FYI - A recent Slashdot posting mentioned an analysis of WiFi performance in England that was commissioned by Ofcom (communications regulatory office in England).
A Register article on the Ofcom report notes that baby monitors and other devices were causing signal degradation issues and that wireless beacons were also consuming significant amounts of WiFi channel bandwidth: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/05/10/ofcom_mass_wi_fi/ The Register article has a link to the full report, which includes a number of items of interest to wireless system managers and engineers: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/research/technology/research/exempt/wifi/wfiutilisation.pdf Page 71 of the full report documents a finding that laptops that were advertising an ad hoc SSID for "Free Public WiFi" were sending beacons at 100 per second instead of the usual 10/sec rate! -Charles Charles E.
