OK, I brought up Ubuntu 15.04 on an Amazon EC2 instance, installed x2go and MATE, and everything works. The performance is really quite decent -- I am impressed. For people like me who are terminally challenged, it is very sweet to have a desktop in the cloud. One of the Gnome-3 fallback modes (I don't remember which) does work, I've had it working here, but the menu you get no longer has a System menu on the top bar, so I still prefer Mate. At least none not requiring a newer GLX extension. I guess there is a software rendering fallback, but this still fails with NX.
