[wtp-dev] Moving the org.eclipse.wst.command.env* plugins to web services project
Hi, I'm proposing to move the command framework plugins from the webtools.common project to the webtools.webservices project. These plugins are: - org.eclipse.wst.command.env - org.eclipse.wst.command.env.core - org.eclipse.wst.command.env.ui These plugins contain the command framework used by the Web services tools currently but could potentially be used by other components. That's why they reside in the webtools.common project. These plugins were contributed by developers who currently also work on the Web services project and are maintained by them. Since these plugins are currently only used by the Web services plugins (and I'm not aware of any team planning to use that framework), I propose to move these plugins to webtools.webservices project to make the effort in committing changes to those plugins easier for these developers. Note that the org.eclipse.wst.common.environment plugin which contains the environment frameswork will remain in webtools.common since the J2EE team is actively using it. I've opened RFE 264262 (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=264262) for making this change. Please enter your comments there if you have any concern over this move targetted for WTP 3.1 M6. Hi Sergey, I tried the scenario you mentioned and ran into the same Axis deploy problem as you found. For example, if you just create a simple HTML file and select "Run on server", you would also see the same error about "application.xml not found in the EAR". Since the application.xml file is supposed to be optional for EAR 5.0, it seems like the JBoss server code cannot handle this configuration. This problem does not occur if you create a dynamic Web project with version 2.4 (Java version 1.4 or 5.0) targetting JBoss 4.2 (EAR version 1.4). Hi Sainath, Creating EJB Web services is currently not supported in WTP. We only support the creation of Web service in a Web project for Axis1 and Axis2. We had a long standing RFE (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=89922) opened to request for this support but it had been closed with "No Plan to Fix" given the following rationale: There's no plan to implement this enhancement in Axis1 given the current resource on the Web services team. Please note that we now have support for Axis2 (the next generation Web services runtime). Even though the Axis2 tool in WTP currently does not support EJB Web service either, future enhancement to support the creation of EJB Web service would likely be for the Axis2 runtime rather than the Axis1 runtime. You are welcome to open an RFE for the Axis2 Web services tools in WTP to support the creation of EJB Web service. [wtp-dev] Nomination of Chris Brealey and Craign Salter for Committer Emeritus status
I've been asked to clarify my nomination for Chris Brealey and Craig Salter for Committer Emeritus status for the benefit of those who are less familiar with their work in WTP. I did not elaborate when I nominated them earlier today since I thought everyone in WTP is already very familiar with the work Chris and Craig had done over the years. Chris was the component lead in the Web services component and Craig was the component lead in the XML and XML Web services component since the initial formation of WTP. They were instrumental in setting the direction of WTP and guiding it through the various releases. They laid out a lot of the ground work for their respective components and had been shaping the direction of these components ever since. Over the years, they contributed designs documents, implemented RFEs, provide fixes, and reviewed patches from other team members. They had been very actively participating in the WTP community in general until they had a change of job responsibility a few months ago. For that reason, they had submitted their resignation to the WTP PMC. Following the process outlined recently to maintain an up-to-date list of active committers, I requested to expire their committer rights for the Web services subproject and to nominate them for Committer Emeritus status in recognition to their previous contribution. [wtp-dev] Critical defect 218982 - Server not restarted automatically when required
Hi, With today's WTP 3.0 M5 candidate driver (wtp-sdk-S-3.0M5-20080214072830), I found a regression problem where Tomcat 5.5 server is not automatically restarted when a Web project is added to a started server. The server would show that the Web project is added but the automatic restarting does not take place. I've opened bug 218982 (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=218982) for this critical problem. In the Web services wizard, we are counting on the server to be restarted as required when adding a new Web project to the server. Since the restart did not take place, the Web services wizard would fail to deploy Axis1 Web service since it requires a running server with the Web project added. A number of other Web services scenarios