[wpkg-users] Odd behaiour with WPKG client 1.3.14 and one package
I have a package to deploy 7zip to my machines. I have *one* machine that is not taking it. My package has only one check condition: The 920-2.exe refers to a file which does a check on OS (32v64) and then installs the appropriate OS version. Both the 64 and 32 bit versions share the same registry key and data so that's not an issue. I'm sure the registry key is there on the problem machine from the install completing - Here's a trimmed down export from the registry on the problem machine: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{23170F69-40C1-2701-0920-0100}] "DisplayVersion"="9.20.00.0" For some reason the WPKG client on this problem machine sees it needs the package, installs it, then comes back and says the checks failed post-install. I've even gone in and deleted the existing %windir%\system32\wpkg.xml and let it be recreated, manually removed the software, etc, etc. but the machine continues to says it needs this package. Anybody have any ideas? Kind regards, Bill Prentice K.T.J.R. I am trying to utilize these two programs together to provide updates to our public access computers. I tried to use a custom script in SteadyState to call WPKG but it does not run as a credentialed user (SteadyState runs the custom script before Windows logon). I have now tried installing the client, setting the service to run manually and starting the service manually through the custom script. This solution will work if I institute a logon delay but this causes the full delay anytime Windows restarts. One thing mentioned in the thread above is to force SteadyState to commit the changes post execution of WPKG. This seems a little more involved than calling WPKG through SteadyState. Has anyone out there successfully combined WPKG with the SteadyState disk protection? I can help with the first: Extract the setup files from the downloaded executable. In the nonlocalized\defaults\pref folder you will find a firefox.js. That explains it - The messenger service is disabled by default since XP SP2 and all my clients are either XP SP3 or 2003 SP2. To disable this use the /nonotify switch or set the "nonotify" parameter to "true" in config.xml. Maybe your WPKG client installations suppress the notifications using the /nonotify command. Note: For this to work Windows needs to run the "Messenger" service (except on Vista/7 where msg.exe is used instead of "net send"). br, Rainer - wpkg-users mailing list archives >> http://lists.wpkg.org/pipermail/wpkg-users/ ___ wpkg-users mailing list wpkg-users@lists.wpkg.org http://lists.wpkg.org/mailman/listinfo/wpkg-users

Re: [wpkg-users] Periodical wpkg script execution from wprg client
I can suggest the following : a scheduled task running from a server such as a domain controller. This task could run something against each machine in the domain to restart the service. When I am trying to get one machine to restart (such a my test deployment machine) I use a powershell script. Here is the code: param([string]$machine = "machine", [string]$service = "service") (Get-WmiObject Win32_Service -computer $machine -Filter "name = '$service'").stopservice() Start-Sleep –s 10 (Get-WmiObject Win32_Service -computer $machine -Filter "name = '$service'").startservice() Line 1 supplies the variable declarations. Line 2 stops the indicated service on the indicated machine. Line 3 waits 10 seconds for the service to definitely stop. Line 4 starts the service again. If you save the code as foo.ps1 you can remotely cycle the WPKG service from another machine by issuing the command: PS prompt:> ./foo.ps1 -machine "remotePC" -service "WPKGservice" Kind regards, Bill Prentice K.T.J.R. Re: [wpkg-users] Will WPKG uninstall software it did not install?
