That's what we're doing. grin Great minds and all.

It did come online for a bit yesterday. Not long enough to do any good
though.

Maybe they'll try a bit harder :-).

Reminds me of a thing that happened here a few years ago. Guy breaks into a
convenient store after hours. Steals a bunch of stuff, took this big box
thing from a shelf behind the counter that kinda looked like a safe.
Couldn't get the safe opened. Cops found it dumped at the park. Turns
out it was actually the camera system. Nice close up pictures of the
perpetrator at his house trying to open the safe. Camera system had
internal battery backup... He admitted thinking it was a safe. The
excuse, It wasn't me just couldn't be defended. Love it when technology
actually works.

Re: [WISPA] stolen solar site

2010-01-19 Thread Chuck Profito
Something similar happened a month ago to us. Our local canopy competitor
sent out a new installer to a subs home to pick up their equipment(in a box
in the garage ). He saw our Ubiquity Nano on the roof, cut the wire and
removed it the mount! They were very apologetic. So we picked up the
radio, reinstalled and sent them the bill..

Heya Tracy,

Turns out this was a misunderstanding. The equipment that got stolen was
the CPE at the office in TOWN, not the solar site out in the sticks.

Not sure how those wires got crossed, but the solar sit is still working
well.

We did see the cpe come online for a few seconds since we figured this out
though. It'll be interesting to see if we can figure out how to track down
who stole it :-).

 Deep sigh.

I put up my first solar site 3 weeks ago. Today it's gone. $3,000 in
 hardware, poof.

What do you guys do to secure them?

I hope the jerks fell of the cliff's and got hurt!

It's not like the whole world even know the gear was out there. Pretty

Just a thought but I'd authorize the CPE to work so they use it. Then you

Two of mine are on islands. You'd have to have a real nice boat to get
to them. That rules out most lower tier criminals. The solar repeaters
are on the property of lobstermen on the islands too. Lobstermen have
limits of how much they will mess with each other, as extra-legal
retribution is reality and they have to get along together on the same
pieces of ocean.

Use some of that nice steel rope from Lowe's. It is cheaper then chain and

Re: [WISPA] stolen solar site

2010-01-18 Thread Rick Kunze
I'm sold on surveillance.

IP based camera, remote recording. Unless they're prepared, masked and
stealthy, you'll have images. Although I've heard that converting an
image into something from which you can recover property can be
challenging. I hear there's an App for that. g

I once had a customer call with an outage. Upon seeing no link I went
to the site and noticed no CPE either! A day or two later I got a call
from a local guy who does a lot of the PC repair/housecall business
around here. He said some kids came by with my disassembled radio and
wanted to know if he knew how they could hack the service. LMAO!

I got it back, put it back together. Done deal.

There isn't much to see in a small town but what you hear sure makes up
for it!

Drag the welder up there. Couple of pieces of 3 x 3 angle and weld the whole
mess together to the mounting pipe. Cement the pipe in the ground with 6 bags.
They won't be able to carry it.

You'll need a grinder to service it or replace the panels

Lol

Good luck dude.

Re: [WISPA] stolen solar site

2010-01-18 Thread Tom Sharples
Radius Security, one of our vars, has a product that they apply to this
problem. It's a hi-res camera Mobotix attached to a 3G modem, with alarm
zones set up so that if someone approaches the solar array, it sends an
email alert together with a megapixel image of the perp to your choice of
recipient. Or it can be used with several alarm services companies that are
set up to work with these cameras, and will call the cops.
For solar apps the nice thing is that the whole package only draws 7 watts.
Of course an ISP could use its own backhaul so you wouldn't need the 3G
modem, just the cam, which draws 3 watts by itself.

In the WISP I'm partnered with in Texas, we have a very remote location
that has cameras. We had someone break into the building and steal 4 of
the 6 computers, 3 of the 4 cameras and a HUGE amount of hardline in the
fence outside. They didn't know, but the video was being stored at
another site. We got pictures of the license plate on their truck, full
facial images of 3 of the 4 people (the 4th was a woman who somehow
managed to not be in front of the camera at any time). They tripped the
alarm when they entered the building, and the county police were waiting
for them as they left the area. The video was used by the DA during the
trial. We made sure that the details of the case were highly publicized
in the area.

There are a few things you can do to keep people from feeling
comfortable stealing your stuff.
ip cameras from toshiba will record frames at intervals, plus having
motion detection with email alert. they will also alert you if a loop is
closed or opened.
always a good idea to have voltage monitoring for your batts on remote
sites. you can use packetflux sitemonitor, or bnd rmsboards. they allow
snmp monitoring and will sense open or closed circuits as well as having
analog inputs. This along with a monitoring program like zabbix which
you can configure with triggers to alert you via email, sms, or im, of
certain conditions will provide very quick knowledge that something is wrong
monitoring a NC circuit with wire looped through holes in the solar
panels will let you know if someone is messing around.
And it always helps to put up some signs indicating that there are
cameras monitoring their activities.
These are a few things I've found quite useful. I am of the opinion
that it doesn't matter how much cutting someone has to do with a
powersaw to get something they want, some people will do it as long as
nobody is watching.
Better luck next time!

We have a site where they sat there and sawed through the 1/2 inch
master lock hasp. After everything was stolen that was not bolted
down, they cut though all of the bolts.

Amazing really.

 Marlon,

Sorry to hear about the equipment. A Bouncing Betty or two would be
my preferred approach (I hate thieves). IR / Daylight Cameras with
remote recording and alarms are the only 'legal' solution though. I
also use big mean dogs at sites I routinely visit.

You may have to answer a few cop questions, but they know the same things I
already mentioned. They smoked some bad dope on the way to the solar
