Re: ...Any opinions on the Cisco 5508 WLC?

2009-06-09 Thread David Rees
Hi,

The University of NSW (Australia) was also part of the beta program. We
have a pair of 5508's that are currently controlling most of our
wireless network (with the old WiSM controllers as backup). The 5508 is
the way to go for scalability and I would also consider it if you are
interested in using some of its new features such as Office Extend,
which is a sort of hybrid wireless/VPN solution for remote offices or
teleworking.

As James Nesbitt said, there were some problems with the initial beta
hardware but this was then upgraded and so the 250 AP limit will
probably be increased with further testing. We are running the latest
version of code and it appears to be very stable (at least for what we
do).

Regards,

David Rees

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] ...Any opinions on the Cisco 5508 WLC?

2009-06-08 Thread Jeffrey Sessler
I was told that the 500 AP support will come with the next major release of
code (7.0?). Then again, given that the initial controller hardware buy-in is
so low (it's the same hardware no matter what the initial AP count), small
sites may find that two 5508s, with 250AP each, more appealing than one
monolithic 5508 with 500 APs.

Also of interest in the 6.0 code... While the 5508 can download code to 100 APs
at a time (traditional upgrade method), there is a new feature in 6.0 which
allows for pre-loading of the AP code. Basically, you load 6.0 in the WLC then
tell the APs to download the new AP code (they stay connected and up). Then,
when the controller is rebooted, the AP's swap between the older IOS image and
the pre-loaded new IOS image. Should make controller/AP upgrades much less
disruptive.

Jeff

>>> James Nesbitt  6/8/2009 11:19 AM >>>
Originally it did support 500 APs. Through a code change this number
was reduced to 250 because of some errors when approaching 500, but
the beta hardware had a 6 core cpu, not the 10 core that's in the
final version.

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] ...Any opinions on the Cisco 5508 WLC?

2009-06-08 Thread Johnson, Bruce T
Is the 5508 still under the control of the same relatively non-transparent
operating system? Can we see/manipulate flash or firmware/config files, and
monitor processes? Is there any hope for this being more IOS like now that its
on next-generation hardware?

Barron,

We were part of the beta program for this controller and it is definitely the
way to go for scalability. It's basically a WiSM without the chassis, huge
savings on power requirements and consumption. With a 10 core cpu, this box has
plenty of processing power. It's cool to do a code upgrade and see 100 APs
downloading code at the same time. You may contact me offline for more details.