If the software has something that can be checked install checks are written properly you can have a minimum version or something similar. In my environment I want specific versions installed so as to be able to properly support my environment so I specify exact version information as much as possible. On the same note it is possible for WPKG to be used to remove software it didn't install but I have found it is somewhat non-obvious and difficult. I've done this on machines where I had only remote access and didn't want to give the user local admin. Here's how I've done it: NOTES : 1] You must do this per machine. 2] You must have access to the local machine's c:\windows\system32\wpkg.xml 3] You need the uninstall command for the software in question. Define a package for the software to be removed and add it to the specific host's profile. In my case I was downgrading some people from Visio Pro to Visio Std. Do not do install checks (you already know the software's there or else why would you be removing it???). Here's the removal package for Visio 2003 Pro I made: Restart WPKG Service. Wait for it to finish processing the package (can be confirmed via application event log). Stop the WPKG Service and delete the wpkg.xml file on the client. Remove the package from the host profile of the client PC and start the client's WPKG Service back up. Kind regards, Bill Prentice K.T.J.R. Just due to the fact that the user did not know about any effect of its acting. Re: [wpkg-users] Swift disable of WPKG-Service
Here's a short script I use to cycle the service on domain member machines using PowerShell: param([string]$machine = "machine", [string]$service = "service") (Get-WmiObject Win32_Service -computer $machine -Filter "name = '$service'").stopservice() Start-Sleep -s 10 (Get-WmiObject Win32_Service -computer $machine -Filter "name = '$service'").startservice() Usage: PS c:>./remotecycleservice.ps1 -machine "targetpc" -service "targetservice" Example: PS c:>./remotecycleservice.ps1 -machine "Bob" -service "wpkgservice" You can obviously change this so you only have the stop, can do multiple lines using real machine names instead of variable names, etc. And obviously the ID your script runs under must have admin rights to the PCs. I also have another script which I use to patch a set of servers which have to be shut down in a specific order and brought back up in the reverse of that order. By using the following line: (Get-WmiObject Win32_Service -computer targetPC -Filter "caption = 'name_as_shown_in_services.msc'").changestartmode("disabled") Example : (Get-WmiObject Win32_Service -computer Bob -Filter "caption = 'WPKG Service'").changestartmode("disabled") I disable the service. The only catch is that the service name must be unambiguous. In other words, if you have service1 and service12 PowerShell will fail as PowerShell can't tell the difference between the two (but service1 and service-1 are unique enough for PowerShell to work) Kind regards, Bill Prentice -Original Message- From: wpkg-users-boun...@lists.wpkg.org [mailto:wpkg-users-boun...@lists.wpkg.org] On Behalf Of Ingemar Forsmark Sent: Friday, 08 January, 2010 07:24 To: Ingemar Forsmark; Tomasz Chmielewski Cc: wpkg-users@lists.wpkg.org Subject: Re: [wpkg-users] Swift disable of WPKG-Service Now i´m getting somewhere.. [wpkg-users] Deploy packages to non-domain members not working
Perhaps it's already been answered, and it's only related to WPKG, but my Google-fu is weak today. I have 4 machines that are not domain members and I want to use WPKG to deploy packages to them. My package share is set both share and NTFS permissions with Everyone-Read/Execute. WPKG checks in no problem and gets the list of packages (because I supplied it with credentials for a domain service account) but when it tries to run a package it comes back with an error (which varies depending on what the software is - 1619 in the case of an MSI). Essentially what is happening is my 2003r2 package-hosting domain-member server is asking for a user ID and password to access the share even with Everyone set on it. As near as I can figure WPKG is using the domain credentials to access the package and profile XMLs but is using the machine for getting the actual package installer. Has anyone found a work-around or solution for this scenario? Making these machines domain members is not an option at this point. What I have done is set up two different profiles with normally identical contents. One profile is for production machines and one is for my test machine. Re: [wpkg-users] Having difficulty with PSPad silent install on WPKG
Uninstall is unfortunately not the issue - the issue is that running the install via WPKG does not put the desktop and quick launch icons out the way running the same command via the workstation does. I.E. : pspad454inst_en.exe /SILENT /loadinf="\\server\Packages\Custom\PSPad 4.5.4.2365\pspad454.inf" -or- pspad454inst_en.exe /SILENT /TASKS=multiuser,icons,contextmenu works fine via the command line on a PC (software installs, add/remove programs entry created, desktop icon, quick launch icon, program group). But running that same command via WPKG gets everything BUT the desktop and quick launch icons. It's almost as if when it tries to place the files in All Users (like it does when installed manually) and can't Kind regards, Bill Prentice -Original Message- From: wpkg-users-boun...@lists.wpkg.org [mailto:wpkg-users-boun...@lists.wpkg.org] On Behalf Of Pendl Stefan Sent: Tuesday, 01 December, 2009 11:33 To: wpkg-users@lists.wpkg.org Subject: Re: [wpkg-users] Having difficulty with PSPad silent install on WPKG > > Using the latest on both. [wpkg-users] Having difficulty with PSPad silent install on WPKG
Using the latest on both. The install does execute via WPKG but the problem is that the desktop icon and the quick launch icon are not created. Running the exact same comment from an admin user on the machine correctly installs everything. As this is an Inno Setup installer I have tried using the documented /TASKS and /MERGETASKS switches plus also tried using the /LOADINF switch. The package does install - just without the desktop and quick launch icons when run through wpkg. Anybody have any ideas? I'm not sure if this is a WPKG/Inno issue or solely an Inno issue Kind regards, Bill Prentice <>- wpkg-users mailing list archives >> http://lists.wpkg.org/pipermail/wpkg-users/ ___ wpkg-users mailing list wpkg-users@lists.wpkg.org http://lists.wpkg.org/mailman/listinfo/wpkg-users
