 This is a message for Marco who mailed back in May about Truecrypt. I’ve
 cracked a silent installer for TrueCrypt 7.0a and posted instructions on the
 wpkg.org site which should be approved soon.

Unpacking and installing the program by hand, creating the service and
so on, work flawlessy.

There's no trouble at all to install TrueCrypt by WPKG, the real
trouble arise from updating it via WPKG if the box have ''on the fly''
disk encryption...

I've done some tests, and every time i got an unbootable box.
Ok, i can use the rescue CD to decrypt and then reencrypt the disk, but
it takes roughly two days of work, not feasable on a production
environment...

Oh, I didn't know that there is anything to crack there...

The key is that TrueCrypt needs the truecrypt service to be installed in order
to run without admin rights. It's also required to have a probper Uninstall
entry.

All this information can be simply inserted using a shell cmd wrapper.
You might download my TrueCrypt package from Rapidshare. I've updated it to TC
7.0a as well and it's easily adaptable to new versions:

2010-05-13 Thread Rainer Meier
Hi Marco,

On 13.05.2010 10:00, Marco Gaiarin wrote:

 I need to deploy TrueCrypt, and this seems a non-trivial task...

I was installing TrueCrypt via WPKG too and found just a few glitches:
- Installer has no silent mode
- Installing manually (extract and copy to %ProgramFiles%) does not install the
  truecrypt service which is required for non-admins to use TrueCrypt
- Even adding the service manually lets TrueCrypt trigger an UAC prompt on
  Vista/7 if installed manually

After some investigation I found that The TrueCrypt binary (TrueCrypt.exe) seems
to call itself with /UAC parameter which triggers an UAC prompt if it does not
find the uninstall entries. Even if the service is installed properly. Quite
silly but not really a problem to work-around. I wrote a small batch script
which adds the service and fakes the uninstall entry. This is working perfectly
and does not trigger any UAC prompt.

I have uploaded my package to RapidShare for reference:
http://rapidshare.com/files/386802277/TrueCrypt_v.6.3a.zip.html
MD5: 1DCBE2A58EF3AB06D8401C0A043419D6

How to use it:
The archive already contains a sample WPKG package XML (TrueCrypt.xml). The
package is configured to run unattended.cmd.

unattended.cmd performs the following tasks:
- Extract TrueCrypt.exe to %ProgramFiles%\TrueCrypt
- Adds truecrypt service and installs system driver
- Adds uninstall entry

After this you might even uninstall TrueCrypt via control panel.

If you need to update TrueCrypt this is pretty simple to do:
- Download TrueCrypt from the web page
- Run the installer and select to extract the binaries
Now you get a sub-Folder called TrueCrypt which contains all which needs to be
installed in %ProgramFiles%. To illustrate it I just left this folder in the
package above.
- Use 7-Zip (http://7-zip.org/) to create a self-extracting archive from the
  TrueCrypt sub folder.
  - Just rigt-click the TrueCrypt subfolder, select 7-Zip = Add to Archive...
  - Select 7z archive format and enable Create SFX archive option
  - Click OK and 7-Zip creates a nice TrueCrypt.exe archive
- You might want to update the VERSION variable in unattended.cmd too.
done.

So the only thing you need to do for updates is to create a new Self-Extract
archive and update the version in unattended.cmd header.

 Hello,

 I realize this message I am replying to was rather old...

 My investigations showed you can't rely on the .exe file to do the
 installation automatically. Rather you have to install the device driver
 by hand.

 If you are still interested, let me know, and I can dig up references

The one issue I have noticed is the sc delete command sometimes fails to
delete the service without a reboot, which means the remainder commands
will fail because the truecrypt.sys file is still in use. At least wpkg
should still detect it as being installed and do the right thing on the
next run.

I haven't tried to make sure that Perl is installed, you could argue
this is required, because it calls shortcut.pl (copied from unattended).

I guess my number one concern with this approach is that it might cause
some confusion if the computer already has truecrypt installed, via the
upstream installer. Especially if there are any differences in path

Hi,

  Unattend has some nice little scripts for this

  shortcut.pl
 Also requires Perl to be installed.
That isn't really a problem. Every package that uses shortcut.pl depends on the
activeperl package and every client that is installed with unattended has
activeperl installer already anyway.

Might be simpler just to use the script I posted that will add the

I've done it both ways, using shortcut.exe
This was in a batch file that was copied in a wpkg package to the all users

but sometimes it is easier to just create a shortcut yourself and then use wpkg

Brian,

http://forums.truecrypt.org/viewtopic.php?t=13453postdays=0postorder=a

The problem is normal users (non-admins) cannot use truecrypt as it
tries to install a truecrypt device when you run the program. I
overcame this by editing the registry to change the truecrypt service
start level to 0 (at system startup). This means it is already running
so users can already use it.

I created an msi which puts files in the right place and the custom
registry settings.  Works a treat.

Hello,

Have had another go at getting this working, based on instructions at
http://forums.truecrypt.org/viewtopic.php?p=11726#11726.

First run the installer, and select the unpack option to unpack the
files. I put them in %SOFTWARE%\truecrypt\%VERSION%

hq packages # cat truecrypt.xml
packages
package id=truecrypt
  name=Truecrypt 6.1a
  revision=1
  reboot=false
  priority=0
install cmd='%SOFTWARE%\truecrypt\install.cmd 6.1a' /
upgrade cmd='%SOFTWARE%\truecrypt\install.cmd 6.1a' /
remove cmd='%SOFTWARE%\truecrypt\remove.cmd 6.1a' /
/package
/packages

hq truecrypt # cat install.cmd
%SystemRoot%\System32\sc.exe stop truecrypt
copy %SOFTWARE%\truecrypt\%1\truecrypt.sys
%SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers
%SystemRoot%\System32\sc.exe create truecrypt type= kernel start= auto

error= normal binPath= %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers\truecrypt.sys
DisplayName= truecrypt
%SystemRoot%\System32\sc.exe start truecrypt
xcopy /E /I /Y %SOFTWARE%\truecrypt\%1 %ProgramFiles%\truecrypt

hq truecrypt # cat remove.cmd
%SystemRoot%\System32\sc.exe delete truecrypt
del %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers\truecrypt.sys
rmdir /S /Q %ProgramFiles%\truecrypt

Issues:

* Not sure how to create shortcuts for the start menu.
* The above may not work for 64bit installations. There is a supplied
truecrypt-x64.sys, maybe this is meant to be used instead of
truecrypt.sys - if so I wouldn't know how to tell wpkg to use it
instead.
* The first line in the install script stops the service (maybe this
should delete the service?) in case it is already running so it can be
reinstalled. Not absolutely happy with this.
* The SC create command line looks weird with lots of spaces but these
are required.

Comments?

 You can run Truecrypt from any directory after its extracted, its fully

 The executable has command line options

That is known as Traveller mode.

Unfortunately this will only work if the user is logged in as
administrator, and we want to try and restrict this. That means
truecrypt must be fully installed.
