OMG @ IE 1.0 (4.40.308)! :D

That's pretty cool though. I have always avoided "IE multiple
installers" due to various issues that I can't remember at this
moment; it looks like IECollection is pretty solid though.

I personally like using the official MS approach: Install VPC and
download all IE versions here:

What I hate about the VPC images is that they expire and they are
large to download!

On the other hand, I like that they are clean installs in an
encapsulated environment.

Anyway, thanks for link!

Hi!

Sounds like a fun project that you are tackling!

I am not sure I can help much, but if you have time to browse the net,
maybe the info on via these links will be of some help:

1.
"W3C Media Queries"
<http://www.w3.org/TR/css3-mediaqueries/>

2.
"Mobile-friendly: The mobile web optimization guide"
<http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/the-mobile-web-optimization-guide/>

3.
"ProtoFluid: Rapid Prototyping of Adaptive CSS and Responsive Design."
<http://protofluid.com/>

4.
"Smashing Magazine: How To Use CSS3 Media Queries To Create a Mobile
Version of Your Website"
<http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2010/07/19/how-to-use-css3-media-queries-to-create-a-mobile-version-of-your-website/>

>From the W3C site:

[[

Several media queries can be combined in a media query list. A
comma-separated list of media queries. If one or more of the media
queries in the comma-separated list are true, the whole list is true,
and otherwise false. In the media queries syntax, the comma expresses
a logical OR, while the ‘and’ keyword expresses a logical AND.

]]

Based on what I am reading above, if I am understanding it correctly
(I am 3 glasses of wine deep atm) maybe your logic is a little off in
terms of one of the bits of logic being false, so that makes the whole
statement false? You might play around with Protofluid app and work
with the comma vs. the AND (or combo of both.)

I hope that helps!

Micky

Totally agree with Paulo.

In terms of CMS/Blogs, I like these:

1. ExpressionEngine

2. Textpattern

They are both more blog than CMS... I guess it really depends on your
needs. EE has some good addons for managing flat pages. TXP is free
whereas EE has a nominal yearly fee for the licensing.

You also might consider a framework. I prefer these:

1. Django (Python)
2. CodeIgniter (PHP)

Django is pretty dope... I think I like it better than CI, but the
learning curve can be steep depending on your level of experience.

You might also look at content management systems built using CI and/or Django:

1. Django-cms

2. Pinax

You might also check out this site:

Django Packages

Expression Engine 2.0 (their latest version) is built on CI.

PyroCMS looks good (built on CI):

I do agree with the others who suggest WordPress though... If you are
pretty new to CMS/Blog systems, with WP you will probably be
up-and-running in no time. :)

Good luck!

Maybe not the best solution, but I tend to set the legend to
display:none (IIRC, one can't position off-screen in some browsers), and
then insert a tad bit of additional HTML which is styled to emulate a
legend... I call this class .pseudoLegend:

(CSS:)

/* Emulate : */
div.pseudoLegend {
background: #fff url(line.gif) repeat-x 0 50%; /* 5px X 1px */
margin: 15px 0 5px;
}
div.pseudoLegend h5 {
font-size: 85%;
font-weight: bold;
color: #575f6b;
text-transform: uppercase;
background-color: #fff;
margin: 0;
padding: 0 5px 0 0;
display: inline;
}
/* Hide certain elements for browsers without CSS: */
.hide { display: none !important; }

(HTML:)

...
...

It works for me. :)

Re: [WSG] Javascript image rotator

2007-07-12 Thread Micky Hulse

Al Sparber wrote:

The animations are cool but if one optimizes images for the web then there's
not much to work with and you're back to a cross-fade. All the animations are
jittery in Firefox, which is normal, and there does not seem to be a fallback
if script is disabled to at least be able to link to all of the images. I'm
obviously a bit prejudiced, but I kind of think this one is more usable:

Yeah, I did not mean to make it sound like it was the best thing out
there, but it really worked well for my last project (I did not have
time to write something from scratch.)

I personally do not like all the funky animations included... Simple
fades is all I will ever probably need. I like simple... Fortunately, so
did my client.

I guess it depends on your project requirements... A simple image
placeholder is all I usually need if JS is turned off or whatever. But I
do like the thought of linking to a gallery of images.

Also, FF/XP is pretty smooth for me. But then again, I dislike pretty
much all but the fading transitions.

http://www.projectseven.com/products/galleries/ssm/ssm_03.htm

That looks nice. Very good work. :)

I will have to add this to my delicious bookmarks.

