[WSG] Looking for feedback on a Fireworks plugin for generating accessible sprite navigation

2007-08-22 Thread Andrew Ingram

Hi all,

Half of this is a plug and half of this is a call for testing and
suggestions for improvement.

I've been developing a command panel for Fireworks that generates the
HTML and CSS for a horizontal menu that uses the sprite-background
technique for hover/active states. Obvious examples being
http://veerle.duoh.com/ and http://www.apple.com. It's a simple enough
technique but can involve a few fiddly calculations and is not exactly
fun, the plugin essentially makes the whole process much faster.

I've only been able to test this on a couple of my own examples so
there's probably a few bugs that i'm keen to track down.

I'm mostly looking for input on the quality of the outputted HTML and
CSS, I think I've done it fairly well but another set (or sets) of eyes
might spot something I've missed. The obvious accessibility issue is
that I'm hiding the text but everything else seems alright to me.

Basically you load your navigation matrix image in Fireworks, add guides
to separate the different menu items and states then run the plugin -
more information at
http://www.andrewingram.net/articles/generating_sprite_navigation_from_fireworks/
if you want to try it out.

I was hoping to make this for Photoshop too but there are some annoying
limitations.

Thanks

- Andrew Ingram

RE: [WSG] Looking for feedback on new AP

2004-05-11 Thread Chatham, Will
Hi John,
Here are some comments on your site and the AP:

- Is the splash screen really needed? Seems it just introduces one extra
step to getting inside the site, which in today's world, could be one too
many. Personally, I would rethink having 'requirements' on the splash
screen as well. One benefit of using web standards is to do away with
requirements.

- It took me a while to figure out what the site was about, and what an AP
was, and what you were offering. I still wasn't sure what incentive would
lead me or anyone to submit a site.

- Contrary to the logos on the front page, I couldn't get any pages to
validate as HTNML4.01, nor could I get the WCAG (Bobby) validator to pass
it.

- I liked the color scheme

Hope that helps!

Will Chatham

Dear Andy,

Side note question. What is a browsercam account? With only 3% of my
users using Opera, Mozilla and Safari, tend to look at Netscape and IE,
but I worry about the other browsers.

Thanks,

Nancy

Design looks nice. Not to be rude, but is it a template or did you
design it yourself?

Had a look in Safari. The header stuff is fine, but the main content is
a little all over the place. Would probably be a good idea to get hold
of a browsercam account.

Netscape7 is Mozilla, they are one and the same thing as they use the
same rendering engine (as do Firefox and Camino, the beta standalone
browsers) - you can safely incorporate the two into one group.

Re: [WSG] Looking for feedback

It's an original design created by a friend of mine.

I only have access to Moz/IE/Opera but I'll look into Safari issues.

Thanks Andy.
