Re: [Xastir] Feature Request re: Shapefile maps

2008-03-17 Thread Richard Polivka, N6NKO

All,

A script could be written and run under root/sudo privileges that does
the WGET, then puts in zero length files as placeholders if there are no
files present in the download package. Xastir would have to accept zero
length as a legit file.

Now, there would have to be some way of forcing a map regen to update
these files. I know that when I get down to county level, the rendering
does take a bit.

This would be a good help at displaying SBW's since they are not coming
over WXSVR, at least here.

Now back to my Irish Coffee.

Richard, N6NKO

Sorry for the delay but between honey-do's, allergies, and wanting to

Ken Waters does these for storm-based warnings. I currently have a
WFS that handles this but I don't generate shapes. I can also
provide WMS for these.

They work, with one caveat: They don't show up in the Map Chooser
(even on a map re-scan) if they have 0 shapes in the shape file.

Is there any way, or a pointer to the code to fix it myself and
submit a diff back, where this is handled. To get around it, I
copied a shape file with polygons over it to the same file, did a
rescan so they show up, then put them back after I selected them.

Essentially, in this case, the map chooser should consider a 0
shape shapefile valid. This is a fun one to reproduce because the
source files at NWS are changed on a 1 minute basis.

Which leads to second question, does Xastir automatically re-render
these when they change or is there something I need to do to make
it so.

Thanks

[Xastir] Re: Ubuntu 7.10 and XASTIR

2008-03-17 Thread Tony Hunt
Robert I am real suprised there has been no response to your query on this.
A search of the thread under the mail list seems to sugest you have no
replies.

I wonder if the very small window you get opening looks like a vertical
Cigar ? I wonder if you are using Gnome with the restricted drivers and say
a Nvidia Video card ? If this is all affirmative so far then have a look at
the thread earlier this month and the month before about "Cigar problem" ..

We have found that the Cigar issue seems to centre around Gnome and
Restricted Drivers with the "Desktop Effects" enabled . Well thats how it
was for me.

Have a search for the "Desktop Effects" in the system menu from memory. Mine
was set to Normal and this caused the Cigars to appear. Setting it to OFF
fixed it along with using XFce and KDE desktops.

That was my first try. My maps (national atlas and TIGER shapfiles)
have lots of filled polygons near me (lake, wildlife refuge, etc), and
the filled polygons cover the radar.

Since Tom split the polygons from the lines on the latest TIGER
shapefiles, I can probably do some map layer rearranging and partially
solve the problem for close-in work, but my nat'l atlas stuff needs
more work.

Thanks for all the info/suggestions.

Feedback I've gotten from NWS on their preferences for severe wx,
spotters and radar is to have radar atop everything except spotters.

That said, everyone is able to change layers as they see fit...

can't be done. I don't believe the image code in
Xastir would even honor any alpha channel data in a

Just another tick mark for Xastir 2, right? :)

[Xastir] Maps missing

2008-03-17 Thread Keith Kaiser
I just loaded Xastir on my new MacBook Pro, nice, real nice... I love
the speed.

Anyway, when I'm at home I usually just use Online maps, but despite
the fact that they are all in the appropriate folder they are not
showing up in the Map Chooser Properties list. The folder (Online for
example) is listed in the Chooser but when I click on Properties,
there is nothing listed. Any ideas?

The following maps are in the Online folder;
CanadaTopo50k.geo, CanadaTopo250k.geo, terraserver-reflectivity.geo,
terraserver-topo.geo, terraserver-urban.geo terraserver.geo
tigermap.geo, TXRadar.geo, USRadar.geo, WMSRadar.geo

I loaded Xastir 1.9.2 below is the configure string I entered;

./configure --prefix=/sw --with-rtree --with-bdb-incdir=/sw/include/
db4 --with-bdb-libdir=/sw/lib --with-imageMagick=/sw/lib/
ImageMagick-6.3.7

Why not just set the radar layer as the bottom layer and draw everything on
top of that? I think you have to turn on automaps for it to work correctly,
though.