Only thing I could see as being a problem for me is all the "extras."

In fact, the script I pointed to in my last post has this problem too:
Too much extras.

Coming back to what I originally said above, I like simple. I am sure
you allow for users to turn off all the buttons and counters and gallery
menus and such, but then that makes the code that much more bloated.

I would love to see a JS fading image slideshow rotator that was highly
decoupled from the CSS/HTML (unobtrusive), and that was modular... For
example, instead of just setting a variable to "no" or "false" one would
be able to remove the code/method from the script if not needed (vs.
having the non-used functions sitting around collecting dust.)

Modular JS for those of us that feel comfortable tweaking that type of
thing.

It's not free, though... but it is totally automated for Adobe Studio users.

Looks nice though.

I guess I thought the original poster wanted something more for a simple
banner vs an actual gallery script.

But for a gallery application, this definitely looks worth the $$.

Have a great day/night.
Cheers,
Micky

Re: [WSG] Javascript image rotator

2007-07-12 Thread Micky Hulse

For my last project I used this:

You can simplify it down to fading transitions with random image
display. It will display a placeholder image of your choosing if JS is
not available.

I have yet to find an equivalent JS slideshow.

Uses mootools. I am not the biggest fan of the mootools documentation
and/or forum support, but it is pretty lieghtweight js framework.

The Slideshow itself is pretty good from a JS perspective... I mean, I
do think it could be a little more decoupled from the CSS/HTML, but
overall I think it is well written.

Good luck!

Micky

More detail on what you need would help me. Are these complex

Oooh, yah. Fieldsets are tricky to style. I opt to keep things simple
when it comes to fieldset/legends.

Is there a fix or alternatively how would you hide the background-color
from IE6 only.

Use Conditional Comments.[1]

Fore example (in head, after main stylesheet call):

"IF IE on PC, and less than IE 7, Use this stylesheet (OR inline styles)"

I personally dropped support for anything less than IE 6 (just feed
un-styled content), so the above works well for me.

In your case, you would probably want to put some styling in the
conditional stylesheet that overrides your real style... maybe:

fieldset { background-color: transparent; }

...or give same background color as your container.

[1]

Hope that helps. I am no guru, so I could have missed something.

Micky

the job extremely well.

For swfObject (I assume UFO too), you can put anything you want in the
alt div.

Check out this site:

View source and find #header... They opted to put a menu in the alt

I've not found that so far. Once you get your head around the way you
can embed templates in other templates, it's just like using includes.

[OT]
Kinda, but not really. With normal PHP includes, one does not have to
pass/set variables... I find that clunky -- also, working with URL
segments is not the most easy thing in the world.

Overall, I think EE is great, but the templating could use mucho

things I find annoying.

For the sake of not going further OT, I will stop my complaining. :D

Expression Engine is good and reliable... but you got to pay approx 200$
for commercial license. Also, currently EE does not have a full-featured
E-commerce module (just basic paypal.)

The current approach for most EE users is to use something like Cubecart
or Zencart.

Note: I hear there is a full-featured module being developed for EE... I
hope it comes-out soon... Keep a look-out here:

Additionally, I find that EE makes me pull my hair out trying to make
sure I have all my settings perfected... I think EE is great for folks
that are not perfectionistic (maybe it is just me) -- I personally spend
way too much time playing with EE settings -- For a couple pro-bono
projects, I never finished (or switched to an alternative solution)
partly due to all the "loose ends" that need to be tied in order to get
EE fully optimized. Additionally, code redundancy is also a problem when
it comes to templates (though, some would say this is a feature of
EE)... Long story short, overall optimization can be attained, but it
takes time, especially if you are new to the templating syntax and EE
workflow.

Do not get me wrong, EE is really nice though -- I would say there are
many more good aspects than bad (great community support via forums.)
Also, due to the price, EE is always growing and getting better.

I love Textpattern, but it is lacking in the E-commerce department. Prob
best to get a third party app (i.e. Cubecart/Zencart) for e-commerce
stuff if using TXP.

Drupal looks a bit too involved -- I enjoy coding, but it looks like if
you got a quick deadline, and are new to Drupal, then you are SOL for
quick-turnaround.

I have heard good and bad things about Joomla (I personally never got
past the installation.) Also, I rarely need a CMS that has everything
under the sun (this is main reason why I love TXP.)

I have heard Website Baker is good, though never used it... not sure
about e-commerce, but maybe worth a gander:
