[WISPA] What do you charge for a wireless router setup?

2009-05-05 Thread Pat O'Connor
I was thinking a $35 fee for on site setup. A $20 fee if they brought
the router in within 48 hrs of the scheduled installation date. Is
this appropriate? What are the rest of you doing?

Thanks,

Pat

If you bring the router into the office, it's free. Honestly, takes a
tech five minutes to do, and it's goodwill.

If you insist on having it done on-site, we charge our standard
truck-roll fee.

Yeah, I know. But after fixing what geeksquad or *shudder* Staples
breaks over and over (usually for free because I am easy) I just had to
throw that in.

Isn't it funny how your responsible for ALL computer issues because you
deliver internet access to people? All a sudden if their scanner or
 printer
don't work or even if their monitor don't work it's all a sudden your
 fault
because you deliver internet to them..

I hooked up to your internet 5 months ago and now my printer isn't working
right.. You need to fix this because we didn't do anything to the computer
 it's your internet. *shudder*

Re: [WISPA] What do you charge for a wireless router setup?

2009-05-05 Thread jp
If you setup a router, it's pretty much a guarantee that you'll be setting up a
couple
notebooks and a PC as well. Perhaps also a tivo, xbox, ps3, ipod touch,
printer, and who
knows what else. You should also provide good documentation, because you're on
the hook
whenever they want to add something, or take their notebook somewhere else,
bring it back,
and wonder why it doesn't work. $35 is fine for a high school student to charge
for an
onsite setup, but not for a business that customers might have high technical
expectations
of.

Nope. Best Buy and they are still there. Circuit city called their Geek Squad
copy cat service Firedog. But was to little and to late. Plus Best Buy made a
better job on pushing and advertising their Geek squad plus had a better name
and gimmick if you ask me that made them stick better then Firedog (kinda
stupid name if you ask me. Name didn't really reflect what they did and stood
for IMO).

We don't charge to set it up, if the purchase it to install with the
wireless installation.
We charge $10.00 to setup one they at install or if they bring it to us.
Otherwise, standard $60.00/hr on-site fees apply.
As someone else said, documentation is critical. We keep a copy of the
security key and password at the office because we get several calls a
month, I just bought a laptop and it wants to know the security key.

Re: [WISPA] What do you charge for a wireless router setup?

2009-05-05 Thread Brian Rohrbacher

Same here. Free if they provide it. $75 including router is we do
it. Why, because we want it secured so the neighbors can't have my
service for free, so we can password it so they can't screw it up, and
we also turn on remote management so we can help them remotely if we
want to. I watch the internet and by 10-20 dollar refurb wireless
routers and I think I make out pretty good. And for the ones that die,
we replace them no questions asked for the first year (because they are
refurb)

Re: [WISPA] What do you charge for a wireless router setup?

2009-05-05 Thread Blake Bowers
Guys...

Don't do anything for free.

Bill them for it, and discount that price from the bill, but
don't say free or no charge.

Customers will never appreciate Free unless they are
made aware that thing they got for Free had a value.

1Install router49.95
1Discount per Tom -49.95
Total 0

Now, they feel like you really took care of them, and
that FREE has a real value.

Same here. Free if they provide it. $75 including router is we do it.
Why, because we want it secured so the neighbors can't have my service for
free, so we can password it so they can't screw it up, and we also turn on
remote management so we can help them remotely if we want to. I watch the
internet and by 10-20 dollar refurb wireless routers and I think I make
out pretty good. And for the ones that die, we replace them no questions
asked for the first year (because they are refurb)

We provide a wireless router for free as part of the install. We
started doing that over 5 years ago. We also setup all their computers
(either cable or wireless) for free (except the cost of the wireless
USB adapters). That's what makes us different than the cableco or
telco. :)

Re: [WISPA] What do you charge for a wireless router setup?

2009-05-05 Thread Tom DeReggi
Agreed, We do the same. It didn't take long to realize that our support was
easier with a consistent brand in place, and kowing they were configured by a
pro quickly at install time, instead of timely on a tech support phone call.
Its factored into the flat rate price, automatically. When we get onsite, If
the customer already has a router in place, and it meets our standard and known
working, we will usually credit them $40, and provide free install of it. They
deserve choice of router, we just want to make sure our installers aren;t held
up, and that the customer already preapproved the cost for the installer to
install our supplied routers if that is what we determine that we need to do.

2009-05-05 Thread Matt
Free if they bring it in. Free to try to talk them through it on phone. If
they can wait tell we are in there area and have time just a small charge.
Special trip equals service call.

Never sell routers anymore if we can help it! Nothing like selling one to
someone 30 miles away and when it quits you have to drive 30 miles and swap
it on the spot. Ugh.

Ya know - I used to think that way but then I realized I was doing
that all the time and not taking care of the necessary things
including my family. NOBODY should complain about someone charging
fair market value for their time. Furthermore, you can forget the
goodwill bit - as soon as someone offers cheaper they'll switch. There
is NO loyalty in this business. If you think so, good luck!

If you bring the router into the office, it's free. Honestly, takes a
tech five minutes to do, and it's goodwill.

If you insist on having it done on-site, we charge our standard
 truck-roll fee.

We just set them up at the time of install. If they get a router later
we'll help over the phone. If we have to go there it's a standard $50
