[WiX-users] wix meeting #73 - new logo

2015-07-16 Thread Phill Hogland
Sorry I missed the meeting, but thanks for the blog/web-stream.

My first impression was for #3 red. I did not initially notice the
tri-color, but it is nice.

#2 was striking and caught my attention about as much as #3, but I also
thought it was "big" before I considered the comments of others.

The orange was much less appealing (probably because of being conditioned to
expect red in the context of WiX.

Generally, roadmap stuff is discussed on wix-devs and the WiX Online Meetings
(since most of the drivers of the project show up there).

I see this blog post reports what will happen with 3.10 which anticipates

I remain curious about the intentions for 3.x beyond 3.10 and for 4.0 overall.

And it this case, how could I escape the values by hand?
I was trying to create my own Bootstraper but i cannot use .NET for it since in
production it may not be installed on every machine. Also I downloaded the
source code for wixstdba with the attempt to modify it :D but I didn't get to
far with that.
What would your suggestion be?

I forgot to say what I succeeded to localize. When there is a File element in
the msi package then error message is displayed. If there is no File element at
all, then the light complains that msi package is without any file ("warning
LGHT1079 : The cabinet 'afile.cab' does not contain any files..."), but
uninstall log of such a package does not contain the above mentioned error
message.

Hello all, I'm having trouble with uninstalling my product after I do a minor
upgrade.

So I test with installing my program and then uninstalling the program and that
works fine. Then the next test is install the program (v.1.0.0.x) then do a
minor upgrade (upgrade to v.1.0.2.y). That works fine. Next I try to uninstall
the program. Here's where I run into my problem. The program gets removed from
ARP making it seem like it's uninstalled, however, all directories and files
still exist after the uninstall.

I've compared the logs and the difference I see is when it lists the components
and their states, in the "good" log it says "...Request: Absent;
Action: Absent" signifying a remove. However in the "bad" log it says "
Request: Null, Action: Null" signifying no action.

The Product.wxs contains.

I'm running this from a bundle using wix3.8 and will try to attach the logs.

Any help appreciated!

2015-05-19 Thread Rob Mensching
Always possible. There's a probably a couple 100,000 lines of code in the WiX
toolset. Dropping .pdbs next to the tools and getting the resulting call stack
would narrow it down to which line of code is offending. Plus, knowing which
version of the WiX toolset would help too since the code keeps changing with
each build.

Hi Wix Users

While running a build in FinalBuilder, when it gets up to the Wix installer

This error is supposed to occur when adding or removing items while looping

Not sure there is a work around except to escape the values by hand. Probably a

Hello,

I'm trying to use the Built-in variable WixBundleOriginalSource in order to
send to an executable package the source path from where the bundle originally
ran. This is my code

The problem is that if the source path contains square brackets the content of
them will be deleted. For example lets say that i'm trying to execute the
installer from location "C:/MyTestFolder/Some[Missing]Data/Install.exe". The
WixBundleOriginalSource variable will return to my executable package the
following location "C:/MyTestFolder/SomeData/Install.exe", without the
"[Missing]" text.
Do you have any idea how can I escape the value from this built-in variable?

Thanks,

Custom code could use IBootstrapperEngine::GetVariableString to get the
value of WixBundleOriginalSource, call IBootstrapperEngine::FormatString to
escape it, and then call IBootstrapperEngine::SetVariableString to a custom
variable and use that custom variable in your InstallCommand.

Re: [WiX-users] Wix Built-in Variable escape content

2015-05-14 Thread Tucaliuc Mihai .
Hi,

I have to follow-up on this.
Why is the built-in variable WixBundleOriginalSource not returning the
correct location of the installer. It seems to remove the content of square
brackets from the path. For example lets say that i'm trying to execute the
installer from location "C:/MyTestFolder/Some[Missing]Data/Install.exe".
The WixBundleOriginalSource variable will return the following location
"C:/MyTestFolder/SomeData/Install.exe", without the "[Missing]" text.
I have to specify that I am using the wix standard BA and would like to
avoid having any custom code.

Thanks in advance,
MihaiT

Hi All

My question is simple, how can I give my wix installer a modern ui look and

Re: [WiX-users] Wix Built-in Variable escape content

2015-05-12 Thread Tucaliuc Mihai .
Hello,

Thanks for the quick reply, but I don't think its what I was looking for. I
am not using any custom code for the bootstrapper or UI.
I am using the standard bundle and trying to send (as an argument) to an
executable package the source path from where the bundle originally ran.
The problems appear when that location contains square brackets.

