RE: Wi-Fi expectations/service levels and validation

2021-09-23 Thread Kushner, Jeff
It is interesting, when I started doing wireless almost 20 years ago, before
lightweight really existed, wireless was always positioned as a best effort and
wired was definitely the way to go if a reliable connection was required.
Today, wireless has become a replacement for wired in many locations, but our
success is almost our downfall, the proliferation of wireless devices and
interferers makes the delivery of quality wireless connections a constant
battle. Not to mention the wide variety of client devices. And lets not even
mention the manufacturers and issues with the firmware and software. I guess we
can call all the aggravation a form of job security.

Hi All,

Coming out of a very rough fall semester start that left many of our users
suffering with "bad" Wi-Fi, we've since (understandably) been asked what
constitutes "good" Wi-Fi. We have not previously published information to our
community on what they should expect or on how they can validate those
expectations. Does anyone have any knowledge articles or links they could
share?

Thanks!

When building from scratch, it can be helpful to forget about what you had, and

A few years ago we had to "light up" a couple of parking lots. The light poles
there are on timers, so there is no power during the day. Trenching was cost
prohibitive as well.

We ended up setting up a mesh from a nearby building to send data to these two
APs. And for power, we used continuous power bridges from Solis Energy. At
night, the light circuit provides power (which is 240v) to the bridge, which in
turns provides power to the access point while at the same time charging up a
battery. Once power is disconnected, the battery kicks in and powers the AP
during the day. Only issue we had when they were configured was they gave us
802.11af injectors instead of 802.11at ones, which was required for the AP to
work.

It’s something to verify though. The problem with bollards is that combined
with the light poles, it makes the area very busy with vertical poles. It’s
supposed to be an inviting area, not one that looks like a jail (or crib).

Thanks though. All of these are being added to our “double check” list!

In my experience (YMMV) light poles have photo cells which would prevent proper
power from being fed to your APs during the day. In my case, it’s even worse,
there is one “loop” that feeds the power to all poles on campus, so all poles
light up at the same time, I cannot only power one up, say because I have an AP
on it but not on the others. And we’re not even talking about convincing the
power people to let you put something on “their” pole...

Hanging from roof is just a huge hassle, too high anyways and the cost in
wiring in addition to the loss you would get even using LMR600 would be too
much trouble IMO.

So either bollards or some kind of a pole or even a skinned building-side
solution could be best. If you have bus stop enclosures that are heated/cooled,
maybe they could help you cover the area?

We had to upgrade to 8.5.161.4 due to issues we experienced with the 8.5.161.0.
We had a problem where an AP would allow clients to associate but they would

issue, we have been running it for 36 days. But we won’t know for sure until we
get our normal client levels back with the return of students to campus.

We are running code 8.5.135.0 on one of our WLC 8540 pair. We can’t go past 8.5
because of presence of 3500 and 3600 model Aps which are not supported beyond

What code you are running in 8.5 train and how satisfied you are with it?

Is anyone running code 8.5.161.0 recommended by Cisco TAC? How stable is it?
Have you encountered any major issues in your environment?

Has anyone tried 8.5.16.4 (escalation code)?

Thanks in advance for your responses 😊

We use Cisco AP’s. We have one ssid for students, but it has multiple subnets.
When the Chromecast and Phone end up on different subnets, they don’t seem to
be able to connect.

Do any colleges have any workarounds or solutions for this?

Also, with the way these devices work, does anyone know if they need to be on
the same subnet after the initial registration? Ie IF we use a hotspot to
register them, will they work when they go back to their dorm?
