They found the same confusion about the Record icon and noted that
the Play icon had 85% recognition, but Record only 42% and noted
that the Record icon was "Often though of as 'stop', particularly if

without the intention to add confusion to the discussion, I like to
suggest this:

1.) use a classical green/blue 'start' (play) button as that's
probably the 'commonly accepted' symbol to start an action, in this
case the capture action, regardless of a possible confusion with a
planned playback feature, which does not sound like a key feature of
Wireshark and thus should not get it's own button in the main GUI.

2.) Use a totally different icon to indicate the CAPTURE/RECORD
action, like: a camera

3.) Use a funny icon, like a 'wire shark' with wide open jaws, eating
up the packets ;-)

Interestingly the bad recognition factor for "record" seems to have been
largely the fault of the UK (my Mum?) and without them included the
recognition for the symbol is over 51%. Still not great though.

I was reminded last night though, when "training" my spouse about the
remote for the new PVR, it's not so much what's on the buttons (icons or
text) it's the position that folks remember.

There was a study on that very thing many years ago when the object of study
was icons for VCRs. (Anybody remember them?)
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=515hD47OVB0C&lpg=PA552&pg=PA553#v=onepage&q&f=false

For that reason, I suggest we either use a different color (green? blue?) or
(ab)use the Play icon and that we make the "stop" icon red if it isn't already
by now (I'm still using SVN Rev 48628 at the moment).

I've added a quick explanatory intro text. Please let me know if it's
still unclear.

Feel free to forward to any Wireshark users you know, the bigger our

I could forward the poll to the quite large Wireshark group in the german XING community (sort of a european LinkedIn site), but I think the poll isn't explaining itself enough for anyone who hasn't read the discussions in this mailing list. Maybe we can have an additional intro text on the poll page to make sure people unterstand what the poll is for?

Either way, we aren't going to have any hard data for the expected release
of 1.10 unless that gets bumped back a *lot*. The best we can do is
probably a quick poll, so I've created just that:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1VFyNGmHtbdl827XziWGIHX5KfoxuF4MIaigzQAJph00/viewform

Hopefully the results will be illuminating.

Re: [Wireshark-dev] Start and stop capture toolbar buttons?

2013-04-08 Thread Laura Chappell
Ok... I just gotta jump in here. I'm probably causing Gerald major headaches
on the icon issue.

IMHO, I think the "media control" icon look is going to cause confusion.
Specifically the red "record" button to start capture.

That red button doesn't say "start" to me. it says "stop."
cid:image003.png@01CE345E.A666FAE0 (Or perhaps I'm interpreting it
incorrectly and it is actually Hal cid:image004.jpg@01CE345E.A666FAE0.
grin.)

What about simple green/red with media control widgets inside?
cid:image005.jpg@01CE345E.A666FAE0

I understand that someday we may have playback functions, but I hope that
would be buried in a right-click function or somewhere else - not on the
main toolbar. Can't imagine it's a #1 requested feature.

I know you folks have put in a lot of thought on the new icons and getting
rid of the NIC card image is a great idea... but I wonder if going the
direction of media player icons (and the red "record" button in particular)
is going to cause confusion.

A GIS for "record button" returns a variety of styles, mostly round and red
with varying border sizes:

I'm not sure which is more correct. We could look at the built-in audio
recorder on each major OS we support but that doesn't help much. Sound
Recorder on Windows has less border and more filling, while QuickTime Player
has more border and less filling. GNOME's is all filling and no border.

The "stop capture" button is gray with a darker gray shadow.

Unfortunately this completely fails the Awful Monitor Test. I'll try a
different color as Evan suggested.

If you press either of them you capture packets. "Interface list" and
"capture options" are both round and *not* red, i.e. they're associated
with the "start capture" button but don't capture any packets. I suppose
to be more consistent we should make the capture filter button round and
not red as well.

Re: [Wireshark-dev] Start and stop capture toolbar buttons?

2013-04-07 Thread Evan Huus
FWIW:
- Audacity uses a yellow square for stop.
- Photoshop's macro recorder uses a blue square for stop.

Though honestly, I'm pretty happy with our new icon set as-is. Perhaps
changing the fill colour of the stop button (yellow, blue, other?)
would be sufficient.

Or, if we only ever display one or the other (so the capture button
magically becomes the stop button when capturing) then red makes
sense, although I'm not sure what the usability of that concept is.

Just my two cents,
Evan

OK, the filling in those buttons is a bit bigger than, say, some of the images
in

or in

although it's not bigger than the one in

The smaller center looks OK to me - is this a small-button (16x16) issue?

Also, the stop button in the first image in the latter search:

http://sweetclipart.com/pause-play-and-stop-buttons-996

is all red - should ours be? Or, alternatively, should the square be red, like:

http://www.telax.com/blog/2013/03/feature-friday-stop-recording-button

(the start button being redder than the stop button might be a little bit odd -
a red circle in a start button seems to be the standard, but maybe stop would
be helped by a red indication as well).