Re: [WiX-users] Wix Built-in Variable escape content

2015-05-12 Thread Phill Hogland
Use Engine.FormatString on the path (in your mba or BAFunctions.dll when
using WixStdBA, probably in the DetectComplete handler).

In mba something like this:
path =
object.Engine.FormatString(object.Engine.StringVariables["WixBundleOriginalSource"])
Then save 'path' to a string variable for use in your ExePackage.

(credit - in a recent post, Bob pointed out Engine.FormatString to me for a
similar reason and it has been very helpful.)

Re: [WiX-users] Wix Built-in Variable escape content

#new_here. Not sure if you received this because of the spam blocker.

Hello,

I'm trying to use the Built-in variable WixBundleOriginalSource in order to
send to an executable package the source path from where the bundle
originally ran. This is my code

The problem is that if the source path contains square brackets the content
of them will be deleted. For example lets say that i'm trying to execute
the installer from location
"C:/MyTestFolder/Some[Missing]Data/Install.exe". The
WixBundleOriginalSource variable will return to my executable package the
following location "C:/MyTestFolder/SomeData/Install.exe", without the
"[Missing]" text.
Do you have any idea how can I escape the value from this built-in variable?

Thanks,

[WiX-users] WiX Burn use UILevel from simple UI

2015-04-21 Thread Marco Tognacci
I need to make a Burn Bootstrapper setup using base wix interface, I have to
customize some conditions using the UILevel. Is there any way to read a property
like UILevel in msi projects?
I can read the level of the UI (Full, None...) using a custom WPF interface and
Burn Engine in c# code, but I'd like to use a simpler interface that one
shipped with base WiX Burn project, but in this way I can't make a condition
based on the UILevel of the Burn exe package, is there any way for doing this?
Is this a bug or future development?
Thanks.

Yes. Both error messages are there in English and Spanish as well.

Error 1313, Error 1314.

Translations are avaliable in Spanish WXL file. But, These errors are not

System error messages are in the system's locale.
Windosw Installer error texts in spanish (and other languages) are in WiX's
UI extension.
Which error are you getting in English?

[WiX-users] Wix preprocessor extension: multiple prefixes

2015-04-14 Thread Samer Vazdekis
Shouldn't I be able to create multiple prefixes when defining a Wix
preprocessor extension, see link below.

 private static string[] prefixes = { "sample1", "sample2" };
This is not working for me and keep getting "Undefined preprocessor function"
error!

I also get two errors in the Internal Consistency Evaluator part that I
don't have the slightest idea how to fix:

ICE20ERROR Exit dialog/action not found in 'AdminUISequence'
Sequence Table.
ICE68ERROR Invalid custom action type for action
'SetCertificatePath'.

There's nothing called AdminUISequence anywhere in the solution. About the
SetCertificatePath, here are all mentions to it:

RBF Files -- Rollback Files. These should be deleted after a successful
upgrade. This should take place automatically without any special authoring.
Are you running your certification tool while the installer is still active?

The temporary directory entries are for each custom action. Never seen any vgx
or wbk files in them--what sort of custom actions are you running?

They crypto key entry is part of a Microsoft hardening process attempting to
restrict repairs and patching to authorized users. It has nothing to do with
your authoring.

The entry in the cache tree is to support patching without having the source in
the install location--should that become necessary. It is highly desirable and
should be left alone.

Likewise, the registry key action appears related to the recent crypto changes
or to normal Windows Installer Service behavior.

I have certified one product at our company which uses the WiX installer
without issue, although it wasn't installing a service, just a program.

Could you also post your Product.wxs and any related files? Also, are you
doinga x86 or x64 build? Our product was build as x86 and certified on a
Windows 8.1 x64 machine.

One caveat with the certification tool is that I could not get it to run on a
Virtual Machine and complete successfully. Have you tried doing the
certification on a different machine and/or different Windows version?

