I don't know if I've quite lost hope to that point. :)

Our SEs with our various vendors are pretty good at working with us when
planning an upgrade to do at least a high level examination of bugs to see if
they are things that might impact our environment. Some vendors also have
designations for how "safe" they think a given release might be for general
deployments. i.e., unless you don't need the specific bug fix or feature
that's in version X.Y right now, it's safer to hold off until X.Y.Z or until
X.Y has been out in field for a while when it will be designated as "General
Availability" or something similar.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Cisco WLC5508

2016-03-25 Thread Scott Fortin
After playing musical-APs to remove all incompatible 1130/1240 models we
upgraded our 5508s off of code version 7.6.120.0 (deferred release) to fix
a reboot issue. Since all our APs were compatible with 8.2.100.0 (early
release) we decided to try it out.

The upgrade went well - all our APs came back up and we could see RAIDUS
sessions repopulate in ISE. Our team doing a simultaneous ERP upgrade
complained they could not load our MySMCC student portal. I assumed it was
related to the ERP upgrade but tested it out. Sure enough, MySMCC would
not load on the wireless. Further testing showed that no webpages would
load, except for Facebook, on the wireless. Testing on the same IP network
on the wired side showed no issues. Wireless clients could see HTML page
headers change from Untitled to MySMCC - Student Course Schedule, etc but
the page would remain blank. I could see TCP/UDP sessions to websites open
on the firewall to the Internet. Keep in mind Facebook is working in a web
browser, through the app, and through Messenger this whole time.
Aggravating.

We called Cisco TAC and they checked, our ACLs on the WLC & ISE, did packet
captures, etc. After a few hours, with our maintenance window closing,
they recommend downgrading to a maintenance release, 8.0.121.0. Downgrade
works as expected and clients regain full functionality. No changes were
made except the code version.

8.2.100.0 and later releases bring some great features with them. We were
fond of the new dashboard on code 8.2.100.0. We are also looking into
1810w in-room APs but will need to wait until a maintenance release is
issued for 8.2/8.3 code.

For the new wave-2 AP's e.g. 2800/3800, you'll need 8.2 MR1 which is do toward
the end of April. The 2800/3800 first customer ship (FCS) being mid-May.

Future:
Mobility express support is in 8.3, due FCS + 3 months
FIPS/CC, Enhanced Location/Fast Locate, and Bridge Mode (Mesh) is 8.3 MR1, due

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Cisco WLC5508

2016-03-24 Thread Samuel Clements
To follow up on Jakes comment, you're asking for a 'stable release' that
supports 'bleeding edge hardware'. If you're expecting to run the latest
and greatest APs, you should expect some code churn for the first 6 months
or so post-FCS to allow for show stopping bugs. If you look at the feature
navigator, it spells it out in much nicer terms:
http://tools.cisco.com/ITDIT/CFN/jsp/reldesignation.jsp

But in general, you're either running 'super-stable stale release' or
'feature release'. That doesn't mean that there is no such thing as a
stable release with new features, you just have to be aware of the risks
with any manufacturers new hardware and the software required to go along
(read: this isn't a Cisco problem, but an industry issue with everyone
Apple/Intel/Aruba/Ruckus/Broadcom/QCA/etc).

There is a newer version out, but we have not upgraded.

I suspect 8.0 MR3 will be out in near future.
