WiX can be built with all no-cost tools and VS supports side-by-side
installation.

That doesn't require UI. As I indicated last year, admin UI dialogs are
rarely requested so nobody's volunteered to do the work.

They don't handle patching very well either. The Welcome Dialog refers
to a Resumed install when running a patch (MSP) and the Progress Dialog
is devoid of all text except the ActionText. Exit Dialog could probably
do with more specific text to Patching too.

Unfortunately the WiX extensions solution is in Visual Studio 2008
format & as we're still using Visual Studio 2005, I can't rebuild
WixUIExtension.dll to test changes even if I wanted to help update them
myself.

it would be nice to be able to use the "msiexec /a" and get the
Administrative install to work.

how would large organisations deploy msi/s if they cannot push it out
via group policy.

Not at present: The admin dialogs aren't in WixUI. We have an open
feature request on it but it comes up once or twice a year, so it hasn't
been high priority.

[WiX-users] Administrative Install and wixui_mondo

2008-07-25 Thread Chris Vigelius
Using Wix V2 successfully for some time now, I came across a problem today
when a customer tried to use administrative install (msiexec /a) mode: As it
seems, this is not really supported by Mondo. What happens is the following:

- msiexec /a myinstaller.msi does nothing

- msiexec /a TARGETDIR=\\some\share does in fact perform an administrative
install to \\some\share, BUT all the UI dialogs (like which features to
install, which folders to use and acceptance of license) are not presented
when performing the admin install, but shown to the end-user instead.

Back in the days when there was no WixUI_Mondo and one had to use a decompiled
uisample.msi, that logic was quite different: All the dialogs were presented
in the administrative install, and the end user just got a MSI which asked no
questions.

Is there any chance to get the behaviour of uisample.msi with Mondo?

thanks in advance,
 chris
