Re: [Xastir] Xastir and TM-D710A
James, Thanks for the input. Setting my radio to use Packet12 and plugging into the port on the back of the head unit, I now see the traffic in Xastir! I guess this was a PEBKAC related issue. So, how can I get it to use the PC Port on the back of the TX/RX unit instead of having to use the Comm port on the back of the head unit? Thanks again! When you say you are using the internal TNC, do you mean using the radio in APRS mode, and looking at the display screen? Are you referring here to menu 601 INTERNAL TNC | DATA SPEED? This is the on-air baud rate. The problem is when I try to tell the radio to use a different port speed on the com port. 9600 baud is the lowest I can go! My options are 9600, 19200, 38400, and 57600. Now you're talking about the settings in menu 528 AUX | COM PORT BAUDRATE, or menu 519 AUX | PC PORT BAUDRATE. The COM port is on the back of the control head while the PC port is on the back of the TX/RX unit. There is also another setting that you should not be playing with, and that is the DATA Terminal Speed in menu 518 AUX | EXT. DATA SPEED. That is only for use when using an external TNC connected to the DATA terminal on the back of the TX/RX unit. Let's get your oranges out of your apple cart. The TM-D710A is a dual speed TNC. It can operate at both 1200 baud and 9600 baud on RF. This is the on air signalling rate. This has nothing to do with the speed of that the radio is communicating with the device attached to the COM port on the radio control head or via the PC port on the back of the TX/RX unit. Try plugging into the back of the control head, and watching the incoming data as you press the TNC button on the D710 to get it into Packet mode. You should see PACKET12 above the side of the radio that says 144.390. That means you are on 144.390 running at 1200 baud in packet mode. See if you can get access to the TNC that way. Re: [Xastir] Xastir and TM-D710A
Russell, It makes sense that if you're trying to receive and transmit 9600 baud APRS that the serial port can't be set to a lower speed than that. The serial link to the computer would then become an unwanted bottleneck. But if you have the TNC to set to 1200 baud data but the radio only offers 9600 baud as the slowest comm port speed then they've eliminated some options that the D700 has. Oh well. So lets drop Xastir completely and eliminate that as a problem. At this point I'd recommend getting the Kenwood MCP program for the D710 and see if you can talk to the radio using your computer, the comm port, and your cable. If that doesn't work then I'd recommend building a new cable from scratch and/or getting the "official" cable if they make such an animal. Re: [Xastir] Xastir and TM-D710A
Thanks David, I think it's that I had it configged for 9600 baud, not 1200. When I use the internal TNC on the radio for 9600 Baud, I have no updates where as 1200 shows all the traffic. The problem is when I try to tell the radio to use a different port speed on the com port. 9600 baud is the lowest I can go! My options are 9600, 19200, 38400, and 57600. Am I just SOoL? I'm about to call Kenwood to see if I can put it in a lower speed on the Comm port. Thanks David Flood wrote: Try kicking down your serial speed on both the radio and the computer. All, I'm closer to getting this to work. I've made a new cable matching the pinouts, and this time when I view the option of "view incoming data" all I see is a repeat about 20+ times of a string: O->TNC: ? I've googled for this and dont come up with anything. Anyone have idea's? Thanks again, r David Flood wrote: My first suggestion would be to make sure you are plugged into the PC/Comm jack. From looking at the online manual (and that's all I can afford right now) both jacks have the same number of outside pins so it would be easy to plug the same plug into both. The PC/Comm jack adds a center pin for ground that isn't there on the Data jack. David, You're right, I am plugged into the Data jack. The cable that I picked up that stated it would plug into the PC/Comm jack wouldnt fit (center prong and other odd shapes). I think it looks much like a S-Video cable connector, so tonight I'll hack one apart and make my own cable for this. A little bit of PEBKAC :) Thanks, r David Flood wrote: My first suggestion would be to make sure you are plugged into the PC/Comm jack. [Xastir] Xastir and TM-D710A
Greetings all, I'm trying to get my Kenwood TM-D710A and Xastir to work together. I followed the instructions for just a serial connection only (/dev/ttyS0) and start the port. My radio immediately begins to transmit *dead air* and doesnt stop until I remove the serial cable. I then have to power cycle the radio so that when I plug in the serial cable it doesn't keep x-mitting. I followed some other threads and tried minicom. Minicom, listening on /dev/ttyS0, show's no traffic. But when I tried "echo -e “\300\377\300” /dev/ttyS0", my radio began to immediately x-mit dead air again. Any ideas? Thanks. r ___ Xastir mailing list Xastir@xastir.org http://lists.xastir.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/xastir
