Impact is a big surprise and I thought Tahoma would be above Treb on the list. Mark, is that a promotion in your footer? RE: [WSG]Font support chart?
Russ I agree completely. The only reason I was curious was that we are looking at using text headings that have some level of branding relevance & wondering what sort of fonts we could experiment with. I had my doubts about Tahoma but it could just scrape in. Font lists ending in a generic font family are an absolute must. Re: [WSG]Font support chart?
Mark, These is handy figures! Regardless of the figures, font family cascading is still important. Always specify the font you want first, then (possibly) an option, and finally a generic font family (serif, sans-serif, monospace, cursive, fantasy). For example: { font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; } { font-family: times, "times new roman", serif; } This means that if a user doesn¹t have the desired font, they will either get a secondary font or at least a similar generic font. Also note that font families with multiple words must be enclosed within quotes. RE: [WSG]Font support chart?
Thanks Lindsay I compiled this list into a bit of a chart & averaged the support across browsers. No fancy weightings have been added just win + mac + *nix / 3. Also no account was given to font families, just unique font names. The fonts that came out with more than 70% support are: Arial 90.30% Courier New 89.20% Times New Roman 80.13% Arial Black 79.57% Verdana 79.45% Comic Sans MS 77.81% Trebuchet MS74.88% Impact 73.90% Georgia 71.58% After this it drops off pretty quickly to 30% and below. The full list is attached. RE: [WSG]Font support chart?
You can try the Code Style Font Sampler: http://www.codestyle.org/css/font-family/index.shtml 'Standard' is a funny term for fonts, too, as things like Office & IE install heaps of additional fonts. -- Lindsay Evans.
