Re: [WiX-users] WixPdbPath property

Exactly my point: how often do you build an installer and not move it to
some drop location?

If for some reason that is sensitive information for you, you can suppress
the information. The property would not be as helpful if you copy into a
completely different tree on the drop location.

This property contains a full local path, which may contain sensitive

We have a need to install additional files when doing a patch. As a result
patching a patch requires access to original source.

Is it possible to have patch install new files without access to original
source?

MsiGetProductInfo(INSTALLPROPERTY_LOCALPACKAGE) does not necessarily return

So this code is not guaranteed to work. Dead end?

No real error checking, just stuck together code using VS 2010 UpgradeCode as

UINT eres = MsiEnumRelatedProducts

There are methods on the automation objects that you can call to resolve a
product code that machines and upgrade code then get the file path to the
cached MSI for that product code and then open the database to get access to
the summary information stream and then access the template summary
property.

I'd give you samples but I'm not sure if you are using C++, VBScript or C#.

If it's working ok you should get a result something like "Intel64;1033"or

Subject: [WiX-users] Detect VC++ runtime version on target system

The WiX help recommends to deploy the Visual C++ runtime using merge
modules. I refer to section "How To: Install the Visual C++ Redistributable
with your installer". While this is possible, I don't want to include the
MSM in every MSI I will generate. Instead I prefer to add this to the
bootstrapper with Votive and MSBuild.

But this would allow installing a C++ program that might will not run, when
the bootstrapper is not used but the MSI is ran directly. Therefore I would
like to check if the required version of the C++ run time is installed on
the target system. This could be done with a RegistrySearch. But this allows
only accessing registry values. I would like to do something like this:

How can the condition distinguish between "an empty default value" and "key
not in registry"?
How can this test achieved?
What is the best way to check that the required or a newer version of the
VC++ runtime is installed?

Regards,
Helge

[WiX-users] Confusionm around Privileged property

2011-01-20 Thread Alex Ivanoff
Windows 7, UAC is off, user is not an administrator, Windows Installer
sets Privileged and AdminUser properties no 1:

MSI (c) (08:8C) [15:45:57:221]: MSI_LUA: Setting AdminUser property to 1
because this is the client or the user has already permitted elevation
MSI (c) (08:8C) [15:45:57:221]: PROPERTY CHANGE: Adding AdminUser
property. Its value is '1'.
MSI (c) (08:8C) [15:45:57:221]: PROPERTY CHANGE: Adding Privileged
property. Its value is '1'.

How do you explain this?

I just realized that we may using the wrong approach.

We have two installers: InstallerA and InstallerB. InstallerB can only be
installed if InstallerA is installed. So we are using component search to
find one of the components of InstallerA. Should we be using upgrade table
instead?

Re: [WiX-users] Newbie x64 msi question

2010-09-06 Thread Alex Ivanoff
I have a few more questions. We have a 32-bit installer today with all
component ids explicitly specified. We are planning to move to 32/64 bit
installer (mutualy exclusive) with the ability to upgrade current
installations (major upgrade).

1. Should we update explicit component ids to "*"?
2. What is going to happen to upgrade code?
3. Is such scenario even possible? If not, what are our options?

If they are stable how are they generated and where the actual values

Do component GUIDs have to be different?

Subject: Re: [WiX-users] Newbie x64 msi question

Hi,
I have recently made a 64 bit MSI from a single source and I started out
by following
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2007/08/09/4317654.aspx

The trick to make it easy is the -arch command (or setting the processor
type in votive), but you also need to do a few other things.

I conditionally set the product code and product name ...

Set the Platform attribute on the Package Element with the built in
variable...

Platform="$(var.Platform)"

Then I have a conditional root directory structure as programs should be
installed under ProgramFiles64Folder on 64 bit windows...

The rest of the directory structure is based off a so doesn't need to be duplicated.

All components in the MSI have * as the component guid, so the
conditional root folders above mean that the 32 and 64 bit MSIs will
have different component guids.

I also have a launch condition that stops the 32 bit MSI being installed
on 64 bit windows, which it sounds you don't need.

It all seems to be working so far.

Hi Bob,

So, running candle with teh -arch switch does take care of marking the
components at 64 bits, but if using the same Wix source file for the 32
and 64 bits installer with the only difference of the candle -arh
switch, the Components GUIDS for the 64 and 32 bits installer are all
the same. The two installers cannot install in the same box since the
launch conditios are mutually exclusive. Do we still need to have unique
GUIDS per components, I am almost sure we do, but just asking.

Thanks
Andres

Subject: [WiX-users] sharing strings among components

Since using DefineConstants in msbuild appears to be a dead end, maybe someone
can suggest another approach.

