Re: [wsjt-devel] User Guide updates for WSJT-X Version 1.8

2017-08-02 Thread Neil Zampella

Hi all,

just built r7990 and saw the updates to the User Guide. Some quick notes:

The left hand slider is still mentioned in the User Guide in para 10.3.

In para 10.4, a 'Center' panel is shown, but there configuration
settings not mentioned in the text, what is apparently covered in the
text is the standard JT65/JT9 center panel. This would definitely
confuse a new user.

Another thing I am just thinking of and maybe I missed it, but maybe a mention
of a priori with a description of what it is.

Just had a series 5 decodes of CT1HZE here CQing on FT8 mode on 6 meters. His
last decode was at -23 with a1 showing on the side. That made me think of it. 😊

The X Fast modes in WSJT-X send their messages repeatedly in a single Tx
sequence. The single-frame message duration is generally much less than the
T/R sequence length.

FT8 sends transmits its basic message frame exactly once in a Tx interval. It
is therefore deemed to be a slow mode. (It's just not as "slow" as the
one-minute slow modes.)

2017-08-02 Thread Greg Beam
Hi Chuck,

C:\JTSDK\tools is where the GNU tools are kept (awk, sed, grep, ls, and many
others). JTSDK Maintenance ( C:\JTSDK\maint.cmd) is just a shell script that
sets up a specific environment (add paths and such).

The Icon: JTSDK Update, runs the update.cmd script from within the root
directory. It’s the same as opening JTSDK Maintenance, typing update, then
upgrade.

It’s a good point that, using the JTSDK Update icon is probably a better route
for most rather than using JTSDK Maintenance.

Hi Chuck,

the subversion revision numbers monotonically increment for each change
made to the whole repository. When you build from a branch, which is a
subset of the whole repository the build records the latest revision
number for all the files in the subset. So at any one time the highest
revision number may be in any branch, it does reflect the latest change
in the whole repository but not necessarily the latest change in the
part you built.

Section 12.1, re. FT8 end-of-line information: an explanation of the

Hi Joe,

MSK144 is targeted at meteor scatter reflections. It would indeed be
very useful on 10m and over here in region 1 it is certainly used on 4m.

I believe that in NA the restriction that disallows it on 10m is the
symbol rate which is limited to no higher than 1200 (a restriction that
dates back to 1980 when digital transmissions were first allowed),
MSK144 is 2000. The signal is no wider than a typical SSB signal, it
can't be because it is produced by an SSB rig. In areas where
restrictions are purely band width limited I'm sure that it would be
allowed in an SSB sub-band, so long as suitable identification
requirements were followed, but not in FCC controlled NA.

1. Why not go to the WSJT-X User Guide? You might start at these two
places:

file:///C:/JTSDK/wsjtx/devel/qt55/1.7.1/Release/build/doc/wsjtx-main_en.html#_msk144

file:///C:/JTSDK/wsjtx/devel/qt55/1.7.1/Release/build/doc/wsjtx-main_en.html#FAST_MODES

2. Please post requests for help on the wsjtgroup email list, rather
than here at wsjt-devel. This list is intended for communication among
the WSJT developers and beta testers.

On a loop-back test it looks to me like the autoseq does not kick in until

Hi Dan,

this is a slightly tricky situation to deal with. We accept any message with
the word 73 as a sign off that triggers logging but in this case it also
picked up the callsign even though the message was not for you. This
behaviour is only when the decode is +/- 10Hz of your frequency and it just
crept in. Looks like we will have to detect that it is a standard 73 message
but not for you, that will stop it sending 73 to a station that you didn't
work as well.

We make hard work for ourselves by having such a good decoder that can
disentangle signals on top of each other.
