[Xen-devel] Beginner Information: Final 2015 Xen Project Document Day is Wednesday Dec 2

2015-11-30 Thread Russ Pavlicek
OUR THEME OF THE MONTH: Beginner Information

We've seen an increase of interest from potential new users recently
and we need to make sure that people can successfully get started with
4.6 using our current set of Wiki pages. We have been slowly
replacing the "xm" references with "xl", but we could use people to
read over many of the existing pages to make sure they still make
sense with the latest release.

Pages of special interest include:

* Xen Project Beginners Guide (recently revised, but could use a read-through)
* Getting Started
* Xen Project Best Practices
* Xen Common Problems

And, of course, any other page which needs to reflect the realities of
working with 4.6.

More detailed information can be found in the TODO document (below).
And, as always, feel free to add any other documentation which you
believe to be necessary.

All the information you need to participate in Document Day is here:

http://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/Xen_Document_Days

Also take a look at the current TODO list to see other items which
need attention:

http://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/Xen_Document_Days/TODO

Please think about how you can help out. If you haven't requested
to be made a Wiki editor, save time and do it now so you are ready to
go on Document Day. Just fill out the form below:

OUR THEME OF THE MONTH: "Ready for 4.6"

This month, we continue with the effort to make the Wiki reflect the
realities of the 4.6 release. Many pages need reviewing and may need
updating. Main tasks include:

- Add new documentation for new features
- Modify existing documentation for anything which is changing in the
newest release, and
- Deprecate old documentation, letting people know that certain
information is applies only to older releases

Check out the current documentation, and anything which doesn't map to
4.6 (or 4.5, for that matter) commands or best practices will need
improvement.

2015-09-24 Thread Russ Pavlicek
Our next Xen Project Document Day is this Wednesday, September 30!

OUR THEME OF THE MONTH: "Ready for 4.6"

This month, we prepare for the release of Xen Project 4.6 early next
month. We need to make sure that users of the new release can find the
documentation they need to make it all work. So, this month, we need
to:

- Add new documentation for new features
- Modify existing documentation for anything which is changing in the
newest release, and
- Deprecate old documentation, letting people know that certain
information is applies only to older releases

Check out the current documentation, and anything which doesn't map to
4.6 (or 4.5, for that matter) commands or best practices will need
improvement.

Our THEME OF THE MONTH: User Requests

This month, we will focus on requests which have appeared in our IRC
channel and UserVoice for additional documentation. Recent requests
 include the following:

 - Development Documentation: An overview of the driver architecture.
This may already exist, but it needs to be more prominently visible.
If it's out there, it is not as easy to find as it should be.
 - User Documentation: Simple example of moving a VM from one machine
to another offline and possibly changing toolsets as it goes.
 - User Documentation: Update to the Xen_Windows_GplPv doc. The drivers
are still used, but the information on the page is dated. It needs a
 refresh.
 - User Documentation: Build a NEW HOW-TO describing how to create a
Xen 4.5.1 AMD64 environment. This should include sub-HOWTOs for
 networking and DomU creation.

More detailed information can be found in the TODO document (below).

[Xen-devel] Unikernel Users Summit at Texas Linux Fest on Aug 21, presented by Xen Project

2015-08-07 Thread Russ Pavlicek
Docker and containers have gotten a lot of attention lately for their
small size and easy deployment. But Unikernels offer even smaller
sizes and huge advances in security! In the next generation of cloud,
these are critical assets, so it is no wonder that Unikernels are
beginning to draw serious interest.

In this event held at Texas Linux Fest, we will first discuss why
Unikernels are important for the future of our industry, and then
developers and users of various Unikernel systems will talk about the
details of using various Unikernels. This event is focused on users
with little or no experience with Unikernels, so all are welcome to
attend!

Presentations will include HowTos for using OSv, Rump Kernels,
MirageOS, and more. Xen Project is organizing the event because we
seek to develop innovative technologies for virtualization and cloud.
Many of these Unikernel systems have leveraged the Xen Project
Hypervisor because we enable these small, secure workloads which will
be needed in the next generation cloud, Internet of Things (IoT), and
other new forms of computing.

Join us at Texas Linux Fest during their Tutorial Day as we talk about
using Unikernels!

For many of us in the northern hemisphere, this is the time of year
when people sort through the things they own and put the things they
no longer need into a yard sale. Well, instead of removing things we
don't need, we want a reverse yard sale, where we add the things we

 use Xen Project with Hyper
 - XAPI: The latest docs from the XenServer crew need to be referenced
 from our wiki
 - Unikernels: Lots of Unikernels leverage Xen Project; we need them

[Xen-devel] Document Day is Tomorrow, May 27

2015-05-26 Thread Russ Pavlicek
Reminder: Our project's Document Day for May is tomorrow!

Theme for this month: No-Can-Do Without a HowTo, Part 2. Last
month, we ended up creating a great new page describing Huge Page
support. Can we top that this month?

We've got a lot of good information in the documentation, but it isn't
always in a form that will help someone use a particular feature for
the first time. Or, sometimes the information is present, but it might
need to be brought up-to-date.