Our VS2008 solution can be built for three different products - Standard,
Professional, and Enterprise - depending on a compiler constant sent to each
csproj and wixproj - BG_STANDARD, BG_PROFESSIONAL, and BG_ENTERPRISE
respectively. I can configure this as separate SolutionToBuild with an
appropriate DefineConstants and OutDir in tfsbuild.proj.

I have created a separate wixproj for the installation of each of these.
They all share common components some of which require the string name of the
product in order to create directories, name shortcuts, etc. In the wixproj I
used candle DefineConstants to set "BGProductName=BeamGage Standard" which is
then accessed in the components as $(var.BGProductName). This works fine in
the IDE but fails under msbuild as described in another recent thread.

Any ideas how I can pass these strings from one main component to various other
common components?

Oh well. I went this far:

"Also, Wix 3.0 does not work when installing .NET 4 assemblies to the GAC or
trying to NGEN them, so it might be worth moving to 3.5"

And stopped. Detect .NET 4.0? In Wix 3.5, the net FX extension supplies a
property you can use. See
http://wix.sourceforge.net/manual-wix3/wixnetfxextension.htm

Add the extension and slap this in your wsx:

No, but you can easily code the logic in your installer.

Also, Wix 3.0 does not work when installing .NET 4 assemblies to the GAC or
trying to NGEN them, so it might be worth moving to 3.5

The good thing about ARPINSTALLLOCATION is that you anybody can call
MsiGetProductInfo (,.INSTALLPROPERTY_INSTALLLOCATION..) or equivalent to
get the location.

The bad thing about ARPINSTALLLOCATION is that you have to call
MsiGetProductInfo (,.INSTALLPROPERTY_INSTALLLOCATION..) or equivalent to
get the location.

It can be easier to use a registry item to store the install location
([TARGETDIR] or [INSTALLDIR]) because then you can do an AppSearch for it and
not need to write any code.

What Alex means is you can set the ARPINSTALLLOCATION property
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa367589.aspx) to do that for
you using a type 51 custom action. The following code should work for
you Thomas:

That will (should) set the "InstallLocation" value under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{
YOUR-PRODUCT-GUID}

Good Luck.

If you are setting ARPINSTALLLOCATION with a custom action (type 51 usually),
you might need a condition on it if it's unconditionally setting
ARPINSTALLLOCATION to a value that is not recomputed at patch time. You'd only
set it if "Not Installed".
I've also seen people write a small custom action to get the install location
using the Msi APIs and set the source (TARGETDIR?) when the product is already
installed. Sometimes that's necessary for other custom actions that need to
know the install directory during a patch as well as during a fresh install.

There's no option to find out if the property was set using the command
line. You'll have to handle your defined default value for the property
instead. For example, set the default value of your property PROPERTY_RUNCA
to "Secret". For the custom action, set a condition to
PROPERTY_RUNCA="Secret". Now, if the user sets the property to anything
using the command line, the custom action won't be executed. Except if the
user knows that "Secret" is the only valid value of course :)

Pally,

I, like Alex, have seen the same thing and recently too. As I recall, I
waited several minutes for an installer to "think" before I got bored
and cancelled it. I just put it down to Windows being "awkward" as when
I restarted the installer, the thinking time was either non-existent or
just a couple of seconds and everything then went fine.

Unfortunately at the time, I didn't think to note it as a problem as it
eventually installed correctly. I am not even sure what it was I was
installing!

That means Windows Installer is "thinking". We get it with patches when
you click on the Next button on WelcomeDlg as at that point the Windows
Installer is inventorying the product's currently installed components &
keypaths etc. Not sure what would cause it with an MSI, possibly a large
number of things like RegistrySearch, FileSearch or if you're using the
major upgrade functionality and you currently have an older product
installed which has a large number of files/components/etc.

Nothing to be worried about, just Windows Installer doing it's job
properly & you should just click the return button rather than
cancelling & restarting as it'll likely be no faster.

1. Sometimes it takes more than 10 hours to get back to answering
questions on a volunteer project.

2. The Resources in Components can never overlap. Remember Components
are identified by their Guid and Resources are identified by their
"installation path" (path for files, root/key/name for registry, etc).
In your case, if you change the name of the File below then you *must*
change the Component Guid otherwise the same Component would install two

different files. Likewise, if you change the Guid then you must change
the paths of all of the contained Resources (in this case the File
path).

Hey Alex,

According to Pyro error PYRO0243 (in comments on Peter's blog
http://blogs.msdn.com/pmarcu/archive/2007/06/28/sample-patch.aspx) "
'ComponentX' has a changed keypath. Patches cannot change the keypath of
a
component. " So, if you changed the File Id you would void this. I am
not
sure about changing the actual file name but I think that how we
generate
the 8.3 names (which affect patching) comes from the name of the file
(don't
quote me on that).

