Hmm. You tried to compile in everything you could, didn't you? Are
you using the profiling? That's typically just something the
developers would want to do, but if a user tells us that XX routine
is using too much of the CPU, we'll definitely appreciate the
report!

You're good to go for the Shapefile maps. You've got PCRE, dbfawk,
and rtree in there, which means you have all of the whiz-bang
Shapelib features compiled in.

So... Go to the Map Pointers page off our homepage. Hmmm. Guess
what, I don't know where it is anymore. We have a new look now and
I have to get used to it!

Ok, try this instead, go to

Then click on "2003 & 2004 U.S. Tiger/Line streetmap data in
Shapefile Format" in the Vector Map section. Again hmmm... I'm not
having much luck today getting in. Anyway, go to the most recent
year and download an entire state or just the counties you're
interested in, put them somewhere in your map directory
(/usr/local/share/xastir/maps), creating subdirectories at will to
organize them however you like, then in Xastir reindex maps
(map->configure). Map Chooser should now show you the new maps.

All/most of this should be in the README.MAPS file and other
documentation, including the documentation in Xastir's HELP menu.

Bummer. That makes it harder for us to fix ... :)

dbfawk file have nothing to do with internet-based maps by the way,
only local Shapefile maps, so you're barking up the wrong tree there.

That explains why I've never been able to figure it out. I need to do
more experimenting/learning with the maps.

If you want to see the island the way it is supposed to be seen,
and all the time, then you'll either need to switch to a different
internet map server, or use local maps. I choose to use Shapefile
conversions of the raw Tiger/Line data from the tamu.edu site. Our
Shapefile code in Xastir does a pretty good job for the most part.

This I'll need to learn. I do have a few local maps, but they are
very old and very horrible (at least compared to tigermaps).

You'll need Shapelib compiled into Xastir for this to work. It's
nice to have dbfawk support as well so that they draw nicely, but
it's not required. You need Shapelib anyway (plus the NWS maps)
for weather alerts to work.

Here's what the about box says I have: ImageMagick, libProj, GeoTiff,
GDAL/OGR, ShapeLib, PCRE, Dbfawk, map_caching, profiling, rtree,
LessTif. So I've got all the program parts (I think). I need the data
parts and configuration know-how. I haven't read the help files cover-
to-cover yet, so I guess I gotta go back there unless you've got a
quick suggestion on where to start.

Of course I'm working nights the next five nights, so it's unlikely
I'll look at it before next week ... :)

Sure, what you're showing is a Tigermap bug, not an Xastir bug.
When we go out to get an internet-based map, we're asking the server
on the other end to render the map into some raster image, then we
transfer that image to our disk and use ImageMagick (except in rare
cases) to render it into our pixmap, at which point Xastir takes
over and draws other stuff on top of it. In other words, we have
very little say in how the remote server does that drawing. We just
show what we get.

dbfawk file have nothing to do with internet-based maps by the way,

Shucks. Tigermaps, specifically, are heavily related to the problem.
I did look at the dbfawks files but didn't see anything which
remotely looked related (but then I don't know a lot about them yet).

Turn on the map grid (Map menu), then select one of the UTM or MGRS
coordinate systems (File->Configure menu). Pan right or left of
that UTM major grid line and see how it works.

OK. I do see an artifact when I do that. But that isn't nearly as
bothersome as the disappearing island ... :)

You didn't mention having any maps turned on, or which maps, so I
wasn't sure which bug you were exercising.

Turn on the map grid (Map menu), then select one of the UTM or MGRS

that UTM major grid line and see how it works.

What maps are you using?

Exactly what problem are you referring to? I can think of a couple

You're at a UTM zone boundary, so terraserver will only give you
one side or the other as far as maps.
