His 1,097th ORIGINAL essay? How many of the others did he crib from Mike
Royko?

Andy Rooney to step down from his "60 Minutes" role

Andy Rooney will announce on this Sunday's "60 Minutes" that it will be
his last regular appearance on the broadcast. Rooney, 92, has been
featured on "60 Minutes" since 1978.

He will make the announcement in his regular essay at the end of the
program, his 1097th original essay for "60 Minutes". It will be preceded
by a segment in which Rooney looks back on his career in an interview with
Morley Safer.

I'm wondering where 60 Minutes is going to find someone else who has
too many free pens which won't write and which he can't bring himself to throw
away at whom they can point a camera for 115 seconds each week.

The obvious choice would be to hire WNN alumnus Ian Shoales (aka Merle
Kessler) who would deliver similar-sounding, but far more entertaining,
rants.

Or... Dr. Becker, aka Sam Malone. But he's a bit busy these days
with two other tv series.

What a bargain! Ian would get twice as many words in the same time.
