BTW, I just realized we should also update
the schema for the wxl files since the schema for those files in 3.0 is
different as well (it now includes a culture and overridable attributes).

Re: [WiX-users] Registry Issue

2006-07-06 Thread Fredrik Grohn
The built in COM+ actions stores all it's data in a big blob in the Binary
table of an MSI, and the .dll files in a separate cabinet as to my memory. The
fact that it uses a binary file makes it impossible to alter any settings
during install. Actually you can't even specify the install location for the
dll's.

It's true though that they write the COM information directly to the admin
catalog instead of using selfreg. The WiX COM+ CA's uses the COM+ admin
catalog's public interface for installing components and that in turn uses
selfreg. So yes, it would be very desirable to be able to do the same thing
that the built in CA's does and write the information directly to the catalog.
However, I don't know of any documented way of doing that. But it is something
I would consider looking into.

The WiX COM+ CA's leaving registry keys behind has been mentioned before, but I
have never been able to reproduce it. Are you able to provide some information
on how I can reproduce it Joshua?

I just added this into the sca.wxs file myself.  In case anybody else wants to know how I did this, the code follows:
WebComponents is the name of my feature and I'm making sure this custom action is scheduled when it's being installed or being uninstalled (you can read more about the ! and & here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url="">)One question, though.  If I make a change to the source like this, what is my obligation with regard to the Open Source license?  I don't think it would be helpful to submit this change back to the community, but I can't redistribute the code if I don't, is that correct?

It would be great to have this functionality.  It does
require a CustomAction.  The CustomAction probably wouldn’t be that hard
to add to the existing server CustomAction code.  It’d be really
nice if someone signed the assignment agreement and provided that functionality
back to the community.

Yeah, I don’t think enough functionality is provided
currently to make this work.  You do need something like a GroupSearch
element.  If you’d like you could take a look at the code (start in
wix\src\ca\serverca\scasched\scauser.cpp) and help extend it.  I would
also encourage you to open a Feature Request so that if you decide not to write
the code, the desire for such a feature is not lost.

Hi
all,

Is
it possible to have wix add an existing user to a local NT group, only if the
local NT group exists? (I don’t want to create the group if it
doesn’t exist)

I
suspect that I need to do this in it’s own component using a condition
node. What condition can I check for?

There
is no GroupSearch node, is this what I need?

I
don’t really want to have to do this in a custom helper library if I can
avoid it.

Thanks
in advance,

Rob was right; what he means is that your top-level
element needs to be ,
wrapping your other elements. Something like (sorry about
the formatting changes):

That doesn't throw errors on installation, anyway.

[WiX-users] building wix (was RE: XmlFile - specification misimplementation)

2006-07-06 Thread Rob Mensching

To answer your question about building the WiX toolset.  You
can’t do it by just downloading VS.  We designed the build process
to work from freely available tools.  There was some early criticism of the
WiX project being a way to force people to buy Visual Studio.

So, now you just need to download the set of SDKs that is
documented in the “Building WiX” topic in WiX.chm.  It’s
a lot to download but the build process after it should be simple.

Definitely something you should bug.  K is just planning to
add *another* XPath so that repair and uninstall actually works (i.e.
you have one XPath to say where the element goes and a second XPath to uniquely
identify the element as the one you expect to be created/repaired/uninstalled).

The previous, er current, design does not handle repair and uninstall
correctly at all.  Oversight in the design...

It
appears to me that maybe there is a simple resolution.  When Darren
mentioned that he couldn't use the 'last()' function I begin to look at how
MSXML implemented the stuff.  It looks like if you just use the XMLDOM out
of the box it isn't using XPath but rather XSLPattern

I
think that some of the issues people are having would be resolved by setting
the SelectionLanguage property on the document that is being loaded.
Since the documentation states that 'ElementPath' is 'The XPath of the element
to be modified', the default use of XSLPattern seems to cause people much
confusion.

Should
I open a bug for this change or is this something that is irrelevant because K
is going to be reworking the stuff?

- specification misimplementation

A
conversation between Michael Cline and Rob Mensching has clarified the state of
XmlFile, but in case this information can help anyone else, or someone can
suggest a workaround to my problem, I hereby submit the results of some recent
research on XmlFile.

XmlFile’s
XPath implementation is incorrect with regard to position indexing.
Specifically, the first “proximity position” (or NodeSet index) in
the XPath specification is 1 (http://www.w3.org/TR/xpath#dt-proximity-position);
in XmlFile, it is 0. In the following example XML file, /abc/mult[1]
refers to the only element in the file, but specifying this path
will cause XmlFile to throw an error, saying the node could not be found (using
“/abc/mult[0]” returns the result we had expected):

a

In
addition, XmlFile does not appear to support the last() function. This
is a severe disadvantage with the current create-then-modify implementation,
since as far as I can see (though I am an XPath newbie), it is necessary to use
last() if one wants to add, for example, a to
.NET’s security.config; because there are multiple
elements already, we can know which one we have just created only by the fact
that it was the last added. This is the problem for which I need a
workaround if anyone has one; since last() always fails, I do not know how to
specify a just-added node for future modifications. I have a working
demonstration of both these bugs which I shall submit to the SourceForge bug
tracker directly; I haven’t yet got the WixCA to build under VS.NET 2003,
but if I succeed I will try to submit patches as well.

