Someone to create it. I think someone else on the list many months
ago had created one, or volunteered to create one.

The icon.xbm file I created is a black & white icon. I'm no artist
but it suited my needs at the time.

On Windows or Mac you should have some image manipulating program
that can take icon.xbm and convert it to a PNG. After that you
should be able to color it. Or start from scratch.

Is it possible that it's the segfault I fixed about two weeks ago?
That was a libcurl problem that would cause a segfault under certain
conditions. I don't know how new the code is that you're running,
but perhaps you're running with internet-based radar maps and
triggering this condition?

I think the only people that would wish to disable rtree are those
that run Xastir on severely memory-limited machines.

No. Up until very recently the Google Maps licensing was so
restrictive that we couldn't use them at all. At that point they
specifically excluded any sort of vehicle tracking. At some point
within the last few months they changed their licensing drastically,
making it possible that we might be able to use their maps in the
future. Nobody has seriously looked into doing so yet.

You might investigate the Shapefile format maps that Henk de Groot
has on his site, or look for WinAPRS/APRSdos/ or PocketAPRS maps
that are out there. Xastir can use any of them. You might also
prowl around on ESRI.com to see what they have for downloadable
maps. They have another site linked there that they also provide
which has a lot of downloadable Shapefiles.

[Xastir] icon for xastir

2006-12-24 Thread Tim Cwik

Seasons Greetings to all.

Does anyone know where to find a .png or other file that can be used as a
panel icon for a Linux Gnome desktop panel? Something close must exist
because Gnome uses the jeep with an antenna as a decoration in the top
left corner of the frame of the xastir window?

You can get a terminal window from the Applications->System Tools menu.
If you open one of those and start xastir in it with "xastir &" you'll
be able to get at your console output.

Bleah. That's annoying. I'll see if I can figure it out this week. I usually
don't have a windows machine running xastir (I've wiped the hard drive
on my windows laptop and installed linux on it, with windows running
in a virtual machine for the occasional video game), but I've got one
set up now running the virtual machine. Restarting the virtual machine's
networking might be as easy as following the instructions that
vmware-config-tools.pl outputs at the end of its run. But I am not sure
of that.

I'm glad to hear that. Hope everyone has that experience now that it's the

Just the instance of Xastir that is running. There's no terminal
window to have a look at to see what error might have happened. I've
managed to lose access to the ethernet pass through as well. Making
changes on the Windows side kills the connection, and I have not
figured out how to refresh the connection from within the VMWare
appliance.

> I also can't seem to get it to use shapefiles.

Check file permissions.

Bingo! I forgot about file permissions! That was indeed the root of my problems.

I have added a small section to the Wiki under Adding Maps in the
VMWare: How-to reminding people of this fact.

This is the first I have made use of the rtree function, and indeed it
appears to do a very good job of speeding up the processing of
shapefiles. My road .shp file is 42 MB in size, and the associated
.dbf file is 504 MB in size, yet Xastir can render a map in only a few
seconds.

Before rtree, I cut the file into Maidenhead gridsquare chunks. This
allowed Xastir to only process tiles within the viewing area. rtree
appears to work faster on the huge single file.

Now I have to define the dbfawk file for the Canadian shapefiles once
again. I did this once before, but never got things looking decent
before the file got eaten by a hard disk failure. Perhaps this time I
will save a copy offsite...

Seasons Greetings to all!

I know that at least one person here (who has never, ever posted) is using
it regularly instead of cygwin. Perhaps he'll speak up?

Check file permissions. I had one person tell me he needed to change
all the permissions in the maps directory to world readable to get it to
work. The following command would do the trick:

  sudo chmod -R a+rX /usr/local/share/xastir/maps

(the capital X in "a+rX" is important and means something different from the
lower case)

I don't know exactly why the new maps would get put there with the wrong
permissions, but apparently it does happen.

[Xastir] Zoomable Google maps for Xastir ?

2006-12-24 Thread Henk Oegema
I have been using Xastir for a while with static maps (mainly for
Netherlands & Belgium)

After reading the Wiki how to install a full version of Xastir for
Kubuntu 6.10, I decided to install that one, hoping to enjoy the
bleeding edge version of Xastir.

I have absolutely no experience with zoom able maps, but I am trying to
learn about it.

My question : Is it possible to use zoom able Google maps online,
instead of static maps.
Like the one in use at the DB0ANF APRS Server

(Or other zoom able maps for Europe)

(Sorry for my ignorance)