Some of these possible topics include:

- OpenStack updates (lots of new work means we should review and
update the OpenStack pages as needed)
- Get up and running with Mirage OS
- Booting with UEFI (see the TODO page for a link to a QA post about this)
- Installing on ARM (need a basic HowTo; more and more people are
trying to test Xen Project on ARM)
- Using Xen Project with common applications (see the TODO page for a
link to a QA post about Citrix Netscaler)
- Any other niche topic which doesn't have a good HowTo-type doc page

If you know anything about these or any other topic which needs to a
good HowTo document, please join in tomorrow!

[Xen-devel] Outreachy (OPW) Mentors: Please update your project ideas

2015-03-06 Thread Russ Pavlicek
Xen Project has two slots in the upcoming Round 10 of Outreachy (the
new name for OPW).

All prospective mentors need to update their project ideas soon on the page:
http://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/Outreach_Program_Projects

Applicants have to create initial patches and file their applications
by March 24, so please try to update your project ideas during the
next week, if at all possible.

You can read about the latest round of Outreachy here:
http://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/Outreachy/Round10

Until Lars returns from vacation on March 11, please direct any
questions or issues to me and I will do my best to move things
forward.

Thanks,

Russ

 From: no-re...@google-melange.appspotmail.com
 To: lars.ku...@xenproject.org

Thank you for submitting Xen Project's application to Google Summer of Code
2015. Unfortunately, we were unable to accept your organization's
application at this time. Every year we receive many more applications than
we are able to accommodate, and we would encourage you to reapply for future
 instances of the program.

If you would like some general feedback on why your organization was not
accepted, please consider attending the IRC meeting in #gsoc on Freenode on
Friday, 6 March, 2015 at 16:00 UTC. Please note that the feedback meeting
will be limited to the first 50 organizations to queue up (queuing in the
channel will begin at 15:30 UTC). You are also more than welcome to just
email the OSPO team at ospot...@gmail.com directly for email feedback about
 your application as well.

 Best regards,

[Xen-devel] Welcome to Xen Project Document Day for February: The Great 4.5 Clean-Up (Part II)

2015-02-24 Thread Russ Pavlicek
Today, Wednesday, is Xen Project Document Day for February!

The documentation around the recent 4.5 release is improving, but
there is still need for more clean-up. We still have a number of
pages which talk in terms of xend rather than libxenlight. For
example, check the TODO list (see below) for a list of pages which we
know still feature the xm command instead of xl.

Have you seen a page which needs updating? If you can't update it,
please add it to the list under THE GREAT 4.5 CLEAN-UP on the TODO
list. If we can identify and update these pages, we'll help new users
tremendously. There are few things as bad as trying a command which
does not exist and is not available. Let's not frustrate our newbies.

All the information you need to participate in Document Day is here:

http://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/Xen_Document_Days

Also take a look at the current TODO list to see other items which
need attention:

http://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/Xen_Document_Days/TODO

Please think about how you can help out. If you haven't requested
to be made a Wiki editor, just fill out the form below:

http://xenproject.org/component/content/article/100-misc/145-request-to-be-made-a-wiki-editor.html

We hope to see you today in #xendocs!

[Xen-devel] Proposal: Xen Project Document Days for 2015

2015-01-13 Thread Russ Pavlicek
Folks,

I am proposing that this year's Document Days schedule follow the rule
we followed in the latter half of 2014: Doc Days will be scheduled on
the final Wednesday of each month (barring conflicts with holidays).

Particularly, I suggest the following dates:

January 28, 2015
February 25, 2015
March 25, 2015
April 29, 2015
May 27, 2015
June 24, 2015
July 29, 2015
August 26, 2015
September 30, 2015
October 28, 2015
December 2, 2015 (due to holidays in November and December in multiple
countries)

If anyone would like to suggest a change to the rule, please reply.

Otherwise, if you see a local holiday in the list above, speak up so
we can consider rescheduling.

Thanks,

Russ

Re: [Xen-devel] Xen 4.5 Development Update (RC4) - Documentation Updates

2014-12-19 Thread Russ Pavlicek
Lars,

@Russell: you may want to update the XM to XL pages or create a new
one and add your video

I've updated the existing Wiki pages. I've also created an unpublished
entry in the Video section of the XenProject.org website. Should we
publish that now, or wait until release?

Iirc scalability changes on the x86 side were mostly (if not exclusively)
in terms of performance improvements (in some cases getting bigger
guests out of not booting at all state).

Hmm, wasn't there improvements to allow more VMs per host aswell.. ? which
 would be worth mentioning..
 xenstored related stuff iirc.

[Xen-devel] Monday is the Last Xen Project Document Day of 2014

2014-12-11 Thread Russ Pavlicek
Monday, December 15, will be our last Document Day of the year.

Given the 4.5 RC4 Testing scheduled for Wednesday of next week and the holidays
which occur later in the month, we have scheduled Document Day for Monday.

This is a great time to get our documentation ready for the new
release. Have you
added a new feature in this release? Make sure it is in the Wiki.
Have you noticed
pages which might be confusing for a new installation? Now is a great
time to clean
it up. Have you information on better integrating Xen Project with
other projects?
Share that information with others.

current TODO list to see other items which need attention:
