragonwave was a total pain. The link was a fair amount more expensive than
Trango, and when the ODU broke out-of-warranty, they told us we had to buy a
new ODU -- for $5,000. It's now sitting out in my warehouse, has been for over
a year. Still don't know why that ODU broke, they just said it was bad.

I still think that the whole licensed link scene is a bit overpriced. I'd put
them up like hotcakes if we could do 250mbps for $5k, installed. But, then, so
would everyone else.

[WISPA] FW: New Broadband Public Notice has been Published

I know everyone (most everyone) is at WISPAPALOOSA and I suspect having a great
time.

I wanted to forward the following notice along to everyone is case you don't or
haven't seen this. In this case it appears a rural power coop is filing and has
applied for some RUS funding to build out some broadband. I haven't actually
seen the filing yet, just this public notice. If you are currently serving the
area, this is your chance to reply and let the RUS know you have it covered.

For those of you using towercoverage.com for your coverage mapping, please go
into your multi-coverage map. Click the edit button and check the box to allow
state agencies access to your map. They will not be able to get your map
unless you opt in to allow it.

We also urge you to make your map publicly viewable. This will allow folks
that do an address search for service to find your company on
http://towercoverage.com/northamericamap.asp

We have set up back end accounts for the below states and are adding more
daily. This will allow the agency to download your coverage maps for use on
the national broadband map. It will help in preventing the 500lb gorilla
from getting grant money to come into your area and compete.

Alaska
Iowa
Michigan
Minnesota
Nevada
Ohio
Puerto Rico
South Carolina
Tennessee
Texas
Florida
Georgia
Louisiana

The following states will be added in the next day or so:
New York
Maine

[WISPA] Cable CMTS

2011-11-08 Thread Kevin Owen
We are expanding our cable internet markets by acquisition. We are currently
using C9 CMTS's at the head end in each community. We chose these since we
need to be able to bridge PPPoE for authentication. None of the communities
are very large so we don't need high customer count capabilities on the CMTS,
what we do need is bridging.

Is anybody using a small CMTS for their cable internet services other than a
C9? We would be interested in exploring other options.

[WISPA] mounting bracket for power supply

2011-10-31 Thread Kevin Owen
Maybe someone on the list has a good source for the following...

We are looking for some sort of a mounting bracket for a power supply.
(Happens to be for a DragonWave radio) The power supply is 6x1.25x2.75. We
have a client that wants the power supplies placed in a sleeve or otherwise
mounted to the wall. We have typically used zip ties or plumbers tape. They
want them more secured than with a simple strap across them holding them to
the wall.

Does anybody have a source for such a thing?

Right, my example was only to envision the type or size of pole being used, as

too large for this application.

I assume you are asking that question of me. While I can't speak for my State

some difficult questions of the State Admin / IT. It isn't yet clear what if
anything can be done about this now, but it appears the ongoing funding for the

Lots of heated discussions seem to be occurring at the State Capitol over this

Re: [WISPA] State Education Networks?

2010-03-12 Thread Kevin Owen
Funny thing, ENA is the company out here that is partnered with Qwest to
provide the management and ERATE funding applications. They are getting a
fixed $1,047/school/month for their services. That is going to total
~$1.5million/year for management. Unbelievable.

I think Qwest and ENA are partnering up all over the country to provide this
sort of service. It should be criminal the amount of money that is being
charged to ERATE and the tax payers when other more competitive options are
available.

They get away with the overcharging to ERATE by writing an RFP that only Qwest
and ENA can win and then the schools are protected from the typical competitive
bidding for the ERATE jobs.

Perhaps we should write and file formal complaints with the FCC concerning the
overcharging for services.

In Indiana it's even more interesting. The state bid out control of the state

public school network funding. We have 5 School corp.'s in the county and I
have networks towers within a mile from each. But since I am not a telco or
supply a fiber line they get each of the school's 2-5 T1's from Verizon @ $485/
T1. I offered a 10meg connection to each interconnecting all the schools and I
cant even get a call back from ENA. Talking to the local schools just gets a
phone number to call ENA.

Re: [WISPA] State Education Networks?

2010-03-11 Thread Kevin Owen
Yes, we provided service to some WA schools many years ago when K-20 was
formed. We still do some redundant service for schools. The difference is way
back when K-20 came along, local ISP's really didn't have much of an ability to
compete. Wireless was new and slow. It was hard to even compete with T-1's.
That isn't the case now. We can provide more bandwidth, cheaper than the ILEC's
can. It really just seems to be political. I am looking for a way to show the
Legislators that other states have figured a way to work with the local
providers.

I heard the WA K-20 network was beginning to struggle. The Telcos haven't kept
up with the bandwidth demand and again, local ISP's are able to deliver more
bandwidth, cheaper. Are you seeing this in your market? By the way, where are
you providing service?

thanks for the reply.

In WA state the K-20 is strictly telco. (Verizon Qwest).

The WA-K-20 is pretty much a gold standard as far as educational networks

It sounds like the large corporate political fix may already be in

Yes, that is the one. Syringa has a beef with the contract in general, mine is
more about the last mile portion. I am very supportive of Syringa's position
as well. They have long said they would work with the local providers to help
put the network together.

It is going to be very interesting to see what comes in the next week or so.
If we could show the Legislators other States that have worked with local
providers it would be very helpful. I guess either that, or other States where
they didn't and the project did not deliver on its promises.