are broken as well. The only workaround is to manually add and restart the Web project before running the Web service scenarios. This needs to be fixed before M5 can be declared. Hi, For those who depends on org.eclipse.jst.ws.consumption.ui and org.eclipse.wst.ws.ui, please read on ... Please note that in order to complete the move of the Web Services Explorer plugin from the JST to the WST install package, we had to move the Web service pop-up category from the the org.eclipse.jst.ws.consumption.ui to the org.eclipse.wst.ws.ui plugin. This has been done in defect 202303 (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=202303) and had just been released to HEAD for WTP 3.0. The major thing that adopters will need to do is to change the Web services popop menu path. This menu path was: org.eclipse.jst.ws.atk.ui.webservice.category.popupMenu/popupActions It has been changed to: org.eclipse.wst.ws.ui.webservice.category.popupMenu/popupActions Another change that adopters should be aware of is the version changes for 2 WTP plugins. The org.eclipse.jst.ws.consumption.ui plugin changed it's version from 1.0.205 to 1.1.0. The org.eclipse.wst.ws.ui plugin changed it's version from 1.0.203 to 1.1.0. Fw: [wtp-dev] Web Services Explorer functional in WTP 3.0 WST download
Hi Lawrence, Yes. We had the idea of running the Web Services Explorer as a WAR outside of Eclipse (bug 89191) but we had been running into a couple of issues and had not been able to spend any more effort to further pursue that. Back in WTP 2.0, we had added an Eclipse extension point in the WSE when we implemented RFE 176493 (WSE: Make message/transport stack pluggable - https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=176493). In addition, the move from Tomcat to Jetty requires the WSE to be packaged as an Eclipse plugin to run in the Jetty engine. With these two recent development, running the WSE outside of Eclipse is even harder to achieve. So I think we would just be shelfing that idea for now. We could revisit that decision if we feel that there is significant demand from the community for this feature to justify re-opening the issue. We could further any discussion of this issue in bug 89191. [wtp-dev] Web services tools in WTP 3.0 integration driver
Hi, I've run smoke tests on today's WTP 3.0 integration driver: http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/committers/drops/R3.0/I-I200708170224-200708170224/ All the Web services smoke tests passed except for the Web Services Explorer. So the WTP 3.0 integration driver seems to be hanging together quite nicely. I was able to create dynamic Web project, run on server and go through Web services scenarios. As mentioned in the WTP status meeting, users would not be able to bring up the Web Services Explorer in the current WTP 3.0 driver since the imbedded Tomcat engine had been removed in Eclipse 3.4 M1 and we are still migrating the Web Services Explorer to use Equinox Jetty ( https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=192785). Since about October last year, Lahiru has been operating as a dedicated member of the WTP Web Services tools team on the design, development, testing and documentation of a new set of extensions to the Web services platform in WTP 2.0 to support the development of Apache Axis2 Web services and clients. Lahiru has contributed a substantial amount of new code to the platform and in so doing accomplished rich integration between Eclipse WTP and Apache Axis2. Along the way, he has amassed impressive breadth and depth of knowledge in plug-in development for the Eclipse and, of course, WTP Web services platforms. He has contributed extensions to the Eclipse preferences framework, the Web services framework and the facets framework. He implemented a mechanism similar to that found in Server Tools whereby WTP does not include any actual Axis2 code, but instead allows the user to point WTP to an independent Axis2 installation and, under the covers, reflectively exploit it. Not limiting himself to just "the code", he has also written tutorials and contributed functional test suites for the Axis2 tools. The query below [2] demonstrates the variety of RFEs and bugs Lahiru has responsively worked on over the past few months. Lahiru has applied sound judgement, skill, discipline, adaptability, insight, a genuinely affable nature and strong sense of enthusiasm and helpfulness to the Eclipse WTP project - all traits typical of a Committer. In recognition of Lahiru's accomplishments to date and to unleash him on a variety of improvements to the Axis2 tools we wish to explore beyond WTP 2.0, please join me in casting a "+1" for Lahiru as a WTP Web services Committer. [wtp-dev] Testing WTP install from Europa Discovery Site failed
