There hasn't been any additional feedback, so I'm going to close this bug. If
the problem can be reproduced using the lates stable version of Wireshark, then
feel free to reopen the bug and update the relevant information.

[Wireshark-bugs] [Bug 12067] Unable to resize the packet list pane, packet details pane

I just found a workaround that may help point to the bug; the Packet Bytes pane
appears to be forcing the window wider to show a large number of individual
Bitstring tabs.

After I uncheck View --> Packet Bytes, I can manually drag the window to a
narrower size so it all fits on screen. The checkmark returns after quit the
app and reopening the same file, which appears to be a separate bug. The
window re-expands after applying the check under View --> Packet Bytes.

I was looking for solutions and found this bug. My observation is the same as
James Elliot describes: the main window opens twice as wide as my actual
screen.

I have seen this with various pcap files, and do not have the ability to debug,
but I can reproduce this every time with at least one pcap at this point. The
window size expands beyond the screen size after applying a filter for x2ap. I
tried exporting only one packet from the original pcap to a new file.
Filtering for x2ap on the new file containing a single packet does not resize
the window, so pcap file size or specific packet contents appear to be a
factor. Removing the filter does not allow me to manually shrink the window
narrower, but I can still stretch it wider - i.e. some minimum window size
appears to be applied.

File size: 6.7MB
Protocols in the pcap:
Frame
Ethernet
802.1Q Virtual LAN
Internet Protocol Version 4
Stream Control Transmission Protocol
S1 Application Protocol
Malformed Packet
EUTRAN X2 Application Protocol (X2AP)
Unreassembled Fragmented Packet

I'm saying that the unversioned --with-qt option should build with Qt5. That
is, the options

  --with-qt (builds with Qt4)
  --with-qt5 (builds with Qt5)

should be changed to

  --with-qt (builds with Qt5)
  --with-qt4 (builds with Qt4)

I'm far from a Homebrew expert, but here's what I have observed:

1) `brew install wireshark` does NOT install an application bundle.

2) `brew install --with-qt wireshark` DOES install an app bundle, built with
QT4.

3) `brew install --with-qt5 wireshark` DOES install an app bundle, built with
QT5.

`brew linkapps wireshark` is currently required to make the app bundle
available in /Applications.

And in case anyone else is unaware like I was, in all the above cases a
`/usr/local/bin/wireshark` executable is built, but running that executable
directly can result in bugs that do not occur when invoking Wireshark via app
bundle, for example:

Could you please clarify this point? Are you saying that it's necessary to
specify BOTH --with-qt and --with-qt{4,5} when running Wireshark's configure?

Thanks!

That's an excellent point, and not snarky at all. Thanks!

I've only been testing homebrew-compiled executables.

Yeah, sorry about that... I wasn't aware of the importance of running Wireshark
via the application bundle. I've been under the assumption that running the
executable directly should work.

Note that I'm not trying to be snarky here. The official Wireshark packages for
macOS are compiled with versions of Qt, GLib, and other libraries that don't
change very often and are known to work reasonably well. The Wireshark
application is installed as an application bundle and *not* as a bare
executable. The further homebrew diverges from the wireshark.org installer the
more opportunities for misadventure will arise.

At the very least I think it'd be helpful if
https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-core/blob/master/Formula/wireshark.rb were
modified such that

- It installs Wireshark as Wireshark.app if it doesn't already do so.
- It uses --with-qt and --with-qt4 instead of --with-qt5 and --with-qt to
install with Qt5 and Qt4 respectively.

I'm surprised to hear you say everything works fine with Qt 5, though I agree
that at least the packet list panes are resizeable there.

When I built with Qt 5 to get resizeable packet list panes, I immediately ran
into two new bugs:

bug 12580 - (Qt5) after obtaining a packet trace, crashes when quitting or
starting new trace

bug 12582 - (Qt5) app menus won't pull down

It seems nobody has tested Wireshark+Qt5 much beyond successful compilation.

I feel your pain! Sadly I am buried in side-projects which are what are pulling
me into Wireshark in the first place, for reverse-engineering synchronization
protocols used by DJ equipment, so I very much don’t have time to try to learn
the Wireshark and QT internals and help with this.

I can report, however, that removing it and reinstalling it --with-qt-5 made
everything work fine, so I am going to remove my votes, and just use the newer
QT version!

Thanks.

It would help if someone with the means and time to debug the problem could
reproduce it. So far that hasn't been the case. I've been building the Qt UI
using different versions of Qt on different versions of OS X, Windows, and
Linux a while now and yet to run into this issue.

Did you install the OS X package from Wireshark.org (as opposed to Homebrew or

This deserves more attention than it seems to be getting from the description,
because not only am I unable to resize the Wireshark windows, but they always
open twice as wide as my actual screen, so I need to drag the window back and
forth in multiple, tedious steps, in order to access elements on the left or
right hand sides of the window.