I
want to express my appreciation for the WiX toolset, but the time wasted
discovering this sort of error can be significant. Has there been any
consideration of a robust test suite for code like this?

1.  The XPath
processing is handled by MSXML.  We’re at the mercy of any
bugs/non-spec compliance they have.

2.  The
create/modify pattern is exactly what was discussed and will be changing as K
gets time.

3.  “Time
wasted discovering this sort of error” is time that someone has to spend
somewhere.  Ideally we capture the time spent such that others can learn
from who ever hit it first.  I see that you opened a bug on the issue,
thanks much.  I’m not sure there is much we can do about it (save
switching to a completely different XML/XPath/XSL processor... something
I’m not too keen on) but hopefully it’ll save other people time.

4.  As for a
robust test suite, there has been discussion about this but nobody has done the
work yet.  Would you like to lead the charge here and start developing it?

XmlFile - specification misimplementation

A conversation between Michael Cline and Rob Mensching has
clarified the state of XmlFile, but in case this information can help anyone
else, or someone can suggest a workaround to my problem, I hereby submit the
results of some recent research on XmlFile.

XmlFile’s XPath implementation is incorrect with
regard to position indexing. Specifically, the first “proximity
position” (or NodeSet index) in the XPath specification is 1 (http://www.w3.org/TR/xpath#dt-proximity-position);
in XmlFile, it is 0. In the following example XML file, /abc/mult[1] refers to the only element in the file, but specifying this path will cause XmlFile to throw
an error, saying the node could not be found (using “/abc/mult[0]”
returns the result we had expected):

a

In addition, XmlFile does not appear to support the last() function. This is a severe
disadvantage with the current create-then-modify implementation, since as far
as I can see (though I am an XPath newbie), it is necessary to use last() if one wants to add, for example, a
to .NET’s security.config; because there are multiple
elements already, we can know which one we have just
created only by the fact that it was the last added. This is the problem for which I need a workaround if anyone has one;
since last() always fails, I do not know how to specify a just-added node for
future modifications. I have a working demonstration of both these
bugs which I shall submit to the SourceForge bug tracker directly; I
haven’t yet got the WixCA to build under VS.NET 2003, but if I succeed I
will try to submit patches as well.

I want to express my appreciation for the WiX toolset, but
the time wasted discovering this sort of error can be significant. Has there
been any consideration of a robust test suite for code like this?

Re: [WiX-users] XmlFile - specification misimplementation

2006-07-06 Thread Michael Cline

It appears to me that maybe there is a simple
resolution.  When Darren mentioned that he couldn't use the 'last()'
function I begin to look at how MSXML implemented the stuff.  It looks like
if you just use the XMLDOM out of the box it isn't using XPath but rather
XSLPattern
http://windowssdk.msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms766391.aspx

I think that some of the issues people are having
would be resolved by setting the SelectionLanguage property on the document that
is being loaded.  Since the documentation states that 'ElementPath' is 'The
XPath of the element to be modified', the default use of XSLPattern seems to
cause people much confusion.

Should I open a bug for this change or is this
something that is irrelevant because K is going to be reworking the
stuff?

According to the docs the errors means
The directory entry '[2]' does not exist in the Directory table.
As for what '[2]' is, you'd have to look in the Windows event log or log the install.

I find this link handy for working out what obscure error numbers mean.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the information - I was expecting an error regarding the DesktopFolder, but instead got this:

"The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2727. The arguments are: WindowsFolder, , "

Any thoughts as to the cause ?

2006-07-06 Thread Hanison, Jack

Hi all,

Is it possible to have wix add an existing user to a local NT
group, only if the local NT group exists? (I don’t want to create the
group if it doesn’t exist)

I suspect that I need to do this in it’s own component
using a condition node. What condition can I check for?

There is no GroupSearch node, is this what I need?

I don’t really want to have to do this in a custom
helper library if I can avoid it.

Thanks in advance,

Jack Hanison

It's just a property. Create it like you would any other. What it will do is
enforce you to have
administrative rights in order to run the installer. I suggested it because if
that worked then it
would definitely be just a rights issue, instead of some setting being wrong.

2006-07-06 Thread Simon Topley

Hi Rob
(Hamflett),
I've not
come across "allusers", where would I find it?
..I'm on
WIX 2.0.3719.0 (this in itself could be a problem)

Out of interest, what happens if you set the ALLUSERS
property to 1?

Installing/Starting a service, the simple way.

Usually,
this means your service has some dependency that hasn't been completely
installed by the time StartServices is called.  A favorite way to hit this
is to have a managed code service that depends on an assembly that is being
installed to the GAC.  Because assemblies aren't committed to the GAC until
InstallFinalize, the assembly won't be found in the GAC until the install is
complete.

I have
managed to get it to install my services using the code below, however I still
get errored when it tries to start the service. I can start the services
manually post installation (if I supress the "StartService"
action).

Any
ideas anyone?

service, the simple way.

Hello again
all,

I'm having real
trouble installing and starting a service, I have made a simple installer that
just installs one file and tries to install it as a service and start it... I
get the standard error message when installing "Failed to start service "My
Service""

Here is the wxs
file... ANYONE please is there something simple I'm missing
here?

xml version='1.0' encoding='windows-1252'?>
