You could always open the page in word document and if everything looks
fine there it will look fine in outlook 2007 since its using MS Word to
render!

Re: [WSG] Request possible?

2007-11-07 Thread Michael Vogt
Hello Geork.

  - is there a way that only 2 lines of text are allowed above the
small box? The other text should flow automatically around the box.

With a spacer-float, yes. See example...

 http://www.gunlaug.no/tos/alien/mv/test_07_1106.html

Yes, this is it. Absolutely great. Thanks a lot.

IE/win (all versions) need help though, as it mixes up the calculations.
Most of IE's problems can be avoided by reorganizing where the
margins/paddings go in the layout as a whole.

Also, the line-up won't be reliable using fixed dimensions, pixels,
since there isn't such a thing as fixed font-sizes/line-heights in web
design. Thus, you'll have to modify dimensions to work with relative
font-sizes/line-heights if you want to avoid all sorts of breaking and
overlapping when such a request gets subjected to the slightest amount
 of stress across browser-land.

 Otherwise: no problem.

Yes, works great so far in the editor we use here.

Cheers,
Michael Vogt

Re: [WSG] Request possible?

2007-11-07 Thread Michael Vogt
Hello Dave.

(Sorry for the late reply. somehow Gmail did not list this thread in the inbox)

Thank you for your great suggestions. I am sorry that I was not
clearer about the usage of this template.

In reallity, I deliver only the HTML inside the div.part4, which in
turn wil be made available to editors through an edit interface inside
a CMS. So yes, the editor has another template to add h1 and h2 to the
complete interface. I think, I might need the div.part4 to set correct
margins above and below the template.

I presume this is part of a page and is just to demonstrate the layout
but there are other issues like no doctype or character set and the
your using a heading 3 without 1 or 2 present but I presume this would
be corrected in the final page?

Yes, I hope so. I don't even know the person who binds the complete
site together.

Obviously this would also include the
inline style that you have for the margin on the body.

Agreed.

Also you're declaring font-size in pixels but you need to use either
em or a percentage value if you want the page to be accessible.

Yes, I agree. But I do have problems to push this through the powers
that decide what gets to be done. I have a styleguide from a large
design agency in germany. At the beginning of this sheet they write
that they want the fonts set in pixels... pitty.

You might find this useful to convert your sizes
 http://www.dave-woods.co.uk/?p=79

Yes, thanks.

Other than that though, it's a relatively simple layout so should only
really need a few div containers and then the relevant heading's
applied along with paragraphs of text.

 Hope that helps.

Definitely.

Cheers,
Michael Vogt

It might be worth downloading the Word 2007 Viewer - it's a free
download which allows you to View, print and copy Microsoft Word
documents, even if you don't have Microsoft Word installed:

Maybe somebody with access to Outlook 2007 can compare the two to see
if they are comparable.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I was hoping Browsercam had gotten

I think the best thing to do is grab a version for XP, I didn't
actually know I could add it to that.

Thanks for your help

Paul,

You might also check out Campaign Monitor - they have a new service where,
for 10 bucks, they'll show you where your email fails to pass spam filters
and also gives you screenshots of what it looks like in all the various
email programs including Outlook 2007. Enjoy!

Re: [WSG] Request possible?

2007-11-07 Thread Michael Vogt
Hello Philippe.

No problems ? With Fx Mac and Safari 2.04, 3.03beta and the latest
WebKit builds, the is a slight overlap: the top part of the floated
block is partly covered by the text outside of it. In Gecko the
floated block is under that text, in WebKit, the floated block is on
 top.
Depending on your font-size, this is more or less pronounced.

(It is a known issue/bug with that kind of trick, btw; the floated
block is placed slightly too high in the flow).

Thank you for pointing out the problems of the test document. Think
this will help later in the implementation.

I am aware that I have to do the finetuning. I sure can't expect
someone else to do my work. Beeing aware of this trick Georg posted
in the first place helps a lot.

Cheers,
Michael Vogt

[WSG] 3 New Fast Track Tutorials

2007-11-07 Thread Frank Palinkas
Hi All,

For those who may be interested, I've published three new Fast Track
tutorials to the http://frank.helpware.net site:

Building Accessible Static Navigation with CSS
Calling Accessible Context-Sensitive Help with Unobtrusive DOM/JavaScript *
Creating Auto-line Numbered Code Blocks with CSS *

* These two tutorials will be presented at the upcoming 2008 WritersUA Annual
Conference in March at Portland, Oregon, USA. You can reach them through the
Go to the Fast Track Tutorials hyperlink on the home page of the preceding
web address.

All work is done in the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Source Code Editors for
(X)HTML, CSS and JScript. I've updated and redesigned all tutorials employing
the CSS 2.1 Liquid Box Model for layout/presentation, and built fully
accessible static navigation for mouse and keyboard into every web page. Each
web page illustrates the complete separation of Structure/Content ((X)HTML),
Presentation (CSS), and Behavior (Unobtrusive DOM/JavaScript), the semantic
nature of the content/markup relationship, and the application of
accessibility attributes and values according to the US Govt. Section 508
Rules of the ADA and the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 - Level
Double A.

Please use these and the other tutorials whenever you may need them. They are
free to the technical writing, user assistance, and web design communities.
If thoughts of a contribution come to mind, may I kindly recommend your local
children's cancer crusade fund?

I'd like to humbly thank all those who took their personal time and energy to
review, comment, and provide technical and grammatical feedback to me. They
are represented in these groups: Help Authoring Tools and Techniques (HATT),
the Guild of Accessible Web Designers (GAWDS), and the Web Standards Group
(WSG).

Please enjoy! :-)
