I think that's a good idea. There is much more experience with Debian
then with Fedora. And about Ubuntu I would say to try this:

aptitude search '?and(~s universe,~i)'

... and you will see you are using many packages without security
support. I think that's maybe sometimes OK, but not for a thinclient server.

> May I ask what your experiences have been?

I have some years experiences with Debian thinclients in small
organisations, and I can tell you it works fine. I have used FreeNX
(with ThinStation) and now a little bit X2go.

Biggest problem was always flash, the quality of flash in a bigger
format is not good enough in my opinion and it can slow-down a user session.

Another point is to connect devices to clients. That's not always easy.

I have experiences with Debian stable and oldstable. I have heard X2go
works fine with testing. I use sometimes backports, e.g. for OpenOffice.

Always running testing is not a good idea in my opinion, it changes to
much. But you can do it for a short time.

[X2go-dev] Session Shadowing, Usb Device

2010-01-05 Thread Peter . Seckler
Hi,

I recently installed x2go, and the feature that I really miss is the
possibility for session shadowing. It would be great for me to help my users
from a remote location if they have a problem. Is something like this planned
for a future release?

One other question: is it possible to connect a usb device other than memory
sticks to the client and "tunnel" it to the server? I'd like to use a card
reader for the home banking software (money plex) with x2go.

Greetings

Peter

[X2go-dev] Proxy Disconnect

2010-01-05 Thread --[ UxBoD ]--
Hi,

we have recently started to use X2GO, and have to say it is great, though ran
into a small issue today. I was happily connected to my remote KDE desktop
when my physical desktop disconnected from the network.
On attempting to reconnect to the session I received a error message like
"Proxy session disconnect" (apologies; did not write it down). I connected to
via SSH to the virtual desktop and restarted the x2go service, attempted a
connection again, but still got the same error. I noticed looking at the
process list a couple of extra ssh sessions; for which I killed them all off
and attempted another connection. This time it was successful.

If a session becomes detached due to the physical machine, for arguments sake,
crashing should the client fail to connect ?

Best Regards,

Hello Peter,

we are currently working on the session shadowing feature. It will be the first
new feature in 2010. I think - with luck - you'll be able to test it in
january. At the moment we support only usb mass-storage devices, printers - and
on thin clients cdroms too. Whenever there is a native network access possible
like using "sane", it is possible to use our tunnel. We don't support USB
device nodes which should be recordnized by the server. SmartCard access was an
often requested feature and we are thinking about an elegant solution.

best regards,

Heinz

Thanks, Paul. Do you or others have experience mixing stable +
backports with testing using pinning? I've heard some say that is the
best of all worlds and others say it is a terrible idea because testing
pulls in new libraries which can badly break packages in stable. Thanks

[X2go-dev] Fullscreen mode in Windows not working

2010-01-05 Thread John A. Sullivan III
Hello, all. I've been testing X2Goclient 3.0.1-4 for Windows on two
separate computers running WindowsXP. I'm seeing the same problem on
both. I set the session mode to full screen and yet the session opens
to some less than full screen geometry with Window decorations. I have
ensured the old sessions were not running so it was not inheriting old
geometry. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? Thanks - John

[X2go-dev] Windows client hangs after screen saver starts

2010-01-05 Thread John A. Sullivan III
I'm running X2GoClient 3.0.1-4 on WindowsXP home. If I walk away from
my X2Go desktop for an extended period of time, when I stop the Windows
screen saver, the X2Go screen is completely white and refuses to close;
it must be forcibly closed. I've tried moving the mouse and typing the
screensaver password on the remote system but that did not work. If I
let Windows go to screen saver and then immediately end the screen
saver, I do not have this problem. Killing the process seems to be
stopping xming.

Is this a known issue? Where should I be looking for data to
troubleshoot? Thanks - John