Hi, The Europa testing does not look very good for WTP functions. I then did 3 different tests: 1. Mimimum set testing with just choosing wst under "Web and JEE Development". Check "select required". This selected all it's prereqs (e.g. EMF, GEF etc.). 2. Normal set testing with just choosing jst under "Web and JEE Development". Check "select required". This selected all it's prereqs (including wst). 3. Maximum set testing with choosing all Europa component (except to not select "other tools" (because of bug 191530 - Buckminster - Subversion support missing required plugin). In all 3 tests, most of the WTP functions (except server tooling) seems to be missing even though the wst and jst plugins are there. I've opened defect 191585 (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=191585) to track this problem. I'll add ... be sure to test with different features installed in different locations. This is settable about three dialogs of "next" using the update manager. Due to various reasons, it is possible that update manager will install the same bundle at different locations, but only one of them gets activated for any particular session. This will cause some odd looking messages in your log, such as the following: !ENTRY org.eclipse.update.configurator 2007-06-05 23:25:25.609 !MESSAGE Could not install bundle ../WTP/eclipse/plugins/org.apache.commons.logging_1.0.4.v200705231731.jar Bundle "org.apache.commons.logging" version "1.0.4.v200705231731" has already been installed from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]/org.apache.commons.logging_1.0.4.v200705231731.jar Notice the name and versions are identical. It is not obvious from the message, but I installed "WTP" in a directory called " ../WTP/" relative to the base Eclipse. And, "commons.logging" is used by base, and us, so it ends up installed twice and is just an informative message ... there is no real error in that. (this is desirable, since a whole location can be "disabled", resulting in a missing bundle if not installed twice). So ... the thing to test is ... does anyone make any funny "file system location" assumptions that they should not be making. I did test bottom-up webservice creation with this particular division of locations and it worked fine. (and think it is one case that "locates" and copies "commons.logging" to server?) That means Kathy and the WebServices team have done a good job :) ... but has everyone else, everywhere? As long as everyone is using "platform:" URL scheme things should work fine ... but ... for an extreme example, if someone were to "look up" commons.logging, and then assume from there where the "axis" bundle was located at some relative location, they'd be wrong in these cases. Hopefully this is "old news" and no one does this ... just a reminder that there is a lot of testing still to do! [wtp-dev] Web services tools in this week's I Build: I-I200705111421-200705111421
Please note the following noteworthy additions in this week's integration build for Web services tools (this would be included in the RC0 News and Noteworthy document): 1. The Axis2 Web services tools now supports Axis2 v1.2. 2. The Web Services Explorer now supports pluggable message/transport stack (enhancement 176493). 3. A new optional attribute "mergerClass" is introduced in the Web services implementation type extension point "org.eclipse.jst.ws.consumption.ui.wsImpl". This mergerClass should implement the newly defined IMerger interface with a load() and merge() method. This class is used for the purpose of Web services skeleton file merging for the Web service implementation type. A JavaMerger has been defined for the Java Web service implementation type " org.eclipse.jst.ws.wsImpl.java". See bug 182274 for more detail. There are also a few known problems that users should be aware of: 1. Bug 186262 - UDDI page does not work in Web Services Explorer. - This is a classloading problem with uddi4j, common-logging and log4j (see defect for detail). The workaround is to create a Web service with the Axis 1.x runtime first before using UDDI in the Web Services Explorer. We'll pick up a new build with the fix for this defect before entering RC0 FVT testing early next week. 2. Bug 186633 - Xerces ClassCastException in Web services scenarios after running Web services Ant task. - The problem is being investigated. 3. Bug 184296 - Duplicate projects generated by Web services wizard in Java perspective. - This is a JDT bug that has been fixed in Eclipse 3.3 05/08 driver. WTP 2.0 RC0 is still on Eclipse M7. We'll pick this fix up after RC0. 4. Bug 186233 - Sample JSP option missing from generate sample popup. - We'll try to fix this next week in time for RC0. [wtp-dev] New Axis2 Web services tools in WTP 2.0