Re: [WiX-users] [WIX]: How to display UAC prompt as much early as possible

2015-04-06 Thread Phil Wilson
Do the install with a verbose log and look for the elevation entries
that will say something like "MSI_LUA: Elevation required to install
product, will prompt for credentials". See what's going on before
that. In an MSI the elevation prompts appear at the start of the
execute sequence (you don't get to choose when they appear) and
there's no reason for those custom actions to be relevant, but but
there could be something slow going on at the end of your UI sequence
- are there any CAs there?

Elevation is a result of IntallScope set to perMachine or
InstallPrivileges being elevated - you get the elevation shield
because of those settings, but tthe shield isn't what causes
elevation. It's a consequence of a button control that has the
ElevationShield attribute set telling you the elevation will occur.

[WiX-users] [WIX]: How to display UAC prompt as much early as possible

2015-04-06 Thread Dileep S
Hi All,

I have created MSI with two dialogs.
1) InstallDirDlg.wxs
2) ProgressDlg.wxs

Enable the Elevation shield property set as 'yes' for 'Next' button in
'InstallDirDlg.wxs' dialog.

UAC prompt displayed after some time (i.e, approximately 1 minute).

Is there any way to get the UAC prompt less than 5 sec.

I have used following custom actions in Execute sequence,

  NOT REMOVE ~=
"ALL"
  REMOVE =
"ALL"

Can anyone help me to solve this.

Thanks in advance.

[WiX-users] [WIX]:How to reset the INSTALLDIR path by changing the path using 'Change' button

2015-04-06 Thread Dileep S
Hi All,

I created an MSI with two dialogs.
1. InstallDirdlg.wxs
2. ProgressDlg.wxs

In *.wxs file i have used some custom actions to install the files.

In InstallExecuteSequence,

  NOT REMOVE ~=
"ALL"
  REMOVE =
"ALL"

using the above custom actions, I was able to run MSI package for multiple
times.

So, first time i ran the MSI package and then installed on the selected
location using 'Change' button in 'InstallDirDlg.wxs'. (Ex: C:\Program
Files\MyAPP)
Next time when i ran the MSI package, it was copying in the same location
even i changed the path to another location.
(Ex: D:\Sample\MyApp)

I have set the property as shown below:

Also,
 (hard coded this path)

In Dialog.wxs,

1

Can anyone help me how to reset the INSTALLDIR path by changing the path
using 'Change' button.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [WiX-users] [WIX]: How to extract the files in selected folder using MSI dialog.

2015-04-03 Thread John Cooper
How is WIXUI_INSTALLDIR used in your custom dialog? How does this dialog
compare with the InstallDirDlg in WixUI_InstallDir? If there are differences,
why are they different?

Indirect property references are used to get INSTALLDIR updated out of the UI.
It appears this is broken in your case. WIXUI_INSTALLDIR is correctly set to
INSTALLDIR, but the update is not occurring in the dialog or the surrounding
scheduling.

They've been stripped off. You'll need to put them up at a location accessible
by URL.

Re: [WiX-users] WiX Burn how to suspend and restart setup

2015-03-30 Thread Sean Hall
The engine won't do anything while calling OnResolveSource. Don't return
from ResolveSource until you have located the package. If you don't want
the UI thread to be the same thread that handles BA calls, then create a
new thread for running your UI. That will probably require nontrivial
changes to your existing code.

Re: [WiX-users] Wix bootstrapper only works on .net 4.5

2015-03-30 Thread Sean Hall
Make sure that the config file is named as BootstrapperCore.config by
setting the Payload/@Name attribute.

For the .NET 2 problem, the order matters for the supportedRuntime elements
in the startup element in BootstrapperCore.config. The .NET 2 line
probably should have been first.

For the .NET 4.x problem, you should look at the Application Event log to
see why your BA is crashing. Also, turn on Fusion logging to check for DLL
loading problems -

Re: [WiX-users] Wix bootstrapper only works on .net 4.5

2015-03-30 Thread John Cooper
It will run the 4.x that is installed. 4.6 will be a superset of 4.5.2 which
is a superset of 4.5.1 which is a superset of 4.5 which is a superset of 4.0.
When you have one of these installed, all the earlier versions are superseded
and replaced.

