Re: [X2Go-User] Old Hardware

Yeah that's an old pice of... hardware..

You'd probably want >1GB of RAM for a reasonable thin...
The good news is that you can probably get some old laptop RAM on
ebay... Not sure how much this old thing can handle but a 512mb or 1Gb
should be ok (don't blame me if you buy something and it does not work).

If I remember correctly the Via C7 processor should have some basic
crypto acceleration and SSE2&SSE3 so with a bit extra RAM this thing
may do ok.

I guess Firefox uses more "drawing instructions" (which are rendered on
client side) while chrome just draws everything as a "picture" on the
server side, which X2Go then has to compress and decompress.

Being that this is really old, I'd hope your not using it in a business
environment (end of life in 2009?!).

You may want to play with the connection/compression settings..
Try lower colour depth and see if swapping between WAN and LAN setting
makes any difference I've seen some older HW do better with 2M-jpeg
or 256k-jpeg even... and WAN connection setting.

I have files a bug [1] containing your report. It hasn't been known so
far and it is an issue.

All I can add is that in general, pulseaudio sound between a Windows
client and an x86-based Debian Wheezy works fine, even with published
applications and multiple users. So it is most likely an issue with
your particular setup.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting your statement, but if you don't want to run
a window manager on the server side, you should be running one
locally, and you have to take care of starting pulseaudio on the
client as well.

You could do any of the following, IMO:
- - Run a remote desktop environment and set the rights on the *.desktop
files in a way that the users you want to let in via X2Go can only
access Firefox and the Logoff menu item.
- - Run a local desktop environment/window manager, possibly with some
manual configuration for pulseaudio.
- - run https://github.com/alandmoore/KiLauncher on the server and
specify the allowed apps there.

Note that as long as users can define their own sessions, there's
nothing that stops them from specifying another application unless you
removed access rights on the particular executable on the server. So
don't think of published applications as a security feature, they are not.

[X2Go-User] Old Hardware

2014-10-07 Thread ven...@gmail.com
Hi,

I have a thin client with 1 GHz and 512 MB RAM and it connects to the
x2goserver via LAN (100 MBit/s). The performance isn't good.
With my notebook (quadcore, 8 GB RAM) I have a very very good performance,

So is there an option to reduce the cpu usage on the client?

[X2Go-User] Is it possible to get pulseaudio sound in app mode?

2014-10-07 Thread Edouard Gaulué

Hi community,

I'm trying to achieve this: build a Firefox/Iceweasel application server
(Debian Wheezy) with several simultaneous clients using Raspberry Pi
(Raspbian) using x2go, everything being in a LAN. Of course each user
needs to hears just its own application sound. I don't want to send a
full desktop manager as I just want them to use Firefox/Iceweasel.

As of now, I don't have too much trouble to start Firefox/Iceweasel from
clients. Only troubles I get are :
 * the size of the Firefox window doesn't manage to get the local
screensize despite I tick "Fullscreen" in x2go, so I must use --heigth
and --width command line parameter

 * menu at the top doesn't work ether
 * no sound at all

I think everything is linked with the fact I try not to use a windows
manager, but I'm even not sure pulseaudio can deal with several
simultenous users.

Any advices/ideas would be really appreciated.

Best regards, EG