Hi, Please note that the Axis2 [1] Web services runtime is now supported by the Web services tools in this week's WTP 2.0 integration driver. You can now create bottom-up, top-down Axis2 Web service and Axis2 Web service client using the Web services tools that is currently in WTP. This is the result of the initial contribution by WSO2 [2] to integrate Axis2 into WTP (RFE 165664) [3] and includes the following RFEs: - 168762 - Create Axis2 bottom-up and top-down Java Web service. [4] - 172186 - Create Axis2 Web service client. [5] - 168765 - User-specified Axis2 runtime location. [6] - 168766 - Adding Axis2 facet. [7] - 168937 - Axis2 preference page. [8] Please refer to the "Axis2 integration in WTP" wiki [9] for more information on the ongoing Axis2 integration effort and for RFEs being considered for post-WTP 2.0. Two new Axis2 Web services tools tutorials have been created under the Web Services tutorials section in the WTP Web site: - Creating bottom-up Axis2 Web service [10] - Creating top-down Axis2 Web service [11] In addition, a Webinar "Introduction to Web services tools in WTP" [12] will be held on May 3 at 3:00 pmGMT (11:00 EST). This would include a demonstration of the Axis2 Web services tools. Yes. David already pointed to the fact that I need to change to use -XX:MaxPermSize=128m. I've tried that and even increase to 256m but still run into this problem. I've run into this with Sun JDK 1.5.0_07, 1.5.0_09 and 1.5.0_10. Seng ran into the same problem as well. [wtp-dev] Enhancements in Web Services test extension released last week
Hi, Please note that an enhancement to the Web service test extension point has been made in last week's WTP 1.5.1 M-build: 1.5.1 Thu, 24 Aug 2006 -- 17:26 (UTC) See defect 153833 for detail. Here's a short description of the change: We have changed the org.eclipse.jst.ws.consumption.ui.tester extension point so that a particular Web service test extension can optionally specify that they only support a particular kind of Web service client runtime type. When deciding which Web service test facility to present to the user, the Web service wizard would then take this optional attribute into account depending on which Web service runtime is being processed. Since the test extension do not necessarily know about what runtime it can support (there could be many Web service runtime extender), we are letting the Web service runtime extenders define which test extension could support their client runtime via the new "supportedClientRuntime" attribute. You can specify more than one client runtime by listing the client runtimes one after another seperated by a space. For Web services tester extensions that can restrict support by client runtime, such as the Web Services sample JSP generator, we have added a new attribute "allowClientRuntimesRestriction" and set it to "true". This attribute will be defaulted to "false" so that existing Web Service Tester extenders do not have to react to this change or be inadventently restricted by a particular client runtime some plugin higher up in the stack may specify. So as a result, Web Service test facility such as the Web Services Explorer would still show up for all Web service runtime. Since we have now allowed the Web services sample JSP generator to "allowClientRuntimesRestriction" and set the "supportedClientRuntime" to the Axis Web service client runtimes, the Web Services Sample JSP generator test facility would not be showing up for other Web service runtimes unless they add an extension similar to the following defined for the Axis Web service runtime: id= "org.eclipse.jst.ws.internal.consumption.ui.widgets.test.WebServiceSampleTest" supportedClientRuntimes= "org.eclipse.jst.ws.axis.consumption.java org.eclipse.jst.ws.axis.consumption.web"> In addition, we have added 2 optional attributes to the Web service test extension: - codeGenerated (defaulted to false, should set to true if code will be generated by this test extension) - serverRequired (defaulted to false, should set to true if this test extension requires a server to run) Please see defect 104870 for more detail. The above changes had been communicated to the known extenders to Web services runtime. [wtp-dev] Improvement to the Web service creation framework in this week's M-build
Hi, Please note that there's an improvement to the Web services creation framework that extenders might want to take advantage of in this week's WTP 1.5.1 M-build: 1.5.1 Thu, 17 Aug 2006 -- 16:32 (UTC) When creating a top-down Web service, the Web services framework now opens the editor on the generated implementation file. Strictly speaking, extenders do not have to react to this change. However, in the interest of performance and correct behaviour, extenders should remove any code they have in their extension to launch an editor for the top-down generated skeleton Java file, and insure their WebServiceInfo object identifies one or more absolute URIs to the one or more generated skeletons. Please see bug 135395 for details. To wtp-dev@eclipse.org cc Subject [wtp-dev] Nomination of Peter Moogk to WTP committer I am writing to nominate Peter Moogk as a committer on the WTP project. Peter has been a dedicated and prolific contributor of the highest quality, well designed enhancements and fixes to the Web services tools of the WTP project since its inception. There are few aspects of the tools with which Peter is not fluent or has not applied his considerable skill at OO design. He designed, implemented, documented, tested and maintains