[WiX-users] WiX Burn how to suspend and restart setup

2015-03-30 Thread Marco Tognacci
I have a Burn setup with custom WPF UI deployed using 2 DVD.I need to
implemente search location for a component or payload, I have made the code
inside the event ResolveSource, setting the new LocalSource and setting the
result in the EventArgs to Retry, but in this way I only can do all the work
using a modal dialog as I need to set the Result=Retry after selecion of the
new path of the component.I'd like to suspend the setup inside the callback
attached to the event ResolveSource then using the normal WPF interface of my
setup, not a modal dialog, I want to report notification to the user and let
the user change the path for locate the component, and then continue with the
setup.
Is there a way for doing this? I have tried to set the Result=Suspend inside
the ResolveSource event but the setup report and error and stop.
Thanks.

NETFX v4.5 is an in place upgrade of v4.0. If you have v4.5 you no longer have

You may need to set useLegacyV2RuntimeActiviationPolicy to false. From the
comments to the default config for C# custom actions:

In order to enable .NET Framework version 2.0 runtime activation policy, which
is to load all assemblies
by using the latest supported runtime,
@useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true".

This is not something I have tested as all of my bootstrappers are targeted at
.NET 4.5.

Bootstrapper Prerequisite does not equal Product Prerequisite. If you're using
a managed bootstrapper (such as the WiX installer), it has its own .NET
requirements. If you have a custom bootstrapper written to .NET 3.5, then it's
a bug that you hadn't modified the prerequisite of the bootstrapper (but I
rather doubt this is the case).

In any case, .NET 3.5 will create increasingly unpleasant users experiences for
your product. Because it uses the 2.0 CLR, it means mounds of .NET 2.0 also
need to be installed. And on Windows 8 Core and above, it's not installed by
default and requires a feature install--at least on server OS's.

Re: [WiX-users] WIX force GUI on uninstall

2015-03-27 Thread Nir Bar
You'll need to rewrite the MSI UI for the bundle.
A starting point should be:
http://wixtoolset.org/documentation/manual/v3/bundle/

If the built-in UI's are not good for you you'll need to author a theme
  .

Of course you can start from one of the existing themes in WiX Standard BAs
- in WiX source code hierarchy src\ext\BalExtension\wixstdba\Resources

Another option is developing a WPF bundle application. You can use WiX's own
setup as a starting point (in WiX source src\Setup\WixBA)

[WiX-users] WiX Burn ResolveSource event and SetLocalPath(newPath) not working

2015-03-27 Thread Marco Tognacci
I have a WiX Burn Mamaged Bootstrapper with WPF UI.I need to locate the msi
package included in the exe in another location, (I need to deploy my setup on
2 dvd).I have attached to the ResolveSource event (or overriding the method
OnResolveSource) that report in the LocalPath the path of the package that it
can't be located (because is on the second dvd) and inside it I have called the
SetLocalPath() to the new path on the second DVD and set the EventArgs.Result =
OK or Continue but it report the failure of the setup, then I can call
RetryCommand so the setup work and use the new LocalPath but it rollback the
setup and restart all.As I have more that one package to relocate is there a
way to make the setup continue after the ResolveSource - SetLocalPath()
?Perhaps I need to set another option as Result for the ResolveSource event?Or
What I have to do for make it working? Thanks.

Re: [WiX-users] Wix bootstrapper only works on .net 4.5

2015-03-27 Thread John Cooper

[WiX-users] wix bundle installation

2015-03-26 Thread Marco Tangl
Hello!

My problem:
When I execute my bundle installer.exe, which fits several msi packages
(applications & drivers), a second installer dialog is opened
additionally at the end of the installation (First installation dialog is still
open).
This only happens on Windows 7 x86 systems and not on x64 systems.
I also figured out, that it comes from a driver msi package, but I don't know
why.
After a web research I found the following [Nov. 07. 2013]:
1. Burn adds a RunOnce entry automatically every time it starts, and it removes
it when it ends if no reboot has been requested by any of the packages.
2. The driver installation either uses an InstallFromHinfSection or calls
DIF_INSTALLDEVICE, either directly or indirectly.
3. Windows processes all of the RunOnce entries before Burn has exited/removed
its RunOnce entry.
Is this still an issue, or already fixed??

driver.wxs snippet: (makes the problem in bundle installation .. single msi

How can I force GUI on Uninstall from Control Panel?I want that when I click

I have to tell that only Uninstall option is available in Add/Remove programs.

But, second time installation, i have changed the folder to extract.
This time, it was not showing any UAC prompt and then not extracted the
files in selected folder.

