RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Advertising Wireless Coverage

2010-09-07 Thread Dave Barr
Ok, I got an answer back about the Cornell WiFi coverage map powered by Google
and in short what our web developer had to say is:

It's built using the Google API overlay with Java scripting at the browser
level and server level scripts on ColdFusion for displaying the data. There's
an online tutorial available from Google. Before doing this map, he had a bit
of experience with the Google API first. Other keys are to know what third
party tools work with the API and the rest is good web design.

My speculation is that they probably already have their building
footprints as overlay objects, so it's comparatively easy to add another
layer that depicts buildings covered by wireless.

Has anyone come up with ways of advertising information about their
wireless coverage that students and maybe parents have found to be
particularly helpful? Right now we just have a list of buildings,
most of which are at 100%, but some with partial coverage where we
include a floor plan/map. We are also going to put a symbol
indicating the locations we have started to upgrade to 11n. Just
wondering if there may be some better ways to accomplish this.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Advertising Wireless Coverage

2010-09-01 Thread Ryan Holland
Peter,

To answer your questions:
1.) We have not. Our floor plans are showing the aggregate coverage area and
not individual cells. Granted, the APs would obviously be within, but we have
not had much theft of APs (except 1 or 2 in the residence halls years ago).

2.) Our deployment is far from static, as we are consistently expanding
coverage based on departmental requests. We use SharePoint to track each of
these requests from start to finish, outlining each sub-task that needs to be
performed. Many of these tasks involve the updating of documentation and
subsequently the PNGs that get uploaded to the site. I can go in more detail
off thread if you'd like.

3.) When an AP goes down, Airwave shows it and our IT Service Desk can view
this. Coverage maps are not updated just for an AP going down, but if there is
prolonged construction (for instance), we will retrieve the equipment and
update the floor plan.

4.) All our RF designs are to match 2.4GHz as close to 5GHz as possible. We
then configure our Aruba ARM profiles appropriately. All the floor plans are
based on the RF design, not heat maps, so mileage may vary slightly. We have a
limited deployment of 11n, as we just started down that front. I can imagine
the desire to distinguish between 11n and non-11n on the coverage map, but that
is not currently supported. Let's hope we can get funds to replace 5,000+ APs
before someone asks for such an option to distinguish. ;-)

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Advertising Wireless Coverage

2010-09-01 Thread Methven, Peter J
Ryan, I've been working on something similar to what you've got set up
and I've a couple of questions about how you have set yours up, based on
some "challenges" I've had:

1. Have you had any issues with theft of wireless access points,
now that you are showing the coverage cells for 802.11a/b/g in a
building. (One of the fears I've encountered when trying to put
something like this onto our public facing website is that if people
know the exact 802.11 cell coverage then they can pinpoint AP locations.
[We use Trapeze Networks access points which look quite similar to fire
and smoke detectors so some people think they are not obvious to
people.])

2. Is your wireless deployment relatively static? (We are rapidly
increasing the number of wireless access points on our campus, and it
has been a bit of a headache to keep the floor plans up to date on the
website).

3. Do you update your plans for when a WAP fails, on your website
(until you replace it etc.) or do you have enough redundancy/replace and
repair WAPs fast enough that it doesn't really have an effect on
coverage?

4. Do you list 802.11a, 802.11b/g and 802.11n (2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz)
coverage separately (or are you planning to?)

(Apologies to Pete Morrissey for hi-jacking his question slightly!)

You might find parts of Michael Jorgenson of Cardiff University's talk at
Networkshop 38 interesting, as it covers overlaying information on top of
Google Maps:

I'm sure Michael would be happy to speak to you in more detail about it.

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Advertising Wireless Coverage

2010-09-01 Thread Methven, Peter J
Dave, I'm curious about how you are doing your wireless coverage
straight into an overlay on google maps. I've thought about doing that a
few times but we have the issue that even in the buildings where we have
"full coverage" there are black spots left on purpose in areas such as
plant rooms etc. Do you show a building has coverage if all student
accessible areas have coverage, or for all student and staff accessible
areas (excluding plant rooms/comms rooms etc.)?

Many Thanks
Peter

Pete,

Our website developers figured out a way to use Google maps:

http://www.cornell.edu/maps/interactive.cfm

Selecting the RedRover checkbox highlights the buildings that have Wi-Fi
coverage.

Subject: [WIRELESS-LAN] Advertising Wireless Coverage

Has anyone come up with ways of advertising information about their
wireless coverage that students and maybe parents have found to be
particularly helpful? Right now we just have a list of buildings, most
of which are at 100%, but some with partial coverage where we include a
floor plan/map. We are also going to put a symbol indicating the
locations we have started to upgrade to 11n. Just wondering if there may
be some better ways to accomplish this.

Thanks,

Pete Morrissey

Pete,

Take a look at http://wireless.osu.edu . There's a large image there that one
can click on that takes the viewer to our google map. There are icons for each
building that pulls up additional information, including links for each floor's
coverage.
