Re: [Xastir] version interactions?
Hi all, I think I have narrowed the problems down to the Debian machine and not the Mac OS X. I haven't change the OS X machine in months but the Debian machine is currently under constant change. I've switched back to the Debian standard Xastir version 1.8.2 and this still has the problem. I did a "make uninstall" on the 1.9.2 version of Xastir, which was installed in /usr/local while the 1.8.2 was installed in /usr. I noticed that the 1.8.2 version works fine until I turn on the server ports, then it goes into molasses mode and takes 30 seconds to display a pull-down menu. I don't get any good data through a telnet connection to the server ports regardless whether they are local or remote to the Debian server. When I compiled and installed the 1.9.2 version I did not install any new libraries, I used the ones that Debian installed for the 1.8.2 version. But now the 1.8.2 version is screwed up. I hate dynamically linked libraries. If you are the only one using a library, they work fine. But with a lot of applications sharing them some other application can fiddle with a library and blow up Xastir and it'll be hell to find it. At this point I think the easiest thing to do is to re-install the whole box and start over. I had a boss who once said: "once you know how computers really work, you really wonder how they work at all." Having a degree in computer science helps, mainly to know how futile this effort can be. Does the terminal where you start xastir offer any clues? You can bypass xastir on the client by simply using telnet to connect to the xastir server port - the data is printable. First, on the xastir server, do "telnet localhost 2023" and see if any data comes through (this will require that you're receiving data, naturally). This test will tell you that the xastir server is really serving data. Next, go to the client machine and "telnet serverip 2023" and see if you get any data there. Re: [Xastir] D700 Connection
I sure liked the sound of this idea, so I renamed, and rebuilt all my preferences, re-added the interface items, and took the laptop out to the garage but nope it still didn't see the .d700 file to activate it. I do have a number of internet types set up, first.aprs.net, second.aprs.net, and one or two others, I never really know if I need more than one or not. I'm headed to Europe end of May and want something for over there too. But first I got to get this interface to my D700 working. I still need to do the dumb terminal thing. Minicom is what I usually use. The problems only started when I installed the new version of Xastir, I've even had it working with the MacBook Pro I'm using before so cabling isn't the issue. I used to install Xastir in /sw/share/ this is the first time I let it default to /usr/local/ so my head tells me its a permissions problem. But I really don't know where to start finding the problem, I'll try the dumb terminal route and see what I learn. If you're running the same config directory and files for Xastir as you were when you ran Xastir from /sw/share/, then I'd try this: Kill all running Xastir sessions cd mv .xastir .xastir.old Start up Xastir Xastir will create a new config directory and config file, so you'll be starting from scratch just like you're running it for the first time. Use the old config files as hints as you're filling in the boxes again. Some of your paths to various things can be messed up in your config file, pointing to the old install location for Xastir. -- Curt, WE7U. archer at eskimo dot com http://www.eskimo.com/~archer Lotto: A tax on people who are bad at math. - unknown Windows: Microsoft's tax on computer illiterates. - WE7U. That said, I could read the RTF as plain text somewhat as long as I ignore the extra crap all over it. I see nothing wrong with your Xastir compile, nor should I. The problem you're having is most likely cabling or serial port setup. You may need a null-modem adapter, or you may be plugging into the wrong port on the radio (I've heard of other people having that problem). Xastir opens a small window which it uses to then try to gauge the height/width of the window decorations. It sounds like your window manager is misbehaving with these windows for some reason. They should appear for a fraction of a second (depending on the speed of your hardware) and then disappear. What window manager are you using? Can you switch to another one easily to see if that solves this particular problem? I have a large choice of window managers on my system. -- Curt, WE7U. archer at eskimo dot com http://www.eskimo.com/~archer Lotto: A tax on people who are bad at math. - unknown Windows: Microsoft's tax on computer illiterates. - WE7U. That last is a long-shot, but I noticed that OpenSUSE changed to something like UTF-8, where Xastir wants to see "C" or "US_en", else your config files won't work properly. I don't know for sure if that will affect the displayed fonts as well. -- Curt, WE7U. archer at eskimo dot com http://www.eskimo.com/~archer Lotto: A tax on people who are bad at math. - unknown Windows: Microsoft's tax on computer illiterates. - WE7U. I haven't had time to do searches on this, but it sounds familiar. I may have run across it myself or seen it come across the mailing list. Have you done searches through the mailing list to find people with similar problems, and hopefully the solution? I may have suggested such earlier in this thread. There may have been updates to your operating system on either box that might have made your networking flaky. As I recall the server port code hasn't been touched in any significant way in quite some time, so the 1.8.x versions should be nearly identical to the latest version in that respect. > All this was working fine when I had the iMac > running the stock Debian Xastir package of > version 1.8.2. Is it possible that dhcp is still running even though have a static address on the box now, and trying to change your address periodically? Any other process running on the box that might be messing with your networking? Particularly something that might have the capability of stopping/restarting your networking? Re: [Xastir] version interactions?
> Anyone got any *wild* ideas for my tired old brain? Did the server machine's firewall happen to get turned on somewhere along the way? Does the terminal where you start xastir offer any clues? You can bypass xastir on the client by simply using telnet to connect to the xastir server port - the data is printable. First, on the xastir server, do "telnet localhost 2023" and see if any data comes through (this will require that you're receiving data, naturally). This test will tell you that the xastir server is really serving data. Next, go to the client machine and "telnet serverip 2023" and see if you get any data there. [Xastir] version interactions?
Hi all, I'm having a strange problem with interactions between Xastir versions (maybe). I have an old iMac PowerPC running the most recent stable Debian and Xastir 1.9.2 connected to a serial TNC. This works great, no problems. It has it's "server ports" turned on ready to share it's data. I have an Intel MacBook running Mac OS X v5 with Xastir 1.9.2. The MacBook has an "Internet Server" interface connected to the iMac server port (2023) so I can see what the iMac hears over the radio and it's nice antenna. The problem is that the MacBook has stopped getting any data from the iMac over the server ports. The iMac works fine, gets all the data from the radio and displays it nicely. The MacBook get no data and it's connection to the iMac keeps dropping. It's set to automagically re-connect, and it does, after it's missed all the data. I think it gets knocked off the server port every time data is sent, but I don't know why because there are no error messages. It may be dropping a lot more often than coinciding with data transfers. All this was working fine when I had the iMac running the stock Debian Xastir package of version 1.8.2. But that didn't have many options compiled in, so I upgraded to version 1.9.2. It also worked fine with the iMac running the new Xastir 1.9.2 until I changed the IP address of the iMac from a DHCP address to a static one. I've re-booted the iMac, re-configured and restarted Xastir on the MacBook all to no avail. Anyone got any *wild* ideas for my tired old brain?