How to extract the files in selected folder using MSI dialog.

Please any suggestions.

[WiX-users] Wix Burn with Managed WPF UI - How to deploy on multiple disks

2015-03-17 Thread Marco Tognacci
I have a Burn Managed Bootstrapper with WPF UI.I need to publish my setup using
a DVD disk.I have many msi packages in the Burn chain, so I want to divide my
setup application on 2 or more DVD disks.I have seen the MediaTemplate element
inside the msi package project to define the disk for the output msi.
I don't need to separate the single msi packages, but only the bootstrapper, so
my question is:Is there a way to the Burn to take the msi packages from
different locations?
I'd like to insert the first DVD, run the Burn setup and only if I need to
install a msi package that is located on the second disk the setup would ask
the user to insert the second DVD disk, how can I do this?
Thanks.

checking the MSIINSTALLPERUSER property and not the ALLUSERS one.

Subject: [WiX-users] (WiX) Write product info to registry for dual purpose
installer

Hello,

I'm making a dual purpose package in WiX according to this
article<https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd408068(v=vs.85).aspx>.

When I initialize my Installer with MSIINSTALLPERUSER="1", the product
information is always written to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, even when I set
MSIINSTALLPERUSER="" in my dialog.

I expected that WiX or msi noticed that I changed to a per-machine installation
and would write the product information to HKCU or HKLM accordingly.

How do I write the product info to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE if the user chose the
per-machine installation?
Best regards,
Jérôme Egger

[WiX-users] WiX 3.9 R2 NuGet package

2015-03-04 Thread Tunney, Stephen
Hey everyone,

Trying to use the NuGet package for our next product release that is upgrading
us from 3.7 to 3.9 R2. I have the nuget package installing for the solution
but this seems to have a chicken/egg problem.

I don't have WiX installed on the machine. Therefore the wixproj projects
aren't recognized by Visual Studio 2013. Since the projects aren't recognized
I can't manage packages for them. Since I can't manage packages I can't add
the WiX nuget package. :( Round and round we go.

Does anyone have any insights into this? I would LOVE to be able to use the
package and remove the headache of maintaining the installation state of my
build farm for at least one more thing.

Thoughts?

Re: [WiX-users] WiX Burn Command Line Options

2015-03-02 Thread Sean Hall
They aren't exactly there, Burn strips off the parts of the command line
that it recognizes so the Command doesn't have "/s" it has "Display.None"
which has other aliases.

Marco, are you asking for the ability to get /h or /s? Or are you using
those as examples of Burn automatically handling command line parameters?
If they're just examples and you want builtin support for the managed
BootstrapperApplication class to automatically parse the variables from the
command line and set them, then file a feature request at
http://wixtoolset.org/issues.

details the switches (without digging in the source). Your mba can use the
Command object (Command.Display) to determine if Burn detected -quiet mode.
I added methods to my mba to parse the command line for my custom switches
and create localized help strings to display when Command.Action ==
LaunchAction.Help.

[WiX-users] WiX Burn Command Line Options

2015-03-02 Thread Marco Tognacci
I have a Burn setup package, using a custom WPF interface.I need to pass some
arguments using command line:
For example I want to set to 10 the value for the variable option and run the
setup in silent mode. The /s option is processed by Burn system, but not the
variable, I need to parse the command line by myself inside the Burn
application. Is there a way for precessing it by the Burn Engine? Is there a
best practice for doing this?
myinstaller.exe /S option=10
I want even report in the help page all the command lines arguments supported
for my Setup application. Is there a list or a translated document or string to
describe the base command line arguments that are processed by the Burn Engine?
Thanks

Isn't there going to be an issue with any custom action DLLs? I'm pretty
sure the Wix DLLs are not 98 compatible.

You would only need the redistributable if you were targeting an older

[WiX-users] [WIX]: Support MSI package on Windows 98/ME

2015-02-26 Thread Dileep S
Dear All,

I have created sample MSI package using WIX 3.7.

It was working fine on Windows XP and above OS.
If i ran this MSI package on Windows 98/ME OS, it was displaying an error:
"This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application
vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

Please let me know any suggestions to resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance.

But in this case why there is the option in the Burn Bundle project?Even if it
doesn't works?

ARP decided that only MSIs get a "Repair" button. Definitely a bug. Can you
file it against Windows?
