Re: [WISPA] What is everybody using for alarms?

2011-09-25 Thread Patrick Shoemaker
Yes. In addition, you can create complex dependencies in addition to
normal parent/child relationships. For example, if you have a utility
power sensor at a site, you can create a dependency for
non-battery-backed equipment at the site that's separate from the
parent/child relationship built from the network structure. Same thing
can be done for any service that's monitored by the system... GPS lock
on a CMM, etc.

The notification structure in nagios is also tiered. So for example the
first notification for a downed service can go out to an ops group, then
if it's not acknowledged in time, the next round of notifications goes
out to the ops group as well as their supervisor, etc.

We use Intermapper but The Dude works too. Intermapper is less flexible but a
little easier to setup and maintain, especially for less technical people (we
have our tech support people adding customers, etc a lot)

We use Mikrotik's The Dude. To accomplish what you are asking, we setup
Parents to each node. Now, if the core router is down, we don't get an
email for each AP, switch, ups, EMU, or camera, but we get notified that
that tower's main router went down. Basically, now we only get the
individual towers that are down, and maybe backhauls to/from each one.

It is indeed SQLite3 which for some reason means when your db file gets
to 2GB the whole thing crashes. There are some nice features on the beta
which aren't usable as they record so much info. Seems this limit has
been there for a very long time but MT don't seem to bothered. Guess
it's because it's free software.

Along the same lines...

Is there anyway to preload dude?

For example, If you already know all the IPs and community strings of
all the devices that you should be able to see, I would like to enter
the info directly in bulk (Usually several hundred devices) and then
use Dude to monitor the deployment of the network...

Thanks,

Have been using the Dude as my production monitor for over 3 years,
works great. Monitoring DS3 and wireless backhauls, Metro-E, wireless
and DSL subs. Also Routers, switches and server services.

That is true in 3.6. Not in 4.0b3.

It's a gzip'ed tarball with dude.db (binary) and the files dir.

Re: [WISPA] What is everybody using for alarms?

2011-09-19 Thread Patrick Shoemaker
Here is the one I'm using. It checks to make sure the neighbor relationship is
good between two BGP peers (cisco):

http://exchange.nagios.org/directory/Plugins/Uncategorized/Software/SNMP/check_bgp/details

It's written in Perl, and you'll need the Net::SNMP module to make it work.

Nagios. For everything from BGP session status to shelter temperature. Very
flexible and easy to make custom checks. Add a GSM modem to send SMS
messages directly from the box.

Have been using the Dude as my production monitor for over 3 years, works
great. Monitoring DS3 and wireless backhauls, Metro-E, wireless and DSL
subs. Also Routers, switches and server services.

the bad habit to reset the configuration, but maybe it was the
unstability of the version

Do you have it in production without any issue?

Nagios. For everything from BGP session status to shelter temperature. Very
flexible and easy to make custom checks. Add a GSM modem to send SMS messages
directly from the box.

Re: [WISPA] What is everybody using for alarms?

2011-09-19 Thread Eric Tykwinski
We currently have two systems in place. Our primary system is Ipswitch's
What's up for SMS, and phone notifications.
As a backup system we also use Cacti and the threshold plugin which just
uses email notifications, but is mainly used for SNMP graphs for ourselves
and clients.

The benefit of Cacti is that we get notifications for Line errors and not
just line down situations.

Sincerely,
