Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] DAS; are your happy with the DAS installation?

2010-11-18 Thread Urrea, Nick
Sorry about getting back to the topic so late. My question is really about if
anybody has carriers paying for their Distributed Antenna Systems on campus. We
have had a cell tower operator approach us about setting up DAS on our campus.
I would like to extend the question to include carriers creating hotspots on
campus and paying universities for access and/or infrastructure.

Our DAS isn't used for Wi-Fi, only cellular telephone.

What generation of Wi-Fi do you use with your DAS (11a/g/n)? Do you find that
perceived and or actual measured network performance changes with the DAS
versus stock antennas?

We have a DAS for a number of buildings, but we paid for it. It's really
expensive, but it works. There are a number of carriers and vendors who
are working in this space, often they may be coupled with plans to improve
your Wi-Fi coverage as well (which only helps the carriers offload data
traffic from their cellular networks). Institutions need to balance the
costs against the service improvements against how much independence they
can maintain with the various arrangements.

2010-11-18 Thread newtnoise
I am pretty sure he is referring to Distributed Anytenna System, given the
carrier reference.

To answer the question, we are in the process of doing the same, and I am
curious as to what those institutions with completed installs feel about the
results.

What are you talking about? Many different things use the TLA (tree letter
acronym) DAS.

Data Analysis System
Dynamic Animation Systems
Direct Attached Storage
DAS Keyboard
Denver Astronomical Society??

Please choose one :)

We at UC Hastings were approached by a company that specializes in DAS
installations. Their DAS solution supports all carriers. They are offering us a
free DAS installation. Their solution's revenue would be shared with the school
and they would pay for maintenance and monthly costs.

Has anybody on the list setup one of these DAS solutions and if you have are
you happy or dissatisfied with the results.

I'm sure he's talking about

Distributed Antenna System for Cell phones.

Since this is the WIRELESS-LAN list, I'd assume the acronym is for
"Distributed Antenna System"...

See eg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_Antenna_System
