[WSG]Can any JavaScript/DOM gurus help?

2003-09-30 Thread Ben Boyle
I've not had time to review the script in question. But since the topic has
come up, I have a drop-down menu in development that might be useful, for
comparitive purposes if nothing else. I know there are still bugs with the
stylesheet to track down in various browsers.
http://inspire.server101.com/js/mb/mb.html

Expanding menu is a bit more robust:
http://inspire.server101.com/js/xc/
as are the tabbed panels ...
http://inspire.server101.com/js/tp/

Enjoy :)

ps: if anyone spots bugs let me know.

cheers
Ben

RE: [WSG]Can any JavaScript/DOM gurus help?

2003-09-30 Thread David McDonald
Ben,

Thanks for the heads up. As I'm under time constraints, I've had to resort
to using an HTML 4.01 doctype, which isn't the ultimate solution, but puts
Mozilla etc into quirks mode which works.

I see now that using indented lists is certainly a good solution for cross
browser drop downs - I need to look at that further.

[WSG]WSG "Digest mode"

2003-09-30 Thread russ weakley
Did you know that instead of getting lots of individual WSG emails, you can
change your settings to "Digest mode"?

This means you will get one email every day from the WSG mail list, with all
the day's WSG messages included within the one email.

To set your membership to "digest mode" simply email
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and in the body of the email (subject
irrelevant) put the following words:
Set mode digest wsg

Hi Russ,

The problem that I find with digest mode on any mailing list is that by the
time you get the emails the dicussion is over. I don't think it makes the
list as interactive but there definitely is a use for it for the

Hi David

Why would using a 4.01 doctype put Mozilla into quirks mode? As long as the
doctype is correct Moz should go into standards mode.

Haven't really been following this discussion but you may want to check out
the CUE templates. They seem to have a pretty nice drop down nav thats
public domain.

The link is under Web Standards in the resources section of the WSG site.
Once you get to the CUE site - look for templates.

You can try the Code Style Font Sampler:
http://www.codestyle.org/css/font-family/index.shtml

'Standard' is a funny term for fonts, too, as things like Office & IE
install heaps of additional fonts.

RE: [WSG]Font support chart?

2003-09-30 Thread Mark Stanton
Thanks Lindsay

I compiled this list into a bit of a chart & averaged the support across
browsers. No fancy weightings have been added just win + mac + *nix / 3.
Also no account was given to font families, just unique font names.

The fonts that came out with more than 70% support are:

Arial 90.30%
Courier New 89.20%
Times New Roman 80.13%
Arial Black 79.57%
Verdana 79.45%
Comic Sans MS 77.81%
Trebuchet MS74.88%
Impact 73.90%
Georgia 71.58%

After this it drops off pretty quickly to 30% and below. The full list is
attached.

Re: [WSG]Font support chart?

2003-09-30 Thread russ weakley
Mark, These is handy figures!

Regardless of the figures, font family cascading is still important. Always
specify the font you want first, then (possibly) an option, and finally a
generic font family (serif, sans-serif, monospace, cursive, fantasy).

For example:
{ font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; }
{ font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; }

This means that if a user doesn¹t have the desired font, they will either
get a secondary font or at least a similar generic font.

Also note that font families with multiple words must be enclosed within
quotes.

Sorry for the lecture, everyone : (