the Environment Command Framework which has been instrumental in enabling our core tool scenarios to run in a variety of graphical and non-graphical contexts without alteration. Thru collaboration with the J2EE team he has driven convergance of the Web service and J2EE tools teams' wizard frameworks. He is responsible for the internet proxy page, leads our effort to have our Web service tools behave well in international locales, and continually seeks ways to improve the usability and performance characteristics of the tools. Peter never hesitates to share his technical advice and leadership, particularly in Web services and Java OO design, with others. There is no question in my mind that the WTP platform will benefit greatly by granting Peter committer status so that he can directly help guide the evolution of the Web services platform. A glance at the ~87 bugs and RFEs Peter has contributed [1] is testimony to this. It's not automatically defaulted to the initial selection. Failure to do that would result in a ClassCastException when attempting to click Next or Finish. [5]. - You may need to resize the wizards to access all controls. This is especially important in order to access the client slider. [6] - Use the service and client sliders to control whether to develop, install and start the service and client. They replaces the check boxes that used to be on the first page. - There are cases when the Web service runtime, server, project and EAR are not defaulted properly. Re: [wtp-dev] Help with WTP
The wtp-dev list is supposed to be used for discussing development issues related to WTP. Please open a bugzilla defect if you found a problem with the code or make use of the WTP newsgroup for general usage questions. For this scenario you reported, bottom-up Web service should work. Please double check to see that you've upzip the driver properly and that plugins\org.apache.axis_1.2.1\lib exist containing axis-ant.jar. You might want to try the latest M driver (http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/drops/M-M200601251151-200601251151). I've smoke tested with that driver and bottom-up Web service is fine with that driver. I had also tested with the M20060117 driver but did not try the M20060118 driver you had. If you still have problem, please open a bugzilla defect and we can follow up with that. I had also ran Web services smoke test and specifically verified that defect 120014 had been fixed in the 12/11 05:22 RC3 driver. We would be asking the originator to verify 119997 as well. [wtp-dev] Web services smoke test result on RC2
Hi, Strictly speaking, Web services smoke tests pass on RC2 1208_1903 despite the two blocker bugs because of the following reasons: Bug 120014 : The smoke test do not involve changing any data in the Java Bean or Skeleton Configuration pages. Bug 119997: The problem does not show up when deploying Web service to Tomcat server. However, those are problems adopters will run into. [wtp-dev] Web services smoke test failed on RC1, requesting respin
Hi, I ran through the Web services smoke test on RC1 (12/01 03:37) and hit a blocker problem with all Web services scenario due to Axis wsdl2java timing out. I've opened bug 118819 (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=118819). This problem was introduced in fixing bug 87296 where we introduce a system property ("AxisWsdl2JavaTimeout") for the user to set the timeout value for wsdl2java. The fix was to revert back to the old behaviour of not setting the time out and leaving it as the Axis wsdl2java default. Now the timeout will only be set if the system property "AxisWsdl2JavaTimeout" is defined. The fix is simple (attached as a patch to the bug), isolated and had been tested. Without this fix, the only workaround is to set vmarg for "AxisWsdl2JavaTimeout" when bringing up Eclipse. This would not be a good user experience for RC1. With the fix for bug 118819, we also found a critical bug 118829 (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=118829) where if the user selects to generate client when creating a Web service, the user would not be able to go to the client page or finish the Web service wizard. We are looking at the problem and is very close to finding a solution. Without this problem fixed, the user would have to create the Web service without generating client and use the Web service client wizard to generate client. We are requesting to respin RC1 to pick up 118819 (and 118829 if the fix is available within the next hour, which is very likely). Sorry about the regressions introduced in recent bug fixes. We will be much more vigilant in unit testing and code review in the future! [wtp-dev] Web services team dropping fix for 116953
