One of the recent suggestions on balancing columns without javascript was to put a tiny graphic in the columns set at the appropriate repeat.

Digging around in there I don't think I see the article I was originally looking for, but this seems to be the same thing (overflow: auto;). It's not exactly as I remembered it either, but that's a different subject (my poor memory)...