Also, it is best not to delete components as mentioned by Peter on the
same
comment area.

Hope that helps,

Not without communicating between deferred CustomActions which is
definitely not recommended unless there is no other option. What I
described below is the way I would expect things to work based on my

Ahh, important bit of information that.

No idea what is picking the new name. If you have a bootstrapper that
might do it. If you downloaded from internet, that might have done it.
If the Windows Installer cached your MSI and then executed it that might

do it. Did you look in the verbose log file to see exactly what package
was being run from where?

There are functions in wcautil.lib that we use to pass data between
deferred CustomActions. It isn't simple to use and should be used only
when absolutely necessary.

[WiX-users] Failed to copy CustomAction log name

I use long descriptive names for my custom actions so I finally got this
error:

Turns out there is a 31 character log name limit in wcautil.cpp, line
28:

static char s_szCustomActionLogName[32];

Why such a limitation?

The checkbox can't be made transparent:
http://www.tramontana.co.hu/wix/lesson8.php#8.6 (see the very bottom of
8.6 paragraph). A quote from there: "The only workaround is to reduce
the width of the checkbox to the actual box itself and to place an
additional static text (these can be made transparent) adjacent to it."
But this limits you to click precisely into the checkbox main area (the
actual box) to turn it on and off.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Unfortunately none of these worked for me :(

I tried running the custom action deferred, impersonate='no' -> no success

Also tried running it as immediate: no success either.

(InstallPrivileges="elevated" in both attempts)

I am beginning to wonder whether the problem arises because the CA is managed.
Those of you, who mentioned that you have working CAs in place, are yours
managed or native? I really don't see any other reason, why these settings work
for you, but don't work for me.

That means that the custom action isn't authored correctly: It must be
both deferred and no-impersonate. Otherwise it runs with user privileges.

Well, deferred doesn't work either. Unfortunately I don't get any details on
the exception that arises (I tried bringing up a message box with that
information, without success). Windows logs won't show me anything other than
"installation failed" either.

A colleague just told me he had similar problems when working with certificates
within a custom action. Same pattern: code needs admin privileges, works fine
when run in an elevated console app but won't work in a custom action.

Does WIX lower the privileges again at some point? Does it maybe use a subset
of permissions of those, that would normally come with admin privileges?

Cheers

Hey Marcus,

Intuition is not a strong suite when working with Windows Installer
Deferred is run under the System context and is elevated. Immediate custom
actions are generally used for setting values in the current MSI context and
passing values to the deferred context and scheduling deferred actions.

Subject: [WiX-users] Bug in version # validation

I'm getting this error:
error LGHT0204: ICE61: Upgrade.VersionMax 7.0.32768.1 format is wrong

According to the doc, the Build component of version numbers can be up
to 65535. I think there's a signed/unsigned problem with the code
validating the VersionMax field. Devs agree? I'll log a bug if so.

2009-03-18 Thread Alex Ivanoff
I have the following code

that results in ICE61

error LGHT0204: ICE61: Upgrade.VersionMax 1.3.40318.0 format is wrong

If I change 1.3.40318.0 to 1.3.32768.0 I still get an error, but if I
change it to 1.3.32767.0 the error goes away. Looks like WiX has a bug
in version parsing (it uses Int16 instead of UInt16).

Look at the CustomAction/@Execute attribute. This should be set to
firstSequence or Immediate. If you have a UI on your installer, I would
use
firstSequence, in which case you will want to schedule the custom action
in
both InstallExecuteSequence and InstallUISequence.

Where to schedule the CA depends on how you intend to use the results.
If
you want to use it to prevent installation, you should schedule it
before
LaunchConditions as an immediate CA and use a Condition element based on
the
property set by the CA.

Well, I didn't say without fault, just interesting. As you say,
Microsoft is free to change the playing field at any time. And they
often do. It'd probably start looking at a CA to accomplish since there
doesn't seem to be a pat method.

It's basically the same as the Vista check (the values in VersionNT and
WindowsBuild are identical to the Server 2008 values in some cases) then
add a check for the value of the MsiNTProductType property. Server 2008
returns 3, Vista returns 1.

Re: [WiX-users] Detecting Server 2008 Core

2009-03-09 Thread Alex Ivanoff
MsiNTProductType only tells whether it is a workstation, server or
domain controller. It does not tell whether it is a Core installation.

It's basically the same as the Vista check (the values in VersionNT and
WindowsBuild are identical to the Server 2008 values in some cases) then
add a check for the value of the MsiNTProductType property. Server 2008
returns 3, Vista returns 1.