Hi We had committed and released the fix for defect 116953 (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=116953) to the next I-build. This is a problem with wrong module type being passed. Server tools module ids (and versions) were changed a couple of weeks ago to match the new J2EE facets. ServerUtils.isTargetValidForEAR() needs to be updated to react to this. Without this change, projects targeted to servers that requires EAR would have the EAR field disabled in the Web services wizard. This change is very isolated and had been tested. [wtp-dev] Web services smoke test passed with workaround using I20051116_1731 driver
Hi, The Web services smoke test passed using the I20051116_1731 driver. However there are couple of workarounds required related to target runtime and JRE version. 1. If you install Tomcat 5.0 runtime and the default JRE is 1.4.2, then the target runtime would show up properly when creating Dynamic Web project. However, if the default JRE is 1.5, then target runtime would be blank and you'll have to go to the 2nd page of the dynamic Web project, explicitly change the Java version from 5.0 to 1.4, select Bind to bind Tomcat 5.0 to the project. - Similarly, if you had installed Tomcat 5.5 runtime and the default JRE is not 1.5, then the target runtime would not show up. Defect 116699 (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=116699 - Facet wizards runtime selection should default facet versions) had been opened for this problem. 2. If you had create a dynamic Web project targeting Tomcat 5.5, then you'll need to set default JRE for your workspace to JRE 1.5. Otherwise, you'll get unsupportedClassVersionError when trying to access classes in that Web project. See defect 116713 (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=116713) for more detail. If we do any I-build at all, I will also release fixes for Bug 115959 (Two SDK "source plugins" mistakenly jarred) We'll still leave head builds going ... so those with new code, can start to get a sense of how that's going (but ... you'll remember my view .. head builds are not great, and you can do a lot just in development environment. Friday to Tuesday The committers decided that we have not achieved what we need for M9, and (.. this is the important part ... ) that we could with a few more days of "new code" before M9, and then still hold the line that post M9 will be entirely rampdown ... testing, documentation, and bug fixes only, after M9 declared. Below I've listed the (only) areas of "new code" allowed (at least, without further review and discussion of PMC). This "new code" will be complete by Tuesday evening, we will produce another declared I-build on Wednesday, 16th, before noon (eastern) .. and this Wednesday I-build will be the official M9 candidate that will begin full testing. Since we also want to achieve a high quality, stable M9 build, it was recommended by the committers that official M9 declare day should change from 11/18 to 11/23 to allow a full week of "milestone testing". The PMC will discuss and decide and announce this change of dates at Tuesday PMC meeting. [There was some concern expressed if we would have adequate time to ramp down, and have high quality Release 1. My own thought is "yes we can" ... but ... due to these concerns, progress and rampdown will be closely monitored]. There is no proposal (so far) to change the Release date. "P1" needs before M9 candidate build on Wednesday. 1. Componitize JST feature. (As discussed, this does not mean fixing *all* the "misfits" this componentization has revealed, e.g. some "core" plugins, will need to be in "ui" component features for Release 1.0. But .. the basic feature structure needs to be in place. 2. Finish getting docs in builds. (This mostly depends on '1' above, but, some "new work" too). 3. Finish facet aware wizards (as per Chuck's note .. basics are in place .. but, needs to be finished). 4. web project "refactoring" ability (more than it sounds .. umbrella for 6 or 7 important items). Code is ready, needs to be submitted as patch, built, and confirmed in build before full testing. 5. Extensible Runtime Bridge for facets ... a bit of a "hole" exposed by some "portal extenders". (Kosta and Tim are near solution and API addition). 6. Facet Core/UI extension (sorry Kosta .. I missed details of this one .. but any thing that improves core/ui separation is critical, IMHO). We'll still attempt a Friday noon declaration, but that appears to be "high risk" (or "tight timing"?) . But, all "must-hear teams" please report sanity tests results by noon -- everyone, please note "requests to rebuild" with blocking defect numbers by noon. [wtp-dev] Web services smoke test passed with 1028 00:17 I-build
Hi, With the 1028 00:17 I-build, the blocking problem 113974 and the JUnit failure with jst.ws had been fixed. The Web services smoke tests (the 4 Web services tutorials) passed except for the workaround required to create the service and client projects first before going through the Web service and Web services client wizard (defect 114044). Please note that the Web services performance tests are not functional yet with this week's driver due to project creation refactorings required in the Web services code. These tests should be functional in next week's I-build.
