RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Windows 10 Random Mac Address

2015-08-31 Thread Patrick Mauretti
I do not believe this is materially different than Apple's implementation of
randomized MAC addresses. They randomize them while probing wifi networks, so
that the device is not unwittingly being tracked or monitored. When the device
deliberately connects to an SSID, however, the MAC address remains the same.

Windows appears different in one particular way, to be fair, in that the MAC
address will randomize if the user chooses to forget the connection and then
reconnect to it. Which is definitely a very real possibility.

Does anyone have a list or reference of what hardware supports this "feature"?
A quick survey of some of our known Windows 10 users has shown no sign of it.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Windows 10 Random Mac Address

2015-08-31 Thread Heath Barnhart
So it is supposed to work like Apple's implementation? From what I saw the
device maintained the random MAC address after associating. They had been
connected to our WiFi for several weeks, so it should have been a known network
and not used the random MAC. DHCP logs didn't show discovery packets from the
device with the random MAC. After disabling the feature and rebooting the
device was able to reconnect. This came in late on Friday and I didn't want to
tie up the student so I didn't do anymore digging on the device.

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Windows 10 Random Mac Address

2015-08-31 Thread Patrick Mauretti
It does come with a user configurable option to randomize the MAC address for
known networks daily. That's definitely a feature that will break things if
enabled. If they also change it so that the feature is configured that way by
default, then yes, all hell will break loose. It's one thing to have a
knowledgeable user turn it on, but another to have it on and the user not know
what to do.